Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Early thoughts…

Perth/Adelaide The Glory are usually hard to beat at home and Adelaide have been very ordinary away from home this season. Sets up an interesting game and my first thoughts are either a draw or perhaps Adelaide maybe. The away side cannot afford to let this one slip, not with the logjam for a finals position on the line.

Knights/Roar Well the Knights one this game last time when playing at home and I am sure the Roar will be keen to atone for their efforts that day. Frank Farina has them playing fairly well now and you would expect Queensland to get up here. Apart from the Melbourne 4 goal blitz in their last game, the Knights have been playing well with their new recruits.

Mariners/Melbourne This game was a 3-3 cracker in Melbourne last time and the Mariners served it up to the Victory and will be hoping for more of the same as they are hosting the League leaders. Melbourne have taken all before them this season and they have secured the premiership already. Not sure about this game, will all depend on team hunger. Mariners will be desperate for a win, Melbourne will be wanting a win, but will they be as desperate. Not quite sure which way this will go, but always tough to pick against Melbourne this season.

Jets/Sydney Big game here for the Jets as they are fighting for 4th spot along with the Roar and Mariners, and they will need to be at their best to beat Sydney. Griffiths is likely to miss through injury but they will have Nick Carle back. Sydney have been playing very solid football for a number of weeks now and this could go either way.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Current Top 6 Positions

1. Melbourne Victory FC

41

2. Sydney FC

28

3. Adelaide United FC

26

4. Central Coast Mariners FC

23

5. Newcastle Jets FC

23

6. Queensland Roar FC

22

Queensland Roar would be expected to beat the Knights this weekend and they could land in the Top 4 if Central Coast and Newcastle were to lose to Melbourne and Sydney respectively. If Adelaide slip up at Perth then they put themselves in a bit of trouble if CCM or Jets were to win.

Winning games this week is very important for the teams placed 3rd to 6th, as a loss could be disastrous in the run home to the finals and a Top 4 position at stake.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Adelaide Vs Perth on Thursday night 28th December Adelaide midfielder Greg Owens has been ruled out for the Perth trip and doubtful for the Queensland match on Thursday week with general leg soreness. Owens had scored in his last two games and his pace and forward runs will be missed against the Glory. On the positive side United regains skipper Ross Aloisi who was rested against Newcastle Jets, and striker Bruce Djite will also be in the travelling party. Adelaide Keeper Robert Bajic returns from suspension, but his replacement Daniel Beltrame will make it difficult for Bajic to return in goal after 2 solid games for Adelaide. Perth Glory currently sits in seventh place, and are still mathematically in the hunt for a Top 4 place, and will be tough opposition for United on Thursday. Adelaide's record in Perth is very good but will have to be at it's best to come away with 3 points. Even though Glory are near the foot of the table, they do have enough talent in their squad to cause any team problems. Exciting midfield youngster 20yo David Micevski has a lot of talent, and their experienced players include former Socceroos Stan Lazaridis, Simon Colosimo, Bobby Despotovski and skipper Jamie Harnwell. Adelaide do have a lot to play for with second spot in arms reach, and any slip up could prove costly with finals football only 4 rounds away.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Adelaide eyes another Miami striker Adelaide United is in the process of signing Miami FC player Diego Walsh to replace the club's injured Chinese striker Shengqing Qu. The Reds were initially chasing former Japanese international player Takuya Yamada but believe it will be easier to secure the 27-year-old Brazilian. United coach John Kosmina said the club was optimistic an agreement would be reached to secure his club its second Miami player this season, after the four-week stint from Romario.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Perth Glory v Adelaide United Date: Thursday December 28 Kick-off (local time): 7.00pm Venue: Members Equity Stadium Head-to-head Five league meetings: Adelaide - 4 wins, Perth - 1 win Previous meeting Adelaide 3 Perth 2 (Hindmarsh Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 11, November 2006) Last five results Perth: Win - Win - Loss - Loss - Loss Adelaide: Loss - Loss - Loss - Draw - Win Analysis Three consecutive away trips has resulted in three consecutive defeats for Ron Smith's Perth Glory side with the coach himself conceding any finals aspirations have disappeared for another season. The loss at Aussie Stadium against 10-man Sydney FC a fortnight ago was the Glory's eighth of a fruitless campaign and that Achilles heel will disappoint the home faithful immensely with three successive home matches and a trip to New Zealand scheduled for their run-in. The opening clash of round 18 without doubt now means more to the visitors and former premiers Adelaide United. The Reds ended a brief barren spell against Newcastle in their previous outing before Christmas to remain in the group chasing second position behind front runners Melbourne Victory. Indeed, a win will temporarily take Adelaide above Sydney FC into second place ahead of the champion's New Year's Day encounter with the Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium - that despite already suffering a surprising seven defeats this season. Coach John Kosmina rested skipper Ross Aloisi against Newcastle - the first league match he's missed in over a year - but is expecting an instant recall for the first team although Angelo Costanzo is still nursing a troublesome knee complaint. Goalkeeper Robbie Bajic is also available after serving a two-match suspension. Meanwhile, midfielder Greg Owens and striker Fernando scored their fourth and fifth goals of the campaign in the 3-2 win over the Jets with Adelaide's permanent Brazilian leading his club's scoring charts despite a lengthy absence with a knee injury of his own. Kosmina will be looking to Fernando to shoulder the goalscoring burden with compatriot Romario having signed off his month-long guest stint with his maiden Hyundai A-League strike and fellow forwards Shengqing Qu and Dez Giraldi both out with season-ending ankle injuries. Australian under-20 international Bruce Djite, who recently spent two weeks trialling with the reserves of German giants Werder Bremen, is available as a replacement for the unfortunate Giraldi after failing to make a start in his first season in Adelaide. For Perth, defender Ante Kovacevic has racked up four bookings so Smith might be tempted to push captain Jamie Harnwell back into central defence from his makeshift striking position. The Perth coach will also be sweating on the fitness of wingers Stan Lazaridis and Leo Bertos, as well as defender David Tarka, who were all casualties from the match with Sydney. Perth look good value against Adelaide considering they are at almost full strength and Adelaide play poorly away and they lose Romario and Owens. Knights beat the Roar when they were the home side last time and probably some value in their odds of over $6, while the Roar are $1-47 and I wouldn't touch that in a fit for the away team. Mariners are also good odds at home against Melbourne. the Home team have much to play for and Melbourne are crusing and can afford to take it easy in the run to the finals. Sydney at $2-75 appear good value to me here considering their form, and the fact they have only lost 3 games this season. A +1 bet on Sydney would be around $2-00 or so and like to be on that.. The Jets have been playing well but Griffiths must be doubtful.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Perth vs Adelaide Very important match tonight at Members Equity Stadium which will have a big bearing on both teams season. Perth must win to even have a chance for the playoffs, while an Adelaide win will put them temporarily into 2nd spot ahead of Sydney who will have a game in hand. Both these teams werent in the greatest form prior to the break last week with Perth winning only 2 of their past 10 matches, while Adelaide had won only 1 of their past 5, but that was a confidence boosting 3-2 win over Newcastle last start. OVerall these two sides have met 5 times in the A-League with Adelaide dominating with a record of 4-0-1 and interestingly they have a 100% record against Perth at this ground. Adelaide will need to improve their away form tonight if they are to be any chance because thats been their issue this season, a record of 2-1-5 is pretty ordinary for a team that should be contending for the title and its a main reason why Adelaide have gone from Premier last year to 3rd on the table this year. Perths home form isnt the best in the league, infact they are ranked only #5 on the Home table, but a record of 4-1-2 is not to bad and they must win tonight or thats the end of their season. Adelaide do have some issues with their team with injuries to important players. Greg Owens will miss this game with leg soreness, while Romario returns home after his contract has now expired. Ben Moore's contract also has expired and he will miss. Lucas Pantelis, Dez Giraldi & Shen Qu will miss, with the latter being a huge loss. Some good players missing in that list their, but the good news is captain Ross Aloisi returns to the team, as does no.1 goalkeeper Robbie Bajic after suspension, Robert Cornthwaite also returns and they have got in Bruce Dijite on a short term contract. Perth will miss Ante Kovacevic through suspension for this match, while Jason Petkovic and Bobby Despotovski are out for the season. Despotovski is a massive loss for the club and not having him in the team has really depleted their attacking stocks. David Micevski and Mimi Saric have both been promoted to the team. Adelaide are an interesting team to watch, they can be very attacking at times but they are really known for their defencive abilities. Bobby Petta playing down the wing is amazing once he gets going and he is flying this season assisting in goals with his lightening quick pace. Carl Veart is handy player in the midfield capable of scoring goals from time to time, and Travis Dodd, Ross Aloisi & Fernando make up a quality frontline which is among the best in the league. Its always good watching Jason Spagnuolo in defence as i believe he is a future national team player while Michael Valkanis and Angelo Castanzo are also brilliant defenders. Peth also have some quality but they will find it very hard to match up to Adelaide here in my opinion. Simon Collosimo has been good in defence for Perth, while Stan Lazarides and Leo Bertos have been very solid all season for the Glory. They really need Stewart Young to stand up tonight and score some goals, he has been in some good form recently and he could be the danger man here. But overall i expect Adelaide to win this in what will be a close game early, but expect Adelaide to come home hard towards the end of the second half as they have alot on the line tonight. There is a good price on Adelaide at $2.20 and ill happily take that. Theres also value in the Draw/Adelaide HT/FT bet so look at that with some small stakes. Pick Adelaide to WIN at $2.20 - (5/10) Pick Draw/Adelaide at $5.00 - (2/10) (Longshot)

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Surgery ends Melbourne defender Piorkowski’s season Influential Melbourne Victory defender Daniel Piorkowski has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing hamstring surgery over the weekend. Piorkowski, who sustained the injury in the Round 13 Hyundai A-League clash against Brisbane, had pursued a non-invasive recovery strategy, without success, leaving him no option but to undergo surgery. The 22 year old had been a regular fixture in Ernie Merrick’s side until the Queensland match. The injury blow comes on the back of the departure of ineffective Brazilian import Claudinho, leaving the Melbourne side with a squad of only 18 heading into the finals. However, head coach Ernie Merrick was quick to point out that Piorkowski aside, the entire squad was fit and fighting for a first team place. “We have 18 fully fit players, which I think would be more than any other club in the competition at this stage of the season”. Merrick hinted that he would consider an injury replacement player as cover for Piorkowski for the remainder of the season. “We will be looking at bringing an experienced player from the VPL as a backup. We’re also considering the possibility of signing a young player, and we’ve had 5 trialling with us over the last few weeks, including Daniel Visevic and the captain of the Young Socceroos, Sean Ontong.” Merrick also revealed that his training regime in the leadup to the finals would be prepared to enable his side to peak at the right time of the season. “We’re going to push the boys fairly hard over the next four weeks, knowing that they’re not going to be at their best, but they’ll be at their best for the finals. We’ll play around with the bench in particular to ensure everyone gets a run and freshen up some of the senior players.” Melbourne’s next match is the New Year’s Eve extravaganza on the Central Coast against the Mariners, 6pm kickoff. Victory’s final regular season home match is against the Queensland Roar at Telstra Dome on Friday 12th January (kick-off 8:00pm).

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) I too like Adelaide to win based on the belief that Adelaide have more reason to win this game than Perth. Perth were utterly clueless when they lost ot Sydney had an extra man for most of the game. With the injury to Kovacevic, it causes more problems for the Perth defence. Talent wise, player for player, Adelaide are a better team. Kosmina will have his boys ready to play as they eye second spot. Even though their record is poor away from home, they can make up for it with a victory here. Also over 2.5 and correct score of 3-1 to Adelaide looks good since Perth have scored in every home game. :cheers Adelaide 2.20 Adelaide (-1.5) 4.50 Adelaide 3-1 15.00

Adelaide have only lost to Perth Glory on one occasion and have not lost when playing in Perth. That is a pretty damning statistic for Perth, as the away side does not appear to be troubled when playing Perth. Adelaide would be expected to at least draw if they do not win

Perth has a top home record and most likely because of the hot, humid conditions in perth, although this is an evening game and won’t be quite as hot as an afternoon game. Perth have only lost to Melbourne and Queensland at home, and have a handy +5 goal difference. Adelaide on the other hand have struggled away all season and have only scored 4 goals on the road. Oddly enough, their only away wins were against Melbourne and Queensland.

In total games Adelaide score a goal around every 8 shots compared to Perth’s 13, so the away side has a better efficiency on the whole. However, at home Perth score a goal around every 11 shots compared to Adelaide’s one goal every 21 shots away from home. Perth have averaged around 19 shots a game at home compared to Adelaide’s 11 away, and this indicates that Adelaide are going to have to play fairly well to win this game.

Adelaide have scored 24 goals at home but only 4 away and this has been their downfall this season as they struggle to score away, they also struggle to make chances away as they only average 11 shots at goal away from home. This match has all the makings of an early goal and then the match should tighten up before the chance of goals again in the last 30 minutes.

Perth have promoted David Micevski and Mimi Saric while Ante Kovacevic is out suspended for one match. Adelaide welcome back Ross Aloisi, Robert Bajic and the promoted Robert Cornthwaite, while Bruce Djite is a short-term signing. The great Brazilian Romario’s guest stint has concluded, and Greg Owens is out with leg soreness.

ADELAIDE UNITED

Initially I liked Adelaide to win this but after seeing their poor shot for goal efficiency away from home compared to Perths great efficency at home I have changed my mind. Perth average almost 20 shots a game at home and are capable of scoring one or two, whereas Adelaide will need to have around ten shots to score one.

This brings the draw into play for me and I am going to bet on the draw, and also have a crack at Perth Draw No Bet as I believe it represents value. Adelaide are too short for mine considering they have only scored 4 goals away from home this season. Perth have beaten the Jets and Mariners at home and have drawn with Sydney while losing a close encounter to Melbourne 2-1 and are very capable of pinching this game against a poor away side in Adelaide.

PERTH GLORY / ADELAIDE DRAW @ $3-30

PERTH DRAW NO BET @ $2-15

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Although statistics say that this is a fixture that Adelaide traditionally win, I cannot back such a relatively short favourite, considering the number of home losses Perth have had, and the away wins of Adelaide. For me it's Perth (-0) @ $2.15 (Centrebet)

Blackcrow is right when he says Adelaide are the better team, but they have been sensational at home and not so good away. They do not even have that many shots away to be honest, and that is the worry for me as Perth average 19 shots a game at home.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) BJV: after seeing the way Perth played against Sydney, you would stay off them too. They had no shape, no structure to launch their attacks, especially with a man advantage. It was if they were happy to take a point away from home. Now i like the coach, Ron Smith, but he doesn't have the calibre of players for them to produce the kind of football he was renowned for at the AIS. If Adelaide is switched on, and i think they will be, especially as their is a derby between the two neighbouring states, i think they can win this quite comfortably. Also the loss of Kovacevic in the centre of the defence is huge for them, and with the return of Aloisi to run the Adelaide midfield, too many things are in Adelaide's favour. GL with your picks but for me, Adelaide looks good value. :cheers

Well summised Crow and you make some vaild points :ok I am more banking on a draw, not so much Adelaide winning, more Adelaide not losing. I think Perth will do enough attacking to conjur up a goal. I still remember Adelaide away to CCM when everything in their favour. CCM had players out and Mori gone, and Adelaide lost 2-0. They have burnt me too many times away from home, and while I think they have a great chance of winning, I am opting to not bet on them. Good luck with your bet though. Cheers :cheers

Perth - Played 7 games at home Scored 12 goals & conceeded 7. Kovacevic is out so may leave some open holes for Adelaide. Perth conceed 1 goal a game, while Adelaide conceed also 1 goal a game. Hard to pick a win. Going on history, Adelaide should win this as they have a good record in Perth but struggle to score away. Prediction: Both teams to score Ill also take Over 2.5 @1.9

Any opinions on the total guys? I lean towards OVER 2.5 goals but purely because I'm bored and can't find a reason to back either team to win .. My book has the UNDER at $1.77 .. OVER is $1.95
No idea to be honest Mr F. It's a toss of the coin job with Unders and Overs in my opinion. Noticed one thing though, these two teams have only had 2 draws each in 17 games, so odds say there is going to be a victor tonight on their efforts this season so far.

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Perth are starting to consolidate a bit. IT was all Adelaide early as they dominated posession, but Perth are beginning to gain more confidence in the midfield. Not alot of chances being created though by both teams, id expect it to remain 0-0 at half time

Re: Australian A League Round 18 (Thu Dec 28 - Mon Jan 1st) Looks like Perth's Naum Sekulovski has picked up a nasty shoulder injury. He looks in a lot of pain and has the medical staff just put his shoulder back in after a disolocation. Apparently he has had some problems all season with this and it has flared up again, so if he has to come off it will be a big loss for Perth as he has been doing well. Just anounced then that he will be substituted off.
