Alastair
3 minutes ago, BillyHills said: I don't bet Alastair Thanks ? ! Perhaps on a point of more general application, there's an interesting question for debate re bets like the Placepot which depend on the occasional big win to make up for the day to day losses that can be anticipated with bets like that - this win for you, theoretical or real, has come at the end of the 10th week of this thread; how many punters would keep going day after day for that length of time ? Personally I wouldn't . I prefer single win bets which normally will be on horses in the first six in the betting simply because the losing runs will be reasonably short and I know I won't lose my nerve. BillyHills
Alastair, I worked for Hills for over 10 years, some punters put a placepot on for big money every single day, and at more than one meeting. They just specialised in these 'pot' bets. They actually made a fair living out of tote bets. Look at me just doing my ratings and landed the Cheltenham placepot 3 days out of the four. It can pay over long term, you just have to accept you wont win as often as backing a favourite everyday.

Without going in to names my dad was a director at William Hill and is referred to in John Brown's autobiography. What I was trying to do was to stimulate conversation regarding different approaches to betting - as you say placepot betting requires a temperament that suits although given the relatively small pools that there can be I would have thought that punters betting for "big money" every day on the placepot ought to have realised that in many ways they were betting against themselves

Only the bookies that used the EPOS computer system could transfer tote bets straight to the course. Hills were one of the last to change over (waiting for others to sort out the teething problems) and most of the independents too. I'm not sure what its like now but I had to phone off the bets for some customers. Anyway lets not hog the thread

Nope most bookies that go 5 places now only give you 5th the odds some go 6 places in the big weekend handicap of the day but again only 5th the odds. Best to check all odds on oddschecker or the like.
