British and Irish Lions Tour 2017

The first match of the British and Irish Lions Tour 2017 in New Zealand takes place this weekend. The Lions are overwhelming favourites but these first games always carry a bit of a danger with them. Players needing time to gel together, the coach not sure on his strongest side, some fringe players thrown in with starters, and the nerves of the first game. I am a bit worried by the New Zealand Barbarians odds of 19.00. No game down under is a given in my opinion. The Lions could be playing a local school side and I'd still expect the host side to provide a challenge.

@harry_rag, will you be betting on any Lions games over the next couple of months?

Blues v Lions tomorrow.

Blues hotshots look at least a couple of points too low to me at 35 but as Rieko Ioane carries most threat you may just want to back him anytime at 6/4 with Hills. I'd already decided on that as a bet when I saw that the RP had tipped him at 13/8. Still a bet at 6/4, you could take 11/8 at a push but I wouldn't go any shorter.

A couple of Lions players worth an interest at the prices are Henshaw at 5/1 with Lads and Tipuric at 7/2 with Betfred.

The big one tomorrow, @harry_rag. What are you thinking? It's been a mish-mash of results and performances. I think the Lions need one hell of a shift to get something here. This New Zealand team is one of the best ever and if the Lions are anything but their best then they will get destroyed. I just think Gatland has chosen the wrong squad. I would like to be proven wrong and, as a Welshman, I really should have more faith. However, I just can't agree with some of the players he's left out e.g. Launchbury and Hartley etc.

Yes, it's here at last! A digest of opinions would suggest the Lions will keep it tight for a while but that the All Blacks will pull away in the end.

If I had to offer up 3 bets to give an interest throughout the game I'd say:

Barrett to score a try at 11/4 with Betfred - seen this tipped in at least 3 places and at just 5/2. Have to agree it's a sound bet especially at a better price.

New Zealand -5.5 second half handicap at 10/11 with BF Sportsbook - NZ on the 2nd half handicap is usually a sound bet these days and definitely appeals if you subscribe to the notion of the Lions only being able to contain them for so long

Over 0.5 cards shown at 4/5 and over 1.5 at 7/2 with Hills - ref Peyper has recent form when it comes to penalising and carding NZ and the prospect of at least one card being shown seems quite high. Back one or both (or neither) as you see fit, I've basically had a bet on >1.5 with a saver on >0.5.
