England have superior quality in their ranks, and this friendly will be one of those drab, low-tempo affairs at a half-empty Wembley. The only point of this game is if you are a punter, and are trying to scrabble some money out of this pointless fixture. I expect the game to be fairly lively (by these drab standards) for the opening half-hour, where England will take the lead, before a raft of subs at half-time will destroy any cohesion and flow to the game. Norway will probably pack plenty of players behind the ball and offer little in attack. Oh and Betvictor are also offering 23/10 for England to win one or two nil - that also seems fairly grand to me.

I am sure that if Norway wish to show something to watchers, they shall be doing it six days later in their home qualifier against Italy, which is an actual competitive fixture that has meaning. Most unlike this friendly at Wembley which, apparently, will only have 40,000 people attending. And it were the Scandinavian side who played the UAE last week, at home, and failed to score...cannot say I am too optimistic for their chances of netting against England.

Midfield especially looks incredibly weak, Colback was hardly a key player at Sunderland last season, how is he in the squad? Townsend, Milner, Delph!? It reads like a b squad but unfortunately they are the best we have. Attack doesn't really fill me with confidence either, Sturridge is the only one who has shown form in the last year, Rooney probably won't even start in an striking position for United anymore now Falcao is there. I would say it is the weakest squad I have ever seen us turn out for a competitive game - this being the same squad who will play Switzerland too.

I suppose some substitutions will be made in the second half to give the fringe players some experience, and to keep the first eleven in tip-top shape for the more important, and tougher, game against the Swiss. England should stroll to an uninspiring one or two nil win.

For the first time ever I find myself looking up an England squad on wiki because I wasn't too aware of a few players. Colback, and stones being the obvious. However I'm absolutely shocked things have dropped so far that we're having to rely on players like Fabian Delph in midfield to make the numbers up, and a past his best Rickie Lambert. Let's be honest Lambert should have been plating higher level football and earning caps around the time he initially left Bristol Rovers. Really poor squad overall. For the record in case anyone was thinking of using Norway's recent friendly against UAE, 99% of the squad was home grown so the overall look and feel of their team will be different I'm sure.

Other players are in the squad due to injuries, so I would not be unduly worried - England's first eleven from this squad is still decent, even if the depth is suspect.

Germany won the tournament, but now the team seems different. I doubt it. It is just that this game is getting more attention from bettors in the last 12 hours before kick-off than it does in the previous days. So, it means that the market (i,e. "average bettor") believes the price should be higher. This doesn't mean that the market is right. The big majority of punters who will bet on this game are not familiar with neither of the teams and haven't watched a single game of any of them in the last 2 years. Hence, they are relying mainly from stats from soccerway and similar sites. And when you open soccerway on Qatar you see a lot of "green color" and "orange color", meaning games Qatar won or drew. And you see a lot of "red" for Morocco. This most likely have influenced the most the price move. But if you dig into more detail, you will see Qatar achieved good results either at home or in much weaker competitions. In serious games in World Cup qualifiers, they performed very bad on the road (for instance, 5:1 loss in Uzbekistan). Morocco is at the level of top 3-4 Asian teams (Japan, Iran, Australia). If you research their team, you will see they got a whole plethora of players from good European leagues and teams (unlike Qatar). They were under process of rejuvenation of the team, and this was maybe the key reason (along with the tough group) why they failed to go to Brazil. But they still have much more quality than Qatar. Also, i have seen some home games of Morocco, and the atmosphere is very hot - full stands, vocal support and pyrotechnics - all these make for a hostile environment.

I have been looking at elo ratings recently, and applying them to this week's friendlies ... http://www.eloratings.net/ Qatar's elo rating is 1477 and Morocco's 1514, suggesting Qatar are good value tonight at odds of over 7.0. But I am new to elo ratings and I'm not sure how they translate across different continents. As you say, Morocco's squad looks much more impressive than Qatar's.

Re: International Friendlies 3rd Sept - 7th Sept 2014 Ireland -v- Oman, 3rd September 7.45pm BST kick-off Ireland host Paul LeGuen's Oman tonight in an international friendly being played at the Aviva Stadium. It's an opportunity for both sides to prepare for their respective looming qualification campaigns, more so especially for Ireland who kick-off their Euro 2016 qualification campaign on Sunday when they travel to Georgia. Martin O'Neill will use tonight's game as an opportunity to give certain players match practice, whom otherwise have not had ample opportunities thus far this season to avail of game time. In goals O'Neill has indicated that the duties will be shared between Shay Given, who is back-up goalkeeper at Aston Villa and has surprisingly come out of international retirement, and Rob Elliot who is back-up goalkeeper at Newcastle United. Shay played a single ninety minutes in the League Cup a few weeks ago, while Rob Elliot has yet to play, so O'Neill is anxious both players are given an opportunity tonight to stake a place in goals for Sunday's game against Georgia. Actually, it's the no.1 shirt that has been up for debate in the past week since Shay Given has returned to international duty. With 125 caps to his name, he was for a long time by far the best keeper Ireland had available, and indeed it could be argued he is the best goalkeeper Ireland have ever produced. Questionable performances from David Forde during the summer international games, as well as uncertain first team football in recent times for Kieran Westwood, means that not one single player has made the shirt their own. Therefore Shay Given returns tonight. Tonight also offers an opportunity for Darron Gibson to play his first match in 12 months, since suffering a cruciate knee injury on duty for Ireland when they beat Kazakhstan 3-1 last October. The Everton midfielder is a very talented footballer, who has had terrible fortune with injuries, especially with his knees. He is fit once again, and O'Neill is anxious to start him tonight and offer him an opportunity to gain match fitness. If he comes through unscathed and if he plays well, it's quite likely he'll feature on Sunday against Georgia. Players that won't feature tonight for Ireland are James McCarthy, James McClean and Joey O'Brien. McCarthy is being rested for Sunday's game, while McClean is carrying a knock, and so will also be rested for Sunday's game. Joey O'Brien has returned to West Ham due to picking up an injury. Jonathan Walters is also carrying a knock, but there's the possibility he may be involved tonight. Otherwise there is no other news available as to O'Neill's plans for tonight, but it's likely he'll start in defence Seamus Coleman, Stephen Ward, and then two centre halves from the likes of John O'Shea, Richard Keogh, Marc Wilson and Alex Pearce. On the wings, it's almost certain Robbie Brady will take up one of the flanks, while it's almost as likely Anthony Pilkington will be on the other flank. Shane Long should probably start up front, but Anthony Stokes, Robbie Keane and even Kevin Doyle could be involved too. Robbie Keane is eager to play, and has recovered from an injury he was suffering from last week, and even scored at the weekend with a glorious nutmeg and chip to assure O'Neill he's fit and ready for the challenge on Sunday. Ireland's team will therefore be quite strong tonight, and the expectation will be to play well as a team and beat Oman at home. These sides met each other two years ago in Craven Cottage, London, where Ireland won 4-1 on the night. That match just so happened to be a debut for Robbie Brady, who starred on the night with a goal and an assist. His return from injury is a very important element for Ireland if they are to be in the reckoning of qualifying for Euro 2016. Oman come to Dublin having narrowly missed out on a playoff match in the Asian World Cup qualifiers, in order to potentially advance to the World Cup confederation playoffs. They were competitive in their group, which included Australia and Japan, drawing twice with Australia. That said, Australia were poor in that qualifying campaign, and they also lost twice to Japan, 3-0 away and 2-1 at home. The reality is that an away test against European opposition like Ireland is a much bigger challenge than usual for Oman, and so it may be a step too far for Paul LeGuen's side today. To make things just a little more challenging for them, their best player, Imad Al-Hosni, who has 39 international goals to his name, has been omitted (or really, excused) from the original squad in order for him to try and find a new club. Their only English based player, goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, is second choice at English Championship side Wigan. Otherwise the rest of the players are in pre-season mode, as the Omani league doesn't kick off until after this international break. So personally, I feel this will be too difficult a game for Oman. It was this time two years ago when they played Ireland, and in similar circumstances, where their players had yet to play any competitive club football, as the new season hadn't kicked off, they lost by three clear goals. Today I think they'll find it more difficult, since that particular Ireland team was a second string team, full of youngsters and fringe players. Today's Irish team will be marginally stronger and more intent on giving a good display at home, especially after six games without a win. So I'm tipping Ireland -1AH for all the reasons above. I don't expect Ireland to fail to win this game, and I do expect they can win by a margin of 2 goals tonight. There's definitely question marks over the starting XI O'Neill will choose, as well as question marks surrounding whether his team are really clicking under his brand of international football. Furthermore, there's no doubting Paul LeGuen has been able to improve the overall standing and performances of his Oman team since two years ago. Still, for the reasons I've outlined above, including Oman's players not being match-fit and still in pre-season mode, as well as it being a difficult away fixture against European opposition, I have no hesitation to believe Ireland will at the very least win this game by a single goal tonight. Minimum odds are 1.70 on this line. There's probably an opportunity to get better in-play odds too. Good luck! My pick: Ireland -1AH @ 1.77 odds with Pinnacle (2 unit stakes)

With a tough game v Switzerland ahead obviously they won't want to tire the players too much so I do agree with England leading at HT.
