  1. Re: Friday 4:00 > Foxhunter Chase taken from irishracing.com Salsify Cheltenham run in doubt Salsify faces a crucial seven days if he is to attempt to land the CGA Foxhunter Chase at Cheltenham for the third year in a row. Rodger Sweeney's nine-year-old knocked a joint in a gallop last week and has missed his last two scheduled pieces of work. Sweeney has already ruled him out of his intended run at Leopardstown this weekend in the Raymond Smith Memorial. "He's not running Sunday as he knocked a joint in a gallop last Tuesday," said Sweeney. "We thought we'd be able to help him get over it, but we haven't so we'll just have to keep monitoring it. "He's missed his last two pieces of work and if he misses it next week then he won't be going to Cheltenham, you can't go there unless you are 100 per cent fit. "So, the dream is dashed at the minute but that's horses for you." Salsify was a fortunate winner at Cheltenham last year as Oscar Delta unseated Jane Mangan after the last but he turned the tables emphatically at Punchestown a month later, beating the same rival by 35 lengths.

  2. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday January 25th Saturday 25th January 2:15 Leopardstown – Killiney Novice Chase This looks a really good race, but the one I fancy is DJAKADAM. As a hurdler I thought he would make a cracking chaser and he did not let me down on his chase debut, where he stayed on well to win at Leopardstown. He was a decent juvenile hurdler and should rate much higher over fences. The ground will be soft, which suits him fine and the fact that he receives eight pounds from all his opponents should make him hard to beat. Road To Riches is a decent horse though and could trouble the selection, but he has always shown his best form leading up to Christmas and although this trip will suit him better than the two miles he ran over last time, I still expect Djakadam to come out on top. 2:25 Cheltenham – Argento Chase ROCKY CREEK is one of my favourite horses and will have the soft ground that he requires. He is very much on the up and in my opinion the only reason he failed to win the Hennessy was down to the ground being quicker than ideal. He is held in high regard at Paul Nicholls yard and is the one to beat. As a novice he showed top class form, including beating Houblon des Obeaux at level weights (receives one pound here). He is a thorough stayer also, which will be needed in the soft conditions and I expect the Cheltenham hill to suit him. He also has a great record in the first two months of the year, having won all four starts. My only fear is that this race has a history of shock results and if there was to be a shock The Giant Bolster could be the one. He has finished second in a Gold Cup and won easily on this card in 2012. He needs to bounce back, but receives weight from all the others and is the one I fear most. 3:00 Cheltenham – Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle RED SHERLOCK may not have beaten much so far over hurdles, but he has done it very easily. The winner of all three starts in bumpers, including at Cheltenham in November, he is quickly developing into a very decent hurdler. He receives weight from his main rivals in this and although Rathvinden is very much respected, he fell last time out and that may have affected his confidence, so I am confident of victory. 3:15 Doncaster – Sky Bet Chase There is a very competitive look to this and several can be fancied. The Druid’s Nephew ran very well last time out and the form has been franked with the third and fourth going on to finish first and second in the Welsh National. He has some good form to his name as a novice including finishing a close second to Hadrian’s Approach at Ascot with Rolling Aces back in third. A handicap mark of just 135 looks good and he should be competitive in this, so looks a good each-way option. I am going to take a chance of ACCORDING TO TREV though who looks well handicapped off a mark of 133. At the start of the season he really impressed with two wins at Southwell and as well as having now had five runs over fences, he has experience in points, so should be up to this challenge. He usually jumps well and as a novice hurdler he was rated ten pounds higher than his mark in this. I still believe he will prove to be a better chaser than hurdler, so has to be of interest here. It is also good to see Ryan Hatch on board as he takes off a useful seven pounds and has already ridden him to victory over fences. The ground is a bit of an unknown, but at odds of 20/1 I am prepared to take the chance.

  3. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread taken from racing post: Cue Card almost certain to go for Gold Cup COLIN TIZZARD on Monday night gave the strongest indication yet that Cue Card will go for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup in March rather than attempting a repeat success in the Ryanair Chase. The trainer has been reluctant to pinpoint which race his stable star would line up in but declared that the eight-year-old, runner-up in the King George on Boxing Day, was "85 per cent likely" to step up in trip and tackle the Gold Cup. Cue Card is currently a best-priced 8-1 behind Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti for the big prize in two month's time, but is as short as 2-1 favourite for the Ryanair Chase over more than five furlongs shorter. Tizzard said: "The ultimate aim for anyone owning a jumper has to be to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and, all things being equal, it's 85 per cent likely that's the way we'll go as things stand."

  4. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday January 11th 2:15 Wetherby – Download The New Racing UK iPad App Handicap Chase Richard Lee is in great form at present and he can have another success with GREY GOLD, who handles testing ground really well. He was a useful novice last season, winning twice, including beating Mikael d’Haguenet on heavy ground at Punchestown. He also ran well on his last run at Ascot, finishing third to Lancetto at Ascot and he should be spot on for this. The trip is fine and a handicap mark of just 138 has given him a good opportunity in this race. 2:40 Kempton – Lanzarote Hurdle RIVER MAIGUE really impressed on heavy ground at Kempton as a novice and under similar conditions, he is expected to run well. On his first start of the season he stayed on well over two miles at Sandown and this step up in trip should really suit (he was a winner over three miles in points). He looks to be on a fair mark and having improved for his first run of the season, can prove a big threat to the favourite in this. He loves a fast pace, which he looks set to get in this valuable handicap hurdle and with his trainer, Nicky Henderson, in such good form at present, a big run is expected. 3:35 Warwick – Betfred Classic Chase VESPER BELL is an out and out stayer and excels in heavy ground. Conditions should be spot on for him in this and it is easy to see him running very well. Willie Mullins is sending more horses over to Britain than usual and he has been rewarded with some good performances and hopes are high that he will achieve another win here. He has only run six times over fences and twelve times in total, so there is every chance that he could improve this season and being just eight, he is approaching the peak of his powers. He has already proved he stays well, when finishing a close second at Punchestown in April and I can see this race being run to suit, so I am hopeful of a big run from him.

  5. Re: National Hunt Racing - Saturday December 28th 1:20 Leopardstown – Ballymaloe County Relish Beginners Chase He has been entered a few times, but hopefully he will be given his chance to run this time as DJAKADAM is an exciting prospect for fences. He was a decent hurdler, but it is clear from how he jumped hurdles that he will be much better over fences. The opposition is fair, but the main danger is also trained by Willie Mullins (Blood Cotil), so it is unlikely that both will run. If he is given his chance, I will definitely be backing him as he is one of the horses that I am most looking forward to going over fences. 1:50 Leopardstown – woodiesdiy.com Christmas Hurdle This race should see the return of the reigning staying hurdle champion Solwhit, but he will have his work cut out to beat ANNIE POWER. Unbeaten in eight starts, she looks a superstar in the making and will be very hard to beat. Her win last time was top class as Zarakandar had the run of the race. I don’t think she jumps quick enough to beat the best at the minimum trip, but over three miles, she could be top class. She stayed on strongly at Ascot, so this step up in trip makes sense and I confidently expect her to win, especially as she receives seven pounds from Solwhit. 2:35 Chepstow – Coral Welsh National This looks set to be a serious test of stamina as the ground is currently heavy and one horse that conditions should suit just fine is WELL REFRESHED. He excels in testing conditions and was most progressive last season, winning three in a row, including two races at distances of three and a half miles or more, which is hard to do. He looked very good when winning the Betfred National trial at Haydock and made a pleasing return to action at Sandown recently, finishing a close third on ground faster than ideal. He can be expected to come on for that run and is well in at the weights as the handicapper would give him another two pounds if he was weighted off his current mark. The Gary Moore team is also in good form at present, so there is a lot going for him. At bigger odds, Knock A Hand is worthy of each-way support. He was a decent hurdler, winning both starts at Chepstow and although he has run just four times over fences under rules, he has plenty of experience from point-to-points. He did not take to fences straight away under rules, but has come back this season and run two good races, including making all on heavy ground to win last time at Carlisle. He is well handicapped for this race and odds of 25/1 look too big. 3:00 Leopardstown – Lexus Chase There are many questions to answer in this with the first three in the market all having disappointed last time out. There could be a shock on the cards and I am prepared to take on Bobs Worth, Sir Des Champs and First Lieutenant. The one that I will take a chance on is RUBI BALL. He was a seriously good chaser in his day in France and is still only eight years old. He has now joined the powerful Willie Mullins team and although he was just denied on his debut (over hurdles), he may show much better form now switched to fences. If anyone can get him back on track, then Willie Mullins can and at 12/1, I would prefer backing him, than any of the favourites, as at his peak he is rated right up with them.

  6. Re: National Hunt Racing > Friday December 27th 1:20 Leopardstown – Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase Arvika Ligeonniere has looked very good this season and is a hot favourite to win. He has two major obstacles in his way though. Firstly, he is much better going right-handed and secondly he has to take on SIZING EUROPE. The winner of the 2011 Champion Chase may be eleven, but he remains a seriously good horse and ran a big race behind Sprinter Sacre at Punchestown last April. He ran a fair race to win on his seasonal debut at Gowran Park, but then failed to stay again at Down Royal when tacking three miles. Two miles is his trip and on this track, he is the one to beat. The main danger may turn out to be Twinlight who has really impressed me this season. He is improving rapidly, will like the ground and looks set to run a big race, so looks a good each-way alternative.

  7. Re: National Hunt Racing > Boxing Day 12:50 Kempton – William Hill – In The App Store Novices’ Hurdle DUBAI PRINCE was very classy on the flat (rated 116 at his peak) and really impressed on his debut over hurdles at Leicester. He jumped and travelled very well that day and has clearly taken to hurdles. A horse of that quality from the flat that takes to hurdles should not be opposed lightly and he is one to follow for the rest of the season and I certainly expect him to win this. 2:00 Kempton – Kauto Star Novices’ Chase JUST A PAR jumped really well on his chase debut, but needed the run. He showed the benefit of that run on his next start when easily beating Third Intention at Newbury. He again jumped well and he looks a staying chaser of some potential. He will be seven pounds worse off with Third Intention in this, but I expect the result to be the same. 2:35 Kempton – williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle This is one of my favourite races of the year and this year we are in for a fascinating clash between the two up and coming stars of British hurdling. The New One has looked awesome this season, easily beating two of the top hurdlers in the country in Rock on Ruby and Zarkandar. He is a class act and will obviously be hard to beat, but I feel this could turn out to be a tactical battle and Sam Twiston-Davies has already admitted how scared he was before winning last time out, so a tactical battle against A.P.McCoy is a concern. It is also a concern that he is out so soon after that run at Cheltenham, as even though he won well, he did have to battle against Zarkandar, who is a fighter and it is worth remembering that he met with his first defeat over hurdles when running just two weeks after his last run. MY TENT OR YOURS travels and jumps well and will be a serious test for the favourite. This track should really play to his strengths and I can see McCoy winning the tactical battle and kicking for home at exactly the right time. It could be close, but I think My Tent Or Yours is the most likely winner. 2:55 Leopardstown – Racing Post Novice Chase CHAMPAGNE FEVER really impressed on his chase debut and should be hard to beat. He was a classy hurdler and has always shown a great attitude. He has Grade One winning form at Leopardstown and handles testing ground well. Willie Mullins has always stated that he is expected to do better over fences than over hurdles, so he should be up to this test. I am interested in Road To Riches for the forecast. I believe he has a lot of pace and jumped superbly last time out. He will also love the testing conditions and I can see him going from the front and getting most of his opponents in trouble. His trainer, Noel Meade is in excellent form at present and it would not surprise me if Road To Riches was to go close. He looks the one for betting without the favourite and the straight forecast of Champagne Fever to win and Road To Riches to come second could pay a decent price. 3:10 Kempton – William Hill King George VI Chase There may be only nine horses declared, but this looks a cracking renewal of the race. Cue Card has been a warm order since his impressive win at Haydock. He is a hugely talented horse and I can see why he is favourite, but I am keen to take him on. Firstly, I think he is slightly better going left-handed, secondly, he had a bad experience in this race last year, thirdly, his yard is out of form and finally, he had the run of the race at Haydock and I can see him being taken on in this, so at odds of 3/1, he looks poor value. Dynaste is the second favourite and again I am keen to take him on. He is a second season chaser and they have a poor record in this. I am also concerned that he may not see the race out, as I expect there to be a good pace and he may fade close home. The one I am keen on is SILVINIACO CONTI. He is very classy and usually jumps really well. I feel this race will be run to suit and can see him travelling strongly just off the pace and making his stamina tell by kicking for home some way out. He travelled supremely well behind Cue Card last time out, but needed the run, blowing up, before running on again. He also ran wide at Haydock, so covered more ground than his opponent, so can be fancied to finish much closer here and I expect him to beat Cue Card.

  8. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday December 21st 2:25 Ascot – Wessex Youth Trust Long Walk Hurdle There may only be five runners but this could develop into a fascinating race. At Fishers Cross is the hot favourite, but I want to take him on. I feel he was beaten before his late mistake last time and is poor value in this. I feel that Reve De Sivola is the one to beat. He was very impressive in this race last year and has done well since. The ground has come in his favour and he will give the favourite a serious race. At bigger odds, however, I am going to take a chance with SALUBRIOUS. He is a fast improving hurdler; that stays three miles well. He was impressive in winning at the Cheltenham Festival and was cruelly denied over three miles at Cheltenham on his seasonal debut. Last season he finished six lengths behind At Fishers Cross at Newbury but is now seven pounds better off and has a good chance. His odds of 8/1 make some appeal and I can see him running a big race. 3:15 Haydock – One Stop Energy Race Day Handicap Hurdle SAUSALITO SUNRISE won easily last time out at Chepstow and is fancied to follow up here. The ground and trip will be fine and the Hobbs team has been in good form throughout December. He has gone up in the weights for his recent win, but he is progressive and the confidence he will have gained from his first win, should result in him still being very competitive off his new handicap mark. He is quite highly thought off by the yard, so a mark of 129 is not too high for a horse that is capable of going on to bigger things in the future. 3:35 Ascot – The Ladbroke Hurdle This looks very competitive, but I will have to go for ROLLING STAR as he could be a class above the opposition. He made a big impression on his British debut, winning well at Cheltenham and Nicky Henderson has said that he has improved more than any other horse in his yard during the summer, which is some statement. He looked good when winning on his seasonal debut at Haydock and although he has gone up in the handicap, he could be capable of defying his new mark and develop into an outsider for the Champion Hurdle.

Moore is looking to the skies and rain ahead of Chris Pea Green's bid to win the Ladbroke Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday. The four-year-old, who was seventh to Our Conor in last season's Triumph Hurdle, has not got his head in front so far this term but has run well in defeat on both his starts. Second to Pine Creek over this course and distance on his reappearance in early November, he was third to Ifbutandwhynot in the Gerry Feilden Hurdle at Newbury nearly four weeks later."He's in good order and any more rain would be helpful," said Moore. "He's not very well-handicapped, but he's a nice horse and in fine shape." The Ladbroke is one of the most competitive handicap hurdles of the season and a field of 21 will go to post. Paul Nicholls has withdrawn Greatwood runner-up Sametegal and will be represented by top weight Ptit Zig and Irish Saint. Ptit Zig owes his position at the top of the handicap to a Grade 1 victory in France last month but Nicholls has warned punters not to overlook Irish Saint. He was regarded as one of the better novices in the yard last season and could be good each-way value. Dell Arca has been raised 8lbs for his victory in the Greatwood Hurdle and will be ridden by Tom Scudamore. That was his first race in this country and he certainly looks the pick of David Pipe’s six-strong entry. Swing Bowler may be the best of the others if she can be produced in the same kind of form that saw her finish third in the Betfair Hurdle behind My Tent Or Yours. Riding plans are yet to be finalised for his other runners. Gordon Elliott won this valuable prize last season with Cause Of Causes and is optimistic of a bold showing from Flaxen Flare. The gelding won the Fred Winter Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March and shaped well when fourth in the Greatwood. He now enjoys a healthy pull in the weights with the winner and will be ridden by Richard Johnson. The only other Irish challenger is City Slicker, the mount of Tony McCoy. The JP McManus owned gelding is seeking a hat-trick but this represents a steep rise in class. Nicky Henderson is doubly represented with Rolling Star and Chatterbox. Barry Geraghty has elected to ride Haydock winner Rolling Star with David Bass aboard Chatterbox. The best backed horse in the ante-post market is Brian Ellison’s Totalize who has contracted from 25-1 to as short as 8-1 in places. The son of Authorized has been kept fit on the level through the summer including a victory at Pontefract.
  10. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Quiet period beckons for King yard after poor runs alan king who has had only one runner since the middle of last week, has revealed that a mystery malaise appears to be afflicting some horses in his yard. Writing in his column for the current edition of the Weekender, on sale now, King said that tests had failed to unearth the cause of several disappointing recent runs. "Although we have had a marvellous start to the season, I was relieved when Our Phylli Vera won at Plumpton on Monday as things could have gone better over the last couple of weeks. Several of our horses seem to have lost a bit of spark," King writes. "We have had one or two really disappoint when we were happy with them going into their races and we are struggling to put our finger on exactly what the problem is. "We have done some tests and, while one or two of the scopes have been unsatisfactory, on the whole they have been clear and none of the horses is coughing. "We have had a lot of runners in the past couple of months and have been fairly hard on them up to this point which may have taken the edge off them. We will work away quietly and have a few runners, but nothing like the normal numbers for this time of year." King has sent out 47 winners this season for a strike-rate of 21 per cent, but the yard's recent form have been less impressive. Our Phylli Vera was his first winner since December 3. King has three runners on Wednesday, two at Newbury - Midnight Prayer in the 12.40 and Fine Words in the 2.45 - and one at Ludlow, Midnight Cataria in the 3.00.

  11. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread taken from racing post: Cue Card team admit virus is an issue at yard THE Cue Card camp on Monday made clear their belief that bookmakers are right in making him the one to beat in next Thursday’s William Hill King George VI Chase – but trainer Colin Tizzard sounded a note of caution when he revealed his stable has struggled all season with a virus that has affected the performance of many of his horses. Tizzard confirmed son Joe will seek to repeat the front-running tactics that paid off with victory in last month’s Betfair Chase and stressed that last season’s Boxing Day defeat will not play on his mind as he approaches jumping’s winter classic. However, Tizzard – whose dual Cheltenham Festival winner is the sponsor’s 5-2 Kempton favourite – did admit the virus hitting his yard’s fortunes would be a factor in his pre-King George thinking and suggested Cue Card could have been suffering from the infection when third on his reappearance in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter. The seven-year-old had King George rivals Dynaste, Silviniaco Conti and Long Run back in second, third and fourth when posting a four-and-a-half-length success in a vintage running of the Haydock prize, but victory there represented one of only 15 by Tizzard-trained horses in a season in which they have managed just a nine per cent strike-rate. “We’ve had a bug, there’s no two ways about it,” said Tizzard. “I don’t want to make out it’s a big issue, but it is an issue. “Quite a few of the lesser horses haven’t been running up to scratch and some of them have been atrocious. When Masters Hill ran in the Badger Ales at Wincanton he hit one and then stopped like he’d been shot. “Third Intention has had it as well. We’ve had a low-grade virus and we’ll have it for the rest of the season. They all look lovely until you run them but then they don’t run so well. “Cue Card might have had it in the Haldon as he didn’t run quite so well that day. It’s not like a cold because there’s nothing visible. It makes the muscles twist and then when they run they tweak something. “I thought Cue Card jumped a bit tight at Exeter whereas he was the most beautiful, fluent horse at Haydock. We don’t want him coughing on Christmas Day and although we can’t stop it we’ll take every precaution.”

  12. Re: National Hunt Racing > Saturday December 14th 2:25 Cheltenham – Stewart Family Thank You Gold Cup This is traditionally a very competitive race and this year looks no different. SEW ON TARGET has run well on all four starts at Cheltenham, finishing in the first four on each occasion. He has looked better this season though and the form of his third place behind Johns Spirit was given a boost when he won the Paddy Power Gold Cup. He was beaten just 4 ½ lengths that day in receipt of two pounds, but is 16 pounds better off in this. He also ran a fine race on his last start over two miles at Cheltenham, but the two miles trip was too sharp for him and this step up in trip should really suit. It could also be significant that his last two runs have been on good ground and he will have those ground conditions again, so there is a lot in his favour. He is currently 20/1 and represents good each-way value. The main danger could prove to be Grandioso who has only run five times over fences, so is subject to improvement. I thought he ran a very promising race on his seasonal debut at Newbury, finishing third to Cantlow and should improve for the run. I know Paul Nicholls is bullish about his chances and usually when he publically states how much he fancies a horse’s chances they run well, so he is certainly worthy of interest also. 3:35 Cheltenham – Osborne House Relkeel Hurdle There may only be four runners, but this looks a fascinating contest with all four runners having chances. SALUBRIOUS is improving all the time over hurdles and made a pleasing return to action when just denied close home at Cheltenham’s open meeting. He was an easy winner at the festival also, so the course clearly suits him. He is a strong traveler and loves the hill, so I can see him running a big race. Gemix is the one I fear most. He is a very classy horse with form at the highest level. He is the one to beat, but ground conditions will be very different to what he is used to and this could be a tactical race, so he may not win.

  13. cracking race, Usually many horses that contested the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November run in this and 5 of the last 8 winners of this had made the frame in the Paddy Power Gold Cup on their previous start.
