  1. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

You are entitled to your opinion which is OK with me. In regards to Ajtebi , the owner has given him an opportunity to represent Dubai , which does not have a long history of thoroughbread racing. Everybody deserves an opportunity ,just like the all female card the other evening ,so have no problems with Ajtebi. I don't hold any grudges towards jockeys who have let me down when i've backed them , only the ones where they've applied the handbrake or been lazy , but i'll save that for one of Tabby's future threads.
I hardly bet on Flat racing so it isnt a grudge from that angle if thats what you are thinking. Ajtebi has had plenty of chances and he is shocking.
  2. Re: England > Non-league antepost > BlueSQ Bet Prem 2011-12 Funniest thing I read today was someone in the twitter section in the pullout saying that Jason Walker was the best striker in the BSP. Was surprised at how much they rubbished Newport's chances and I thought what they wrote was a bit harsh. Also considering they used a reason for opposing Fleetwood was how many points they finished behind Crawley and for them then to tip up a team who finished even further behind is a bit odd. Also Crawley arent there anymore so it should be more about how many points teams have to make on Luton.

  3. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

Hands up if you are happy that the best of British is represented by Jim Crowley and Hayley Turner once again. ps i have nothing against either of them.
Im sorry but Richard Hills is a long way from being one of the best jockeys areound. Id have both of them above him. Just because he rides for a big owner doesnt make him any good. Atjebi rides for a big owner but he is one of the worse pro jockeys I have ever seen. What are the chances Hills has to ride at Newmarket or Haydock anyway?
  4. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

There is absolutely no doubt that Richard Hills is one of the most decorated jockeys in the weighing room today. Whatever big races Hanagan ' date=' Turner and Crowley have won collectively wouldn't even amount to only a quarter of the top races Richard has won. He has maintained his job as first jockey to Britain's biggest individual owner for well over a decade , arguably the best job in racing for a jockey. Who can forget his win in the 1994 Gr1 QE2 on 2nd string Maroof at 66/1 and the following year again in the black cap he trumped on 2nd string Harayir in the 1000 Guineas. It was top class rides like them which got him the number 1 position which he still holds today.[/quote'] You must be about the only person I know who thinks Richard Hills is a good jockey. How many outside rides does he get? Very few is the answer He has only had just over 200 rides this year, that hardly screams a jockey in demand. Also he has been going a lot longer than the other three jockeys so to say he has won more bigger races than them is a bit misleading. What was the last big race he won?
  5. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

The trouble i have with Corny instead of just letting Hunty call the races (btw he used to be a copper) Lysaght will insist on shoving his oar in
But I expect thats what he is told do as the BBC seem to love getting someone else to butt into the commentary. Ian Bartlett must have wanted to have killed Willie Carson after the Queen Alexandra at the Royal meeting. It was funny for all the wrong reason.
  6. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

The overseas jockeys have between them won hundreds of big races and they are known the world over. Why do we have Hanegan ,Turner and former journeyman jump jockey J Crowley ? What big races have they won ? Don't include this years July Cup and dont cheat ! Best of British ? The opposition must be peeing themselves. Why have we not selected some top Gr1 pilots like Daryll Holland , Michael and Richard Hills ?
I thought you were talking about getting top jockeys in. Richard Hills is one of the worse around. I think having the current champion jockey is fair enough and I dont see too much wrong with having Hayley either. I get your point about Jim though although he is a decent jockey. To be honest I would have thought this would have been a good meeting for punters as there are only 10 runners a race, what difference does it make that its linked to the Shergar Cup? Also if you fancy a couple of jockeys rides you can back them to gain the most points which gives you an interest all afternoon. I remember the first one taking place at Goodwood and it was an utter disaster though. I think it might even have been based on owners rather than jockeys and no one turned up to it. Ascot have clearly made it into a big success. Also the concert afterwards is a load of 80s acts headlined by Jason Donavon so we arent talking massive stars here.
  7. Re: England > Non-league antepost > Evo-Stik Northern Prem 2011/12

We're all in the same boat here mate' date=' we started pre season brightly with victories over a mixture of first team/reserves of Tranmere and a decent win over FCUM, also a win over Airbus, were beaten against southport, beat 3-1 tonight against Stalybridge Celtic with a chester lad who i know personally quite well scoring against us. Seems we're trying players out of positions though and taking these games as a workout. Very hard to see how we're gonna start this season, can't see where we're going to get goals now WIlde is out for 2-3 months. :wall:wall:wall:wall[/quote'] Im rather keen on Stalybridge for the BSN so did you go to the game as Id be interested to hear how they are looking.
  8. Re: All Female Card Tomorrow! Your Thoughts! Im sort of neutral towards the Shergar Cup to be honest. I again think there is no harm in having something like this as a one off, quite a few other countries seem to have something like this. The one thing that I do have the problem with is that they seem to be struggling with getting the top jockeys now and that harms the competition. It seems pretty popular with the crowds as well so as something that happens once a year I can handle it.

  9. Re: All Female Card Tomorrow! Your Thoughts! Got to say there are some harsh opinions on here about Carlisle's meeting last night. Obviously betting is important in horse racing but it isnt everything and given the amount of racing on surely one less card for some of you to look at should be a positive. As a one off meeting that is also for charity I think its a good idea. Like I said before we already have female only races anyway so whats the difference from having six in one day?

  10. Re: All Female Card Tomorrow! Your Thoughts!

Hayley Turner was promoting this the other week and she's riding at Windsor?? Apart from that dont see whats wrong with it to be honest, theres enough average racing around on a monday, why not this?
She said she had never promised that she would be able to make it and Carlisle knew full well she might have to go to Windsor to ride for her normal yards.
  11. Re: England > Non-league antepost > BlueSQ Bet Prem 2011-12

Having given my top 5 earlier in this thread' date=' I'd argue that Mr Alger has got four out of five right, though in the wrong positions. Perhaps we all should be rethinking Alfreton Town after today's friendly...[/quote'] From what Ive read the team Wednesday put out are rather bad but even so that was some scoreline.
  12. Re: England > Non-league antepost > BlueSQ Bet Prem 2011-12 He is their PR man but I have seen him say he also does the odds for the Blue Square Leagues. Now Id imagine he might not be the only person doing the job and obviously he also has his bosses to think about so maybe he would love to offer bigger prices but isnt allowed. Also if you know you will still take money at a shorter price why bother offering a much bigger one than anyone else? For as long as you are in this league you will probably always be favs and you will also always get a fair few people wanting to back you. I agree with you though about odds compilers in general though as Id love some to have an opinion and back it up with the prices they offer. You do see it in the big horse races now although you wonder if part of that is just a PR exercise as well. I worked at a big betting company and it was almost impossible to get the compilers to offer anything because I think they were scared it would cost the company money and that would look badly on them. Its sadly the way bookies work in todays world. I must admit Id be tempted to back you at 5/1 but only because I reckon you could well be top after the first few games and you would be probably be a far bit shorter.

Well if he is their odds compiler then he should definitely have a lot more conviction in his predictions even if he has to cut a price quickly due to volume of bets when he has such conviction. Sadly I believe he's only their PR man and not their odds compiler though. It's not what I think we should be. If he thinks we're going to finish 5th then were he their odds compiler he shouldn't have Luton as favourites or he could afford not to if he was fully trusting of his prediction. I know how odds work and why we're only 7/2 so that they are not inundated with Luton in plenty of ew multiples but I just wish we lived in a world where odds compilers occasionally even if it's only for 30 minutes or whatever, stood by their predictions. As I say I'm pretty certain he's only their PR man so I could be doing the odds compilers as disservice as they could well believe we will win the league hence my original statement about Algar convincing them otherwise. For what it's worth if someone offered me 5/1 even on a win only bet on Luton I would happily take it.
  13. Re: England > Non-league antepost > BlueSQ Bet Prem 2011-12

If he thinks we're going to finish 5th perhaps he could convince his odds compilers of that so that those of us who are quietly confident he's totally wrong can get a price on Luton that comes somewhere close to being remotely value to win the league :hope
Well he would need to convince himself then as he is the odds compiler at Blue Square. The thing is Luton were backed with Blue Square last week so you arent going to get a drift anytime soon. What price do you think you should be then? Im surprised he stuck in 5th but I agree with what he wrote.
  14. Re: England > Non-league antepost > BlueSQ Bet Prem 2011-12 Blue Square's Alan Alger has done his annual prediction for where he thinks everyone is going to finish in the Non-League Paper today. Got to say I dont really disagree with him too much although I would have Gateshead higher than 18thas I think they could be the surprise package this year along with Cambridge. The teams hes got in the top 5 (York, Fleetwood, Darlo, Newport and Luton) looks pretty solid to me although I wouldnt have them in that order.

  15. Re: England > Non-league antepost > BlueSQ Bet Prem 2011-12 Good post Belly. I have backed you in the first game mainly because of the Wrexham situation as whats going on is not good and I, like Ships, think you could go well this year as well. I think the price is a decent one given whats going on. Darlo will draw to many away games for me but they are one of many in with a play-off chance. Im with you on Willmott but given he was 150/1 Im not going to knock Kev for having an interest but I would be amazed if he was top scorer. Im sure we all hope Wrexham survive but time is hardly on their side sadly.

  16. Re: Carling Cup preliminary round Ive just read the Racing Post preview to this game and I have to say Im pretty surprised they have gone with AFC to qualify as the bet. I just dont get there reasons behind it, one of them being Crawley's loss to Peterborough on Tuesday night but I hardly think that game could be used as a solid form guide. Im trying to remember what price Crawley were for the league game back in March but I do remember backing them on the handicap which could be a play tonight. Crawley outplayed AFC in both games last year and they have got stronger whilst AFC I think have got weaker.
