  1. Re: Key Race: Becher Handicap Chase, 2.05 Aintree Saturday Dec 7th 2:05 Aintree – Becher Chase This has a very competitive look to it, but there is a horse declared that I have long thought would be a fascinating runner over these big fences and it is VESPER BELL. Willie Mullins would not be bringing him over to England if he did not think he had a good chance and he certainly had some decent form as a novice last season. I was very impressed with his win at Punchestown last December and he was unlucky not to win a competitive handicap on his final start of last season. He is on a fair mark, stays this trip well and could really take to these fences. He looks an interesting bet at odds of 16/1.

He is on a fair mark, stays this trip well and could really take to these fences. He looks an interesting bet at odds of 16/1. 2:25 Sandown – Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts December Handicap Hurdle RIVER MAIGUE made a very pleasing debut over hurdles last season, running Dodging Bullets close (receiving seven pounds) in a Grade Two contest at Cheltenham, who is now rated 154 over hurdles, so a mark of 140 looks fair. He looked good on his next start, easily winning a decent novice hurdle race at Kempton’s Christmas fixture. The key to him is that he needs a good pace and he should get it here. I know he is held in some regard at Seven Barrows, so there is every chance that he is capable of defying top weight to win on ground that should hold no fears. 3:00 Sandown – Tingle Creek It is a huge shame that Sprinter Sacre is missing from the race, but as a result this is a huge opportunity for SIRE DE GRUGY to win a Grade One race. Twice a winner at Grade Two level, he has now established himself as one of the top two mile chasers in the country. Last season he ran a solid race to win the Celebration Chase over the course and distance of this race and he looked very good on his seasonal debut, conceding a lot of weight, when winning at Chepstow. He just failed to concede ten pounds to Kid Cassidy last time out at Cheltenham, but that possibly is not his track and with a 100% record over fences going right-handed, he should go very well in this. Captain Conan looks the big danger. He beat Sir De Grugy on his chase debut at Cheltenham and has a 100% record at Sandown (three wins from three starts). He is a very good horse on his day, but just may need the run, so preference is for Sire De Grugy.

  3. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday November 30th 1:55 Fairyhouse – Dermot Fagan Lifetime Achievement In Racing Beginners Chase There are twenty runners declared and this should be a good race. Won by Mount Benbulben in 2012 and Sir Des Champs in 2011, the winner could turn out to be above average and I believe SIZING GOLD will be hard to beat. He showed useful form in novice hurdles last season, including beating Morning Assembly at Leopardstown, but he looks much more of a chaser. His yard remains in good form and the trip looks ideal for him and if he takes to chasing like I expect him to, he should run a big race. 2:05 Newcastle – StanJames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle Tony McCoy has given up the ride on At Fisher’s Cross to ride MY TENT OR YOURS and that is a tip in itself. This looks the perfect race for him as his slick jumping and high cruising speed will see him bang in contention approaching the last and then his turn of foot should see off the opposition. He is a real class act and the trip, ground and track look in his favour. He is a confident selection. 3:00 Newbury – Hennessy Gold Cup This looks a really good race this year, with several up and coming chasers declared and many will fancy their chances. For around a year now I have thought that ROCKY CREEK is the ideal Hennessy horse and he has to be my selection. I thought he was the one to beat in last season’s RSA Chase, but connections decided to miss the race to save him for this year. They believed he was not mature enough last year to show his best, but is expected to show improved form this season. The trip, track and ground look ideal and he has been targeted at this race since the spring. He is a strong horse, that usually jumps well and I can see him travelling well for most of the race just off the pace before making his challenge and if all goes to plan, he should be involved in the finish. It is competitive, but I really fancy his chances. Highland Lodge looks a good each-way alternative. Emma Lavelle has her string in much better form this season, but he still showed good form last year. On his chase debut he easily beat Same Difference who went on to win at the Cheltenham Festival. He then ran Harry Topper and Benefficient close at Newbury (both horses have gained big victories since), before easily beating Our Father at Cheltenham. He ran a good race against a well handicapped rival on his seasonal debut and still looks fairly handicapped off a mark of 143 (eleven pounds better off with Rocky Creek compared to when finishing third to him at Warwick, beaten 19 ½ lengths). He should go well and finish in the places.

  5. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday November 23rd 1:50 Haydock – Best Odds Guaranteed With Betfair Sportsbook Handicap Hurdle Zuider Zee travelled like the winner at Huntingdon recently, jumping well throughout and looked set to win, only to be found out close home by Hidden Identity. The pair finished a long way clear though and it could be good form. I was there that day and he did not look 100% fit in the parade ring, so I expect improvement from him. He has gone up in the handicap though, but he was a classy horse on the flat (rated 108 at his peak) and has winning form on soft ground, so should run a big race. He faces a serious opponent though in BLUE FASHION, who looks a major danger. I was really impressed with him on his debut for Nicky Henderson, finishing fourth at Auteuil. He was only three and a half lengths behind Ptit Zig that day, who has gone on to win at Grade One level this month. A rating of just 143 could under-estimate him, especially as he had only just joined Henderson’s team when running at Auteuil, so he could have improved a lot. He looks a potentially high class recruit and could be a class above these. 2:40 Ascot – Coral Hurdle There may only be four horses declared, but we could be in for a cracking race. Annie Power is unbeaten in seven starts and could be very good. All of her wins have been on testing ground though and conditions will be different at Ascot. ZARKANDAR is a serious opponent for her as he is unbeaten on right-handed tracks (three wins from three starts) and is unbeaten when fresh (four wins from four starts), he has also never been beaten over two and a half miles when completing the course, but admittedly that was just one run. That run was against The New One though who is favourite for the Champion Hurdle, so he sets a high standard. There may not be much between them on the day, but as he is the outsider of the pair, Zarkandar is my selection. 3:00 Haydock – Betfair Chase This looks a fantastic renewal of the race and whoever wins, will have to be a top class horse. Bobs Worth is unbeaten going left-handed and is the one to beat, but I feel Haydock won’t play to his strengths and he had such a hard race in the Gold Cup, that I want to take him on. SILVINIACO CONTI is my idea of the winner. He is a strong stayer that usually jumps really well. He really impressed in winning this race last year and on ground that suits, can win again. I am not sure there is much value in his price though, but at longer odds Long Run looks great each-way value at 12/1. Until last time out, he had never finished out of the first three in 18 starts and is a proven class performer. He has run well in this race before and an excuse for his last run has been found. The extra distance of this year’s race should also be in his favour, so he looks the value call. 3:05 Gowran Park – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Novices’ Chase DOGORA makes his chase debut and should prove too good for the opposition. He made a big impression on his hurdles debut last season, making all to win easily at Limerick and then came out best in a close finish with Dalasiri at Gowran Park. He finished last season by finishing third in a Grade One race behind Diakali and could be even better over fences. He receives lumps of weight from his opponents and with the Willie Mullins team in such fine form; he should make a winning debut over fences.

  6. Re: National Hunt Racing > Sunday November 17th 1:00 Cheltenham – Mallard Pawnbrokers And Family Jewellers Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle SAUSALITO SUNRISE:- looks a very well handicapped horse. I was really impressed when I saw him at Huntingdon and thought he was a sure fire future winner. He should have won on his next start, as he was clear and idled on the run-in, only to be caught on the line. On his final start he took on the very promising Up And Go at Ascot and was not disgraced. The winner is rated 142, so a mark of 117 in this gives him a great chance. 1:45 Punchestown – Dobbins Outdoor Catering Florida Pearl Novices’ Chase MORNING ASSEMBLY:- has a great record at Punchestown, winning a bumper, over hurdles and a novice chase. He looked a horse with a bright future when winning the Grade One Irish Daily Mirror Novices’ Hurdle at the track in April and impressed on his chase debut in October. I expect him to progress and although he faces a tough opponent in Don Cossack, he looks a more solid option and I expect him to win.

  7. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday November 16th Paddy Power Gold Cup – Cheltenham, Saturday 16th November In the recent history of the Paddy Power Gold Cup only Celestial Gold in 2004 has managed to win this race despite never having recorded a victory over 2m4f or 2m 5f. He had however won over further and therefore his stamina was not in doubt in when taking on this 2½ mile contest. Last year’s winner Al Ferof had won over 2m4f over hurdles as a novice and relished the return to that trip last year. This stat applies to five of this year’s field with Battle Group, Woolcombe Folly, Kumbeshwar, Colour Squadron and Tatenen all falling from the field at this obstacle. Seven-year-olds have been the ones to follow in recent years and many of the well fancied horses in this year’s renewal fall into this bracket. There will be six starters from this age-group on Saturday with the likes of Ballynagour, Astracad and Easter Meteor all attempting to add to the tally of seven wins in the last ten years. As always with contests here, it is often important for horses to have shown prior form around Cheltenham and an ability to handle the undulations of the course. Nine of the runners here have not previously tasted success here which accounts for the likes of Colour Squadron and Conquisto. It would be easy for students of trends to begin to doubt the validity of the trend surrounding weight, especially considering that two of the last three winners of the race have defied it. However six of the last ten winners of this race have still carried 10st 13lbs or more. Once again many of the leading fancies fall into this category with Finian’s Rainbow, Champion Court and Rajdhani Express all making the cut along with Conquisto and Hidden Cyclone. In terms of trainers to follow, the Pond House yard of the Pipe’s is certainly one worth keeping an eye on in this race. Martin Pipe managed to saddle eight winners of the race when he held the license, making him the most successful trainer in recent times. His son David saddled his first winner in the race in 2011 when Great Endeavour stormed up the hill to victory and this year he is represented by Ballynagour. Also with only one victory in the last decade, Irish runners continue to have a poor record in the race. This year they are represented by two horses but considering the recent evidence, it would require a large leap of faith to trust those runners. It is also worth noting that six of the last ten winners of the race were seasonal debutants. There are only seven such horses entered this year but some of them are amongst the principals including Champion Court, Ballynagour and Nadiya De Le Vega. The final trend worthy of a mention is that surrounding the betting. Six of the last ten winners have come from the first three in the betting and although the market is still open to change, the current favourite is John’s Spirit followed by Champion Court, Rajdhani Express and Ballynagour. Shortlist Champion Court – 6/7 Rajdhani Express – 6/7 Ballynagour – 5/7 Finian’s Rainbow – 5/7 Conclusion There are two horses who match all but one of the trends here and they are CHAMPION COURT and Rajdhani Express. The only trend under which both horses fall short is the one surrounding age as they are both eight and six years of age respectively. Both horses can boast victories here at Cheltenham and at the distance, so they look closely matched in most respects. Rajdhani Express looked very progressive last year winning three of his last four starts towards the back end of last season, including the Listed Rewards4Racing Chase at the Cheltenham Festival Champion Court also enjoyed a good season, finishing fourth in the King George and winning the Grade 2 Silver Trophy in April. He is marginally preferred to his younger rival having been campaigned at a higher level generally and this race should suit the eight-year-old really well. Ballynagour also deserves a mention as he represents the Pipe team who have had so much success in this race in recent years. He fits most of the trends but sits below the 10st 13lb threshold on 10st 6lb as well as having run below par on his only Cheltenham start. That was only his second start in Britain however and he is entitled to have come on for that experience and looks to have a good chance of going close here. The final member on the shortlist is Finian’s Rainbow who won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham in 2012. He followed that success with victory in the Melling Chase over 2m4f a month later but failed to reach the same heights last season. He carries top weight here which as we know isn’t always a negative and although at the age of ten he would be the oldest winner of the race since 1975, he should not be dismissed here.

  9. Re: Cheltenham Open Meeting Help and Advice Needed!

Morning All!! New poster on here, please be gentle:unsure I'm lucky enough to be going down for the Saturday & Sunday of next weeks meeting at Cheltenham and, having the day off today (and no more till I go!) was hoping to have a bit of a swot up on whats running, or at least what is expected to run next week. Obviously declarations are not out yet but is there any good sites that I could look at potential runners from stables, or even just a full race card for both days so that I can do a bit of searching around myself? I've already looked at the feature races for both days as the markets are up (got to be Dynaste for me as look to get back my losses on him from the festival last year:wall) but any info, tips or useful insight please let me know guys.
before you depart with your hard earned cash make sure that dynaste is running as hes a possible n/runner it all depends if top weight finians rainbow stands its ground, if it does not run dynaste will have to carry top weight and then he will be aimed at the betfair chase as for runners ect the cut off point is today 11/11/2013 the max field will be 20 but 49 have been entered check this site out for runners ect click on major national hunt races and on the drop down click paddy power gold cup there is also a bit about the steel sections chase on the friday and the greatwood hurdle on the sunday. be lucky http://www.racingbetter.co.uk/
  10. Re: NH Racing Sunday 10th November 2:45 Market Rasen – John Lucas Memorial Novices’ Handicap Chase GULLINBURSTI: has never run a bad race going right handed, having won twice and finished placed on the other two occasions. He was a decent hurdler and finished second to Rocky Creek at Grade Two level. He failed to win in four attempts over fences last season, but Emma Lavelle never had her string firing then and she has been in great form over the last few months. On his chase debut he ran well behind Rocky Creek and Harry Topper, form that looks good now and he also ran a fair race behind Hawke’s Point at Exeter. A mark of 134 looks good, when you consider that both Rocky Creek and Harry Topper are rated in the 150s and I fancy him to win.

  11. Re: jump racing 9/11/2013

2:00 Naas – Naas Annual Membership Beginners Chase ROAD TO RICHES: a winning Irish point-to-pointer is fancied to win. An impressive winner of a bumper on his debut under rules, he also looked good on his first two starts over hurdles, winning both, including a Grade 3 at Cork. He failed to fire in the Spring, but has never been beaten running up to Christmas. He handles soft ground very well and looks much more of a chaser than hurdler. This looks a decent Beginners Chase though to make his debut in, but he could be very good over fences, so is selected to win. 2:40 Wincanton – Badger Ales Trophy Paul Nicholls has a great record at this meeting and he has a leading chance of winning this race. He trains Aiteen Thirtythree who was a useful novice, but has been off the course for almost two years, so preference is for POUNGACH who has been trained to be spot on for this race. He was a classy hurdler (rated 155 at his peak) and he promises to be equally as good over fences. He stayed on to finish second on this card last year behind Houblon des Obeaux, who looked so good winning at Ascot recently. He went up ten pounds for that win, so a mark of 144 could be lenient for Poungach. His best win last season was when staying on strongly to beat Super Duty at Haydock, who went on to run so well at the Cheltenham Festival. I feel he could be even better this season and looks well handicapped and I expect him to run a big race. The main danger looks to be Standing Ovation. I was very impressed with him last time, when he pulled clear of the field with Highland Lodge who prior to the race I thought was very well handicapped. That was a great run and he clearly loves Wincanton, having won his last two races at the track, so despite a ten pounds jump in his rating, he could still prove a massive danger and is seriously respected.
happy with the first one, pitty about poungach but mentioned standing ovation

  13. Re: key race - paddy power gold cup - 16/11/2013 done two for the race just hope they run but on a few £ e/way Paddy Power Gold Cup – Cheltenham Saturday November 16th The key statistic to take into consideration here is that every winner since 1991 had already won over at least two and a half miles (including point-to-point form). It is also worth noting that 12 of the last 15 winners had also won at Cheltenham over fences and 10 of the last 12 were rated between 136 and 150. This does not look a vintage renewal of the race so the winner may not prove to be more experienced than usual. CHAMPION COURT is on target for the race and has a leading chance. He has three course victories to his name and the only time he has finished out of the first three over fences at Cheltenham in six attempts was when he finished fifth to Cue Card in the RyanAir. He handles most ground and it is worth remembering that he was beaten less than five lengths by Sir Des Champs off level weights in the Jewson. Sir Des Champs is a 170+ horse, so a mark of 157 is not too bad. He also ran very well for a long way against Long Run in the King George, so he is clearly a class act. Two and a half miles is very much his trip though and on a track that suits, he should run well and looks over priced at 14/1. THIRD INTENTION really impressed me last time out, jumping well to win at Cheltenham. Although still a novice, he has plenty of chase experience at a high level, including finishing a close second to Captain Conan at Sandown and second to Dynaste at Aintree. He was a classy hurdler also and stays this trip well. He looks to be improving and could run well at decent odds. CHAMPION COURT 2PTS EACH-WAY (14/1 – B365, STAN JAMES & WILLIAM HILL) & THIRD INTENTION 1PT EACH-WAY (20/1 – B365 , STAN JAMES & WILIAM HILL)
