I'm more of a layer than a backer but backed a very short one today (Duke of Marmalade) which I very rarely do. I just couldn't see anything in the race which could beat it. What I was supposed to have put was that when favourites have a long losing run at a course (as shown, and depending on what your own idea of a 'long run' is) ) the idea is to back the next favourite in a non-handicap race at that course. My idea of leaving handicaps alone is that although they produce better priced winners, they are fewer in number as a percentage of winners. My own criteria are :- 1. No backing joint favourites, as I invariably pick the the wrong one. 2. Nothing over 3/1. This is based on averages, not on form, the shorter the price, the more winners it produces. Here are Mays results :- R.S.F.W. is Races Since Favourite Won. I'll go back to the start of May, when time permits, and compare this table with how many non-handicap favourites were beaten, as opposed to all favourites, as a starting point.
