Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th I know it's early, but I have elected to take Perth -0 @ $3 Centrebet. Melbourne have Thompson and Leija suspended and talk is that Merrick wants to give a rest to Allsop and Muscat. Perth are reasonable at home having only lost twice and although Melbourne has a flawless away win record, I still feel that they are going to drop points soon as they seek to prepare for the finals.

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th Adelaide United v Queensland Roar Date: Thursday January 4 Kick-off (local time): 7.30pm Venue: Hindmarsh Stadium Radio coverage: LIFE FM (Adelaide) 107.9FM Head-to-head Five league meetings: Adelaide - 3 wins, 2 draws Previous meeting Queensland 0 Adelaide 1 (Suncorp Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 12, November 2006) Last five results Adelaide: Loss - Loss - Draw - Win - Draw Queensland: Loss - Win - Loss - Win - Loss Analysis John Kosmina's Adelaide United still has its focus firmly planted on snatching second spot away from Sydney FC despite a patchy run of form not yet guaranteeing even a position in the final four. The Reds are looking to give themselves a helping hand into the top two with successive home matches in the next fortnight starting against a side which has not yet tasted league victory over them, Queensland Roar. Now would be perfect time to break that duck with Roar boss Frank Farina joking his side is due a win because of the run of results since his arrival which has seen victories and defeats alternate with painful regularly. Searching for consistency given the lack of time available has proved to be Farina's greatest challenge but his side is refusing to throw in the towel on a finals position and with all three points can leapfrog the Mariners and the Jets into fourth ahead of their clash on Friday. The former Socceroos boss hasn't been tempted to place a positive spin on the last weekend's proceedings in New Zealand by conceding the display was simply a bad one. However, Roar supporters are still shaking their heads at such a dispiriting performance against the bottom side and only the optimists among them can see a route to the semi-finals with Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney still to play. Farina makes one key change to his squad which leaves for Adelaide on Wednesday with defender Sasa Ognenovski recalled in place of Remo Buess after the Queensland coach had elected to stick with the squad which beat the Central Coast against the Knights. Midfielders Massimo Murdocca and Marcus Wedau are back in full training but not considered while striker Yuning Zhang continues to be troubled by a knee injury and is not expected to feature again this season. Griffin McMaster keeps his place as reserve goalkeeper with Tom Willis set to undergo an MRI scan next week on his dislocated shoulder. Kosmina also has choices to make in goal but all indications suggest Daniel Beltrame will keep his place after a clean sheet against the Glory despite the return of Robbie Bajic. Impressive midfielder Greg Owens, however, has not recovered from a groin strain but defender Robert Cornthwaite is recalled. Queensland coach Frank Farina: "It’s a very short week for us. We trained on New Year’s Day, we train again today (Tuesday) and we fly out tomorrow; so really we only have time to focus on the game that’s in front of us. This is no time for looking back at games we feel we should have won; we must move forward. There are three games to go and nine points to play for. The players know we missed an opportunity but we can’t dwell on it and they are all focussed on the next game."

The home side have scored 24 of their 28 goals at home and love playing at Hindmarsh in front of their home fans. The $1-70 does certainly look enticing, especially when you consider the insipid of efforts of the Roar in recent times.

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th For this game I am highly considering Over 2.5 game. The Qld Roar simply have to win here, and must go all out to score, which should make for an open game. Obviously the absence of attack minded players Owens and Lynch quells this feeling a little, but the Roar haven't got a great defence and will most likely concede goals. Having so much to play for though, I feel that perhaps it'd be best to have both teams on my side for Overs, rather than requiring Adelaide to win. Recent Adelaide home form:

Hard one to call this game as both sides are capable of playing good football. The Jets were flat last week and played poorly while the Mariners were handy against Melbourne. It is worth noting that the Jets are unbeaten at home against Central Coast.

Even Iceman will tell you that the Knights couldn’t beat an egg away from home. They have conceded 26 goals when venturing outside of New Zealand, and it won’t matter if they are kicking with a monsoon wind behind them in any half, because Sydney will win this game or Ads25 again said he will bear his bum in Myer’s front window. In two games at home against the Knights the home side has won both easily and kicked six goals while conceding none.

Perth have a pretty good record against Melbourne on the whole, even though they have lost the last two against the Victory. There has only ever been one goal separating these two teams at the end of a game and Perth at the -1 must be great value considering Melbourne are resting players.

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th You might be on to something there with the Overs for the Adelaide game Oscar as the home side averages 2.67 goals a game at home, and Queensland average 1.25 goals away. So a fair chance of the Overs going your way. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Queensland to score, as they have been poor in front of goal for the past few weeks bar a couple of games. Adelaide excel at home and look good things, specially when you take into consideration there record against the Roar.

ReasoningPerth @ $4???? This is huge. The Victory have already secured the minor premiership, and are now focusing on finals. They have been undergoing a strenuous fitness regime, designed to peak at the finals. They are resting a number of their players, and two of them last week took a voluntary yellow card to be officially "suspended" from this week's round so as to be on a clean slate come finals. Players that are definitaly missing: Archie Thompson, Adrian Leijer Players that are being tipped to be rested: Kevin Muscatt, Danny Alsopp. Alsopp, Thompson, Muscat are the leagues top three highest scorers. Great value here in Perth. http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,21006239-5000940,00.html

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th Victory goes for new faces MELBOURNE Victory is set to name just three regular starters in its team for Sunday's away game against Perth Glory. Such is Victory's situation with suspensions, injuries and a desire to rest players ahead of the A-League finals, two new players could be signed and make their debuts on the bench on Sunday.Down to a squad of 18, but without suspended pair Adrian Leijer and Archie Thompson and injured defender Daniel Piorkowski, Victory is set to fill its 20-man roster by signing two players from its extended training group. It is believed experienced central defender Antun Kovacic and young players Daniel Visevic and Leigh Broxham have impressed coaching staff and could be in line for short-term call-ups.Victory needs bodies for the bench given coach Ernie Merrick's commitment to resting captain Kevin Muscat, midfield dynamo Fred and A-League leading scorer Daniel Allsopp (11 goals) as he fields a totally rejigged line-up against Glory. Such is the fluid nature of the expected starting line-up that Grant Brebner, Steven Pantelidis and Rodrigo Vargas have 44 A-League starts between them this season while the other eight players have combined for just 26 starts. Three players, striker James Robinson and midfielders Vince Lia and Michael Ferrante will have their first starts of the season. But Merrick is confident of getting a result in Perth regardless of who he puts on the park. "We're looking at giving the boys a run that haven't had much of a start this year, but I think it will still be a very strong team," Merrick said yesterday. "There's a lot of good players in this squad. "The boys that haven't been getting a game are good players as well. "Some of them were regulars last year. As you can see from the quality of the training games, I think we're ready to have a go." Glory has struggled this season and, in seventh spot on the ladder, is poised to miss the finals at the end of a campaign that might best be remembered for last week's post-game punch-up between teammates Jamie Harnwell and Adrian Webster. It was a bizarre situation for the Glory, which has fallen from grace after a position of dominance in the old National Soccer League. Merrick is expecting a difficult encounter as Perth tries to regain some respect.

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th Perth and Melbourne have always had close tussles and never more than a goal seperating them, and Melbourne's outs may seem to favour the home team. However, the players Melbourne are bringing in are no slouches either, and they will be trying to impress as they try to break into the side for the finals. So I wouldn't be too quick to write melbourne off for this game. With new players and a different team, they will be at least unpredictable. Perth do appear good value though considering Melbourne's outs for the game. Probably should be focusing on the Adelaide and Queensland game tonight, as it is only a few hours away.

Adelaide average 17 shots a game at home and score around every 6.5 shots, so if they can keep up the same avaergae then they will score 2 or 3 goals here tonight. The Roar have around 12 shots a game away and score a goal around every 10 shots, so they are a chance of a goal here too. If both team can maintain their average then a score of Adelaide 2-1 or 3-1 is on the cards. All factors here point to Adelaide being much too efficient at home when it comes to having shots and scoring goals.

Queensland are going to have to maintain a good defensive strategy tonight as Adelaide are capable of scoring at any time in the game. The Roar have multiple goals in the first 15 minutes and tend to fade away as the game wears on when playing away.

Big Sasa Ognenovski is back for the Roar in the heart of defence but he will not be match fit, and Remo Buess makes way for him. Robert Cornthwaite is promoted for Adelaide and Owens is still missing from the side.

Queensland

Queensland are great odds for a team with their scoring potential, especially with Damian Mori up front. Although Mori hasn’t scored a goal since he moved from the mariners to Queensland, and neither have many of his team mates.

I believe Adelaide’s great home ground form will be too much for Queensland here and I expect them to win this game quite easily. When you consider the fact Adelaide averages almost three goals a game at home and they are playing a team who struggles to score, and struggles to win away, and they have never lost to Queensland, that makes a good bet to me.

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th After checking out the Adelaide home stats I took the over (-114) and the -0.5 (-132) on the game. That's a lot of juice, but Q just doesn't seem to have the firepower to stay in this one...unless of course Adelaide gets very generous. BOL all

ReasoningGreat odds for starters. Adelaide's form has been great with only Sydney and Melbourne taking away the 3 points in recent history. QLD just got hammered by NZ, and will be looking to bounce back, but with a short week to prepare, as well as New Years, I don't think it will be just yet. Adelaide to win.

Re: A-League Round 18 - Thursday 4th January - Sunday 7th Adelaide vs Queensland First game of the round again on a Thursday night between two teams in a bit of a form slump. Adelaide have only taken 5 points out of a possible 18 in the past 6 rounds while Queensland have only taken 7 out of a possible 30 and have only 2 wins in their past 14 matches after a promising start to the year. Interestinlgy Queensland have never beaten Adelaide in the league before with Adelaide winning 3 of 5 with the other 2 being draws. Adelaide are the second best home team in the league this season with an impressive 6 wins from 9 and 2 draws while Queensland have 3 from 9 matches on the road. Team news is prety good for both teams with no changes expected to be made for Adelaide whil Queensland welcome back tall defender Sasha Organovski after an ankle injury a few weeks back. On the long term injury list for Adelaide are Lucas Pantelitis, Shen Qu & Greg Owens who are all very important players and would be in the first 11 if fit. Missing these players could be a reason behind their recent form slump but the amount of depth in this squad is pretty good and they should be able to cope against a poor Queensland side. Queensland only have 2 players on the long term injury list and they are Massimo Murdocca & Tom Willis. Murdocca is a bit of a loss but Tom Willis is only a reserve keeper. All in all i expect Adelaide to win this and win it comfortably. Queensland have been shocking in recent times and actually lost against the New Zealand Knights for the second time this season last week, they lost 3-1 and the Knights are a team who have only won about 5 games in their entire history. This doesnt sit well with me and Adelaide being the great tteam at home they are and knowing this is a very important match if they want a top 2 finish, they will be pumped up for this one. Not sure really because Queensland weather is hot and humid, so maybe it will be Adelaide who tires. :loon
