Newly promoted, they've managed to finish the Apertura on 6th place and earned themselves a play-off place where they've defeated Union Espanola 1-0(H), 0-0(A). In the semis they play Catolica, and managed to win the first leg 2-1 at home. Catolica also got 2 players sent off in the 2nd half, Mirosevic and Valenzuela who will miss this game. The succes of Calera has its foundings in their home results. They won 8 of the 10 games played, while on the road they only managed one win all season. I saw their return leg with Espanol. Their taks was simple, defend and look to conserve the advantage from the 1st leg, and they shall try to do the same here. They did defend very well, but at times Espanola easily broke them especially on the wings but lacked efficiency as they missed a penalty and other chances from inside the penalty area. At the other end Calera built their attacks well till entering the penalty area where they either lacked creativity or the shots weren't good enough. Catolica is the strongest team in Chile when it comes to their home matches. They always defend well, they are a pragmatic team who usually play only for the score which suits them afterwhich they use their defensive skills. Unlike Espanola, they have no problems in finfing the back of the net. Players like Guttierez or Pratto can score from any position if given the chance. They open the play extremelly well on the wings as well. They are clear favorites going into this game. Calera is very inefficient in their away games, this season they've never scored more than one goal in their trips, while given the solid defence of Catolica, taking the Home team to keep a clean sheet looks like a solid option. Catolica on the other hand should be able to take a 1-0 lead from which point on they should look for a 2nd to give them the edge in this double fixture. At the same time, odds for over 2.5 are extremelly low, since Calera is very inefficient in their away games, and Catolica usually don't bother with winning by much more than they actually need to. So if they have a 2-0 lead, don't expect them to break their necks for a 3rd goal. So in the end, I'm taking Catolica handicap covering just a 1 goal win. Clearly the best and most consistent side in Chile, reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores (should have passed to the semis), has great players and a very good manager. Its been a great year for them. U de Chile has been the second best team, second only to Catolica. Came out just 3 points behind the leaders with 35 points. U de Chile haven't lost once in their last 10 games. Last time these two met in regular season we saw a 2-2 draw. La Catolica also drew 1-1 with Colo Colo during regular season, while U de Chile if not for a last minute goal by Rivarola would have fairly drawn 1-1 with Colo Colo. We have seen more draws between the top 3 teams in Chile than anything else. And while anything can happen in these sort of games (red cards are my biggest fear) I'm expecting a draw. U de Chile needs to win with a 3-goal-margin now to become champion. Obviously this is highly unrealistic and U Catolica will win their back-to back title here. But on the other hand there is a rivalry between both of these teams, it is the final, it is in front of a sold out crowd. So La U can't back down without a fight and will try to attack from the beginning and take high risks. Thursday they showed they are able to create chances against Catolica, but lacked in the conversion. Catolica was defensively minded in the first leg, will it be again but proved they are an able counterattacking side 3 days ago and also against Gremio in the Libertadores and partially against Colo when they pressed for the win in the quarterfinals. Being very hard to chose a favorite to win this match I prefer choosing a high goal line, the odd of 5 being attracting for me, I just need minimum 2 goals until ht. Main reason for this has been a really poor away record with just 3 points from 8 games. At home they did earn a couple more points but when they played against strong teams like O'Higgins, Union Espanola or Colo Colo they conceded at least 3 goals and the games were highy entertaining. Universidad de Chile won 3-1 at home in the Apertura. They've started Clausura with a solid 3-0 win over La Serena. Nublense also won 1-0 at Santiago Wanderers, but have every reason to fear this game as they'l have an impossible task in keeping a clean sheet, and I do expect them to get exposed at the back in what should be a normal day at the office for the Apertura champions.
