  1. Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A I'm not in Betfair so i can't check what you're looking at..........but on all the other sites - Life, Post, ATR - ir's a standard format on the 'horse pages' Under the horses name it will describe the horse by age, colour and sex eg on the Post........6-y-o (16Apr03 b g) the date is the 'foaling date', when it was born b relates to the colour = bay, gr = grey, br = brown, ch = chestnut and so on g is the sex = gelding abbreviations for sex are f = filly, a 2,3 or 4 year old female m = mare, a 5 year old or older female c = colt, a 2, 3 or 4 year old male h = horse, a five year old or older male g = gelding, any age male with it's bits removed.......... :ok

  2. Re: Best Bet of the Day - Sunday 15th November 2.55 Chelt - Mahonia - win Nicholls horses have been a bit in and out, some win, some have been disappointing. At least this one has a record of winning first time out which he did last season My main angle on this one though is the 'Nicholls wind op'..........we only usually find out after they've won with a vastly improved performance that a Nicholls horse has 'had the wind op' Well - this time we've found out before he runs, so might as well take a chance............

  3. Re: BBOTD Sat 14th Ling 2.00 - Mystic Touch - win Is the only one in the field with recent winning form, having won last time out at Wolves. That was a poor race as is this and he won with a bit of style for the grade, travelled well and made smooth headway to hit the front. Suggests there might be a bit more to come. Up 6lbs but I think the extra distance will suit

  5. Re: Southwell 12th Nov (AW) Not much joy on the speed figs front so far........ As a general point i don't think the Class 6 races are that good for any kind of ratings because they're so inconsistant at that level - I think you need to rely on flair rather than figures to pick out a winner in those handicaps and claimers/sellers I think I'll try and stick to class 5 and above..........only trouble is you get some days, particularly at Southwell, when it's nearly all class 6 races.........

  6. Re: Southwell 12th Nov (AW) Bit of a quickie on Southwell today as I'm busy......... Thought I'd check out my speed ratings and course form......... So, for the 3 races I've looked at here are my 'top rated' selections 12.20 - Mister Jingles 12.50 - Charlie Delta 3.50 - Onceuponatime None of those have much in the way of Southwell form, so I've also looked at which horse in each race is the top rated but 'with' form at Southwell - 12.20 Norcroft 12.50 Tri Chara 3.50 - Guto Let's see how they get on !

  7. Re: Best bet of the day 11th Nov Southwell 1.30 - Charging Indian - win I put this one up in the Meeting thread last time when it won at 9/1 and I'm sticking with him. There are a couple of former Listed class horses in this Claimer which adds a bit of spice but both of them are obviously in decline or they wouldn't be here. The selection seem to be on the upgrade. Finished down the field in a Kempton claimer which has thrown up a lot of winners, then stepped up in trip for a close up 5th at Newcastle and won here over 11 furlongs. The extra furlong today should see him improve again as he looks a real stayer. Was impressive last time, held up and finished like a steam train to spreadeagle the field.

  8. Re: Kempton 11th Nov (AW) (eve) 8.20 - Eagle Nebula This one takes a big step up in trip so it has to be taken on trust that he'll get it, the evidence is patchy. He's tried up to 12 furlongs before but then went back to 7 furlongs. Last 3 runs he's been over 9/10/11 furlongs and steps up to 2 miles today. If he gets the trip he should have a good chance as he's in decent form for the first time in his life with a win and a second in his last 2 races coming on the back of a break over the summer. I 'did' this race last night without any reference to a betting forecast and am a bit surprised that all 3 on my short list are pretty big odds Apart from the selection the other two are Croix Rouge and Cape Greko. Both of those 2 come out of the same race behind Silent Act over 12F here. It was a fast run race and they get good 'speed figs' for finishing 6th and 7th. I suspect that both of them were just dragged to a good speed fig by riding in the peloton so to speak and neither of them stood any chance of winning.

  9. Re: Rip Van Winkle & Fame & Glory Stay In Training, is this a step forward?? Only just noticed this........... Yeah, I think it's great news - I wish more top horses would stay i training But it's probably just 'economics' rather than a benevolent gesture for the good of racing. Tough times - i expect stud fees will be under pressure and Coolmore already have lots of established Stallions.........adding more to the roster would probably only make each one less valuable. I also wonder if they think their next year's 3 year olds might not be much kop, so they're keeping some better ones in training to try and win the big races...........

  10. Re: Southwell 11th Nov (AW) 4.00 - Swinbrook - EW Swinbrook's career runs over this CD have a record of 1271121 - and he was Favourite when he finished 7th ! He's probably handicapped up to his ability which is why he usually runs in Claimers & Sellers these days but he does have a 7lb claimer on board and has won 3 races in 2009 with claiming jockeys up. Ran quite well last time at 6F behind Titus gent at Wolves but found 5F on poly too sharp for him last vtime. Better suited to a slower 6 furlongs where he can make a run from behind.

  11. Re: Southwell 11th Nov (AW) 3.30 - Dart - EW The 'Life' forecast has her at 14/1 - I reckon anything in double figures would be a good EW bet on this one. Both her career wins have been on this track and she's now a pound lower than her last winning mark Has been well beaten in her last 4 runs, but they've all been in Class 4. Prior to that he was running well in Class 5 events and here she goes straight to Class 6 as topweight I like the angle that this is her second run back from a break and she won her second race back after her last long break.

For an EW shot I fancy Majehar - he's won here a couple of times, has been lightly raced this year but finished well to take 2nd in a similar race at Kempton last time. Might improve a bit for a return here where he usually gets placed. Win - Charging Indian EW - Majehar

  13. Re: Racing Post Wikipedia is pretty good........ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_National_Hunt_races That's the big Jumps races - click on any race and a seperate page opens with history of the race and all previous winners Right down at the bottom of the page are links to the equivalent pages for the Flat and for Ireland, France etc One thing I have noticed about the GB Jumps Races is that the links at the bottom to the Racing Post results page for each year don't work - at least it doesn't work for me, whereas the links from the Flat races pages do work.

  14. Re: Wolverhampton 9th Nov (AW) I think we had the last race sussed out between us.......:cow Shame about La Gifted - I was a bit dubious about her chances but I'd spent so long on the race that I felt I had to pick something or it would be a waste of time...........I think 'learning to leave alone' is a good habit to get into..........:unsure

  15. Re: Best bet of the day 9th Nov Wolv 4.40 - Spinning - win Spinning appears to be the only hold up horse in the race with plenty of front and prominent runners. He's a four times CD winner who's now on the same mark as his last win. Was a bit unlucky last time when he didn't get a clear run and that could be a danger if all the front runners are fading. But the race should be set up for him and he nearly always runs well here even in defeat Won this race last year. I like that as an angle because I think the trainers probably target races that they know the horse can win because he's already won it.

But the race should be set up for him and he nearly always runs well here even in defeat I've been looking at big price winners on the AW in the last few days to see if I could discern any pattern and although it's early days yet, Ansell's Pride fits the profile. He appears to have no chance but he's plummeted down the weights, down another 5 lbs since his last run, he's got a good AW record (5 runs, 1 win, 3 seconds), he's with a decent trainer, B Smart, he's had 5 weeks off the track for the trainer to get to work on him. Although he was well beaten last time it was a fast run race and he in the lead till 2 out. Spinning - Win Ansells Pride - EW

  17. Re: Wolverhampton 9th Nov (AW) 4.10 La Gifted I think La Gifted probably has a good chance of making the 4 timer but she's bound to be short odds and only won narrowly last time. All her recent wins have been in pretty slow run races and she might get the same again with no great pace in this field. Mick Channon is a dab hand with improving fillies and he appears to have one here, albeit at a low level. Triple CD winner and this race looks no harder than the ones she's won lately A slow run race might also suit Stanley Goodspeed at bigger odds. He hasn't won for 3 years but has plummeted down the weights as a result and has run some decent races lately off his current mark. In particular he ran well here a couple of runs ago when narrowly beaten into second, held up and running on at the finish to get second. Somebody must think he's going to win soon because he often goes off at short odds for a horse that hasn't won for 3 years. La Gifted - Win Stanley Goodspeed - EW

  18. Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A

That is soooooo subjective though. Going by your calculations would rely on every race being the same distance, which we all know is not the case....?!
I thought of that !.......... I convert all races times to 8 furlong equivalents so the speed figs are all 'per mile' So.....a 16 furlong race that was 4 seconds 'slow' would count as 2 seconds 'slow' per mile a 5 furlong race that was 1 second 'slow'would convert to 1 second, divide by 5, times 8 = 1.6 seconds slow per mile It is subjective a bit though..........but I don't mind that. Racing ain't an exact science, .............:lol
  19. Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A

Why would that ever be necessary information to know princecapri....? A length is an 'old school' measurement for the length of a horse. Similar to measuring a horse in 'hands'... It has no reflection on anything to do with racing to be honest...
I use it to work out speed ratings on the AW.......:unsure Well.......approximations. I reckon 1 length = 9/10 feet or 3 yards approx 1 furlong = 66 lengths approx 1 furlong takes about 12 seconds approx therefore 1 second = 6 lengths approx 1 length = 3 lbs approx therefore 1 second = 18 lbs approx therefore 1 second slower than 'standard time' = 18 lbs below your standard horse which on the AW I reckon is 96 rated.......so 1 second slow would be a rating of 78, 2 seconds slow would be 60, 1 second 'fast' would be 112 and so on...........
  20. Re: THE BREEDERS CUP - Fri 6th & Sat 7th November Crikey........... After watching all yesterday and all today up to the last race on RUK I've just switched over to ATR and see Sean, Matt, Jase........... On RUK we've had hours of US drivel about little kids with cancer who grew up to win a Breeders Cup World Championship and little orphan horses found on stoops in Chicago who go on to be 'World Champion'.......every jockey apparently has a nephew who's been kidnapped by Colombian gangsters and they all want to win for 'little Erwin'............ If you think BBC is atrocious when it comes to the Grand National, you wanna watch theis tripe Geez, ..........I hope I remember to watch ATR next year
