Ive booked to go at the end of this month for a few weeks..... Not going for anything other than the GAMBLING action :D. As they say in rounders "stacks and towers of chips I cant even see over" except it is going to be the tourist check-raising the locals and taking huge pots off them :dude Has any one been before? Surely they have? - would love some advice on where to play and where not to. I hear the heat on card counters is extremely bad over there so I had best stay away from the blackjack but I imagine the poker action is great. Have booked nothing but the flights, just gonna sort out the accom when we (me and a gambling mate) get there, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Gonna miss a few pl league games tho :o Jez

Re: Vegas Was in Vegas about 2 years ago but hadn't even started playing Poker then! I stayed at the Imperial Palace, not a massive hotel but on the main strip opposite Caesars Palace and certainly cheap enough. From what I remember not all the casinos offer Poker although that might have changed by now with the recent explosion in popularity. Bellagio, MGM Grand and Monte Carlo definetly had high stake poker rooms though as at the time I was shocked at seeing how much money was changing hands. To be fair most casinos are worth having a look at, there is always fish at a table. Very true about the card counters and the blackjack though, cameras everywhere. Another tip - try to control yourself with all of the free beer - it definetly affected my judgement at the tables on my visit! Of course you'll have to visit Binnions! Sure you'll have a great time, no doubt we'll hear all about it when you get back

Re: Vegas I've only been to the US once - in 2000 - but same attitude as you - nothing booked - see where we ended up - that's not acceptable to immigration control however - initially they turned us away - in the end the airline rep filled in the immigration card for us, saying we were booked into the Holiday Inn, Manhatton for the first night and they let us in - but make sure you have a "cover story" for first nights accommodation - they knew we didn't have anything booked, but I imagine since 2001 they're stricter. Not sure of the status of the Visa Waiver Program at the moment - I know after 2001 there was talk of it being abolished - but I think they changed their minds (as with the delay of compulsory Biotec passports) - anyway - I'm sure you've looked into it all and are on top of it. Have a cracking (and profitable) time........

Re: Vegas HiYa Jez, was in Vegas over Xmas, stayed at the Excalibur and played the cheap Limit $1/$3 poker tables (they have more expensive games too including NL, so maybe something in your league :D ). Excalibur is right at the end of the strip, so you might want to stay somewhere more central. 1st piece of advice - book a room before you go, suprisingly the casinos own websites are often best value. Rooms are cheaper weekdays, but think averaged out about $65 per night at Excalibur. I've heard that if you deposit a huge wadge of cash with the casino they might even give you a free room - but if you plan to be gambling fairly big make sure the pit boss knows about it, then they'll keep an account of your gambling and next trip could be free room/food. One room should suit the two of you - they tend to have two huge beds in each - if u get lucky you can always book another or make the mate go and play poker. Lot of teh poker rooms also do free food about 6ish - they don't want you leaving to eat. Its an experience not to be missed, even for (relative) non gamblers like me. The "tax" on the games in the poker rooms is sometimes wearing - house typically takes 5% rake and if you win then you are also expected to tip the dealer a dollar or two - free drinks, all you do is tip cocktail waitress a $1 - of course too many drinks affects your game. Enjoy yourself

Re: Vegas Vegas is great, I'm going back for New year's eve again this year. I've only played poker once on the last visit & that was the cheapest table I could find (didn't want to lose all my cash too quickly :\ ) All the casinos we went in seemed to have poker rooms & seemed busy all the time. All the hotels on the strip are huge & the ones I've stayed in have been really smart. Also you get free beer while playing, I was hammered by the time I left the table:D We played in the Excalibur & apparently they lay on a buffet each day (apart from New Years day when we played :( )

Re: Vegas Went to Vegas a couple of years ago and absolutely hated it. The most soul destroying place on the planet. However, this was before I'd started playing poker, so I might have a different attitude now. I stayed at the Four Queens Hotels for ten days. It worked out at about £35 a night. It's right opposite the famous Binions Horshoe Casino (which is a bit of a dump IMHO.) The only problem is that it's a bit of a hike to the strip. I've heard that the Excalibur has got the worst players. So you could do worse than take the fish to the cleaners there. DMC. sport_016.gif

Re: Vegas I stayed in Vegas for 10 days last month - played a couple of times at Binion's in downtown. The casino itself is nothing to look at in comparison to the ones on the strip but the poker room is atmospheric and I just had to play there! They have daily $60 buy-in tournys thrice daily (2am,2pm,8pm) and the 8pm tourny is $125 at weekends. All of these include a one time bonus buy of $10 (for 50% more chips) and one $40 optional re-buy. They also have STTs running continuousl - I only had to wait a few minutes to join in the action! As far as the strip is concerned just about every hotel casino has a decent sized poker room (as you would expect from Vegas) and a decent range of tournys/cash tables, etc. You can easily book accommodation when you get there with a wide range of choice, even some of the strip hotels are relatively cheap. I've stayed at 13 hotels on the strip and while the pricier ones (e.g. Luxor, MGM Grand) are somewhat better the cheapest (e.g. Excalibur, Stratosphere) are also to a decent standard. But Jezza if you want pure luxury you must stay at the Wynn hotel. It only opened 3 months ago and is without doubt IMO the best hotel in Vegas. Their poker room is already very lively although they have yet to introduce tournys (coming soon apparently). One of their luxury robes somehow appeared in my rucksack and I regularly play poker in it to retain that Vegas feel!! (online that is, not live!!) :lol SFK

Sh!t - Anyone been to their website? Talk about heavy - it takes 3 months to download!!!! Def not recommended if you're on Dial up!!! Don't know what takes so long - they promise "plenty of surprises" in their site - couldn't be bothered to find them though - even after the initial loooooong download, selecting another page leads to more downloads........there's no "light" version either - it might be technically impressive (I wouldn't know I couldn't be bothered to wait) - but I think their web designers have missed the point somewhere.......

:lol Nope that's not me, that is the lovely Jennifer Love Hewitt. There were some cracking birds playing in the Excalibur when I was there. One got me beat on the river a couple of times, but she was so cute I felt happy for her :tongue2 I just grabbed another free beer & carried on. I played for about 4 hours and ended up $20 down, but very pissed :ok :beer
