I see what you mean .........after ive ruled out negative horses ....too much weight ......no form ......don't handle ground etc ........ of the ones left on shortlist .........theatrical star and Sydney paget are class 2 horses whereas he is gr3 horse and better .........some 60000 above them .............enuf said......on paper it looks done and dusted ?....I know it never works like that but on paper he looks an amazing bet ........especially if can get e.w price? does anyone know his price?

Re: Key Race: Peter Marsh Chase : Haydock 3.15, Sat 18th Jan. Chance du Roy was a mile behind Katenko last season at Sandown, so surely he must be up there in your ratings. First thing to point out, is heavy rain is forecast to fall on heavy ground. Second, the chase course suits prominent runners. Step forward Katenko. Took a couple of runs last season to come right, then he did with a bang. Big wins at cheltenham and Sandown, with the form starting to work out well. Had a Hennesey and paddy power winners behind, amongst others. Was in the process of running a big race in the Hennesey, when falling 7 out. Then went to Aintree, where quite possibly, the course didn't suit. Has since been rested since, and no doubt targeted for this race by his trainer, who has won this race a few times before and whose stable continues to be in fine form. Finally, he's by Laveron, who loved bottomless ground, Katenko looks the same type.

yes .........good point ..............for a minute there I thought id made a mistake .......but he failed to make my shortlist cos of his weight ..........a light weight seems essential in this especially if ground comes up very soft ...........he still has chances and I can understand if you backed him but with only one horse carrying over 11-6 in ten years ...............ive opposed anything over that point

Both run in the graduation chase earlier on the card.

Re: Key Race: Peter Marsh Chase : Haydock 3.15, Sat 18th Jan. Bit surprised that Katenko is favourite.....he still has to prove that he's come back from his colic operation. His 2 runs this season have produced a fall and a 41L defeat I'd like to see some evidence that he's fully recovered

Re: Key Race: Peter Marsh Chase : Haydock 3.15, Sat 18th Jan. I think this race has changed over the last few years, when we had the old stiff fences and galloping track it suited the low weights but now its a much more sharper circuit and we have these portable fences the better horses seem to have come out on top. (May be coincidence?) Anyway having said that i do think Vino Griego is just too high in the handicap, he's gone up 8 lbs for his last win and 20 lbs since this time last year. The Minack is a risky proposition and for my money Chance Du Roy is an Aintree specialist these days. Apart from his two good runs over the National fences he hasn't really fired on conventional tracks. Sydney Paget is very good on his day and pretty ordinary on others, i saw him win at Haydock on Betfair Chase day and he galloped his rivals into the ground. He's 10 lbs high now and ran a stinker last time. I heard McCain say that he was putting him way as he had lost his sparkle but has recently been more himself so has entered him at the last minute. Don't like the sound of that to be honest? Vintage Star and Merry King had hard races in the Welsh National and i'd be happier if they had more time to get over that so my selection is Katenko. The yard are flying and this horse was backed to win the Gold Cup last year after a couple of tremendous performances. We all know he was ill after that but i thought personally ran with promise last time despite getting beat a fair way. You have to remember this horse is ground dependant and must have it very soft or even heavy to show his best, he hasnt had that since his comeback and conditions here will be ideal. 2pts Katenko 5/1 bet365

Re: Key Race: Peter Marsh Chase : Haydock 3.15, Sat 18th Jan. Haydock 3:15 - Peter Marsh Chase (Limited Handicap) (Grade 2) The Venetia Williams trained Katenko will thrive in these heavy conditions and warrants a lot of respect but the real value in the race for me is the Paul Nicholls trained The Minack. If reports are anything to go by, the horse has been training very well at home since his knee injury and with his 100% record fresh he looks a big price off a decent mark. Re: Key Race: Peter Marsh Chase : Haydock 3.15, Sat 18th Jan. Haydock 3.15 - Night Alliance 7/1 Bet365 BOG This is an interesting race with a few runners who have something to prove. Vino Gregio needs to show that his last run didnt flatter him, Katenko needs to fully show that he is back at his best, The Minack has had a long time off the track and Chance Du Roy needs to prove he is back to his best over the normal fences. All very capable of winning off their respective marks but hard to have full confidence that they are in form. At the other end of the scale you have a few that look in great form but need to show they are up to this level, namely Vintage Star, Merry King (to an extent), Sydney Paget and finally my selection Night Alliance. I regrettably left him out last time as I was worried about how well he would bounce back from a nasty fall the time before, but he showed no ill effects and popped around here with plenty in hand to beat two good yardsticks in No Planning and Loch Ba. The form of that race hasnt worked out badly either with the 4th and 6th running well or winning since. Looking back to the race he fell in, he was again up against No Planning (and looked to be just starting to get on top) but the progressive winner would have been them both easily enough, although the selection did look to be staying on. Again that form is solid and so is his comfortable victory the time before at Ascot. The ground and trip are perfect and whilst he is going up a lot in class, I do think he has the potential to land a pot like this.
