Rio's Racing Diary

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Captain Midnight was third again & was backed again but 5l's behind the winner & that's enough for me to turf him off the list. Two for Two runs today, more on that in a second. W/R 0-4 Stakes 4 return 0 P/L -4 Going to Thirsk today. I'll have a look at the 2yo's in the first to see if there'a anything that takes the eye, the three that have run didn't pull up any trees so I'd probably be looking at the others. The first bet today though is in the Palace House at Newmarket. I like Sole Power, he usually gives his running & he has his ideal conditions today of fast ground & 5f. He's drawn bang in the middle but he comes late anyway so the excellent Johnny Murtagh can pick which side he wants to challenge on. You need a bit of luck in these type of races but he ran well in March at Meydan & if he runs to his best he must go close here. The 2.45 at Thirsk looks an interesting race with Ice Pie possibly chucked in having won a Lingfield maiden on her only start, where three of those behind her have won since, skinny price though, especially with Lilac Lace on a four timer, I was looking at Sareeah who was with Clive Brittain & is now with David O'Meara but I think I'd like to see her first. The turn out for the Jockey Club stakes at Newmarket is a disgrace, a Group 2 with nearly £57k for the winner & there are four runners, the last here will get over £5k & the first owner or trainer that bleats about the level of prize money in the UK should be put up against a wall & shot. If I had to pick one for the Guineas it would be Toronado, he's shown he's trained on, is a C&D winner with top form & is too short to back. Back to Thirsk & Mont Ras who made all two days ago at Redcar runs under a 6lb penalty in the 4.00. David Bergin takes over on top & can claim 5lb of the pen back & if he can get to the front he could take a bit of pegging back. However he's drawn very wide in 14 & he'd have to go hard at it to get across before the bend out of the back which comes up pretty quick here. I'm going to take him on with Imperial Djay who's a dual C&D winner, is very well handicapped & who ought to be spot on now after three runs, he's down in class & the yard is in better form now too. Two for Two runs in the Thirsk Hunt Cup. He's up 9lb for that Ripon win a week ago but looks an improving sort, he's drawn wide as well but doesn't need the lead & he has an extra furlong to get a position, Silvestre de Sousa takes over on board. Despite what I said about Excel Bolt last week I'm giving him one last go in the last race. He is well handicapped, he did run well for a long way at Doncaster, he's got his ground & there aren't many easier 5f's than Thirsk's. Bets. Sole Power 40pts @ 9/2 Stan James. Imperial Djay 30pts @ 13/2 Coral. Two for Two 30pts @ 6/1 Betfred. Excel Bolt 10pts ew @ 16/1 Betvictor. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Not a bad day yesterday, could have been a bit better though. Nothing really took the eye in the opening 2yo maiden, rather the opposite in that both Mowgli & myself thought that the well backed filly Champagne Babe was a bit on the small side. She made most & won well with the field strung out like washing behind her. I then watched Sole Power win the Palace House on the big screen behind the stand which I was a bit close to & for a long way I was looking at the wrong one:unsure Anyway I was happy with that until back at home later on when I found out that Pearl Secret had been taken out very late & I had a rule 4, at least it was the correct deduction but I have no idea why he was taken out. The second race at Thirsk was, as I thought it might be really interesting. Ice Pie was really green & looked to be going nowhere, we were down by the half furlong pole when suddenly the penny dropped & she made up around 3l's in the last 100 yards to get beat a nose & a neck. We were round by the parade ring before the next & had a word with Tom Dascombe, he was really disappointed, he wanted her to win well so she'd get in a good race (Ascot?) but now he'll have to think again, he actually said "She's good but thick" She must have learned a lot from that though & I'll be interested to see where she heads next. Nothing from the maiden up next. Mont Ras managed to get away quite well & was up near the lead in the 4.00 but faded out of it in the last 2f, I suspect that came too soon after Redcar. Imperial Djay never looked like getting involved. Mowgli Thought about backing Yair Hill at around 10/1 but didn't. We were down by the rail again & he was taking pictures as they flashed past "What won that"? he says, cue the long face when I tell him it's Yair Hill. Two for Two was backed into 7/2. He was a in a decent position coming to the turn out of the back & then got murdered & shuffled right back. The stewards had a look & it was one of those "This interfered with that, that then interfered with another, that then interfered with mine" He flew in the straight & was third beaten less than 2.5l's & he must have lost twice that in the barging match. It happens, he can win again off that mark & stays on the list. Looking at the 3yo+ maiden we both thought that Renew, who was with Aidan O'Brien last year & is now at Marco Botti's looked alright. Did we back it? Nope. Did he win? Four & a half lengths pulling a bus, more long faces. I must not back Excel Bolt again:spank Up with the pace till a furlong out & faded, his breathing's gone, get it in your head man. 120pts staked returns 193pts after the 15p rule 4. Re: Rio's Racing Diary On to today where I have two running from the noted list & two I fancy at Newmarket. First up is Suegioo in the opener at HQ. He ran some good races in maidens last year & won at Lingfield by half the track in November. He made his return at Thirsk two weeks ago & ran a blinder to come fourth in a blanket finish there. Should have come on for that, most of the fancied ones are making their return. He has run well at the Newmarket tracks & on fast ground & is a decent price in this. Up to Hamilton for the 3.20. Polski Max steps up a bit in class here but won very well FTO at Ponty last Month. He was quickly away & made most over 6f that day & the drop back to 5f here should be no problem. He's best with some juice in the ground & it's on the soft side up in Scotland. Given a bit of progress from that first run he should be thereabouts, stables going well & has a fair record at the track. In the 1000 Guineas the favourite Hot Snap could be anything but I'm taking her on with the French raider What a Name. She has some smart 2yo form, the pick of which would be her second to the colt Olympic Glory in the Grand Criterium at Longchamp last October. That was on heavy & she's looked quite impressive on faster ground, albeit not as fast as today, she's trained on having won the Prix Imprudence, which is usually a good trial last Month. She's two boxes away from Hot Snap & I'm expecting Lemaire to be tracking her & trying to pounce late with her good turn of foot. I wish they'd move the Pretty Polly up the card & on to C4 because it's always a good race & is again today. Cruck Realta sets the form standard having run to a fair level but there are a few unexposed types that could progress past her her. One is Magic of Reality who was well fancied on her debut at Newbury a couple of weeks back but was a bit disappointing in just sixth, she should come on for that but suddenly the Cecil horses aren't running as well & she's a skinny price. Lady Nouf is another who should improve for a first run this season but might prefer slower ground. The interesting one for me is Vanity Rules. She ran very well here on fast ground over a mile last September & looks the sort to improve as a 3yo. The step up to 10f should suit, the yards starting to pick up after a slowish start & she can take this before going on to better things. Bets. Suegioo 20pts @ 11/1 Stan James. Polski Max 30pts @ 13/2 Betfred. What a Name 35pts @ 5/1 Ladbrokes. Vanity Rules 35pts @ 5/1 Bet365. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Another decent day yesterday but still a bit frustrating. Suegioo ran well again to finish second & he's starting to look like one of those that's going to keep getting placed & going up the handicap without winning. He doesn't look straightforward either, not ungenuine just not easy, I'll keep him on the list & watch what the handicapper does & it also wouldn't surprise me to see the cheekpieces turn into blinkers in the not too distant. Polski Max was well backed into 7/2 & won quite nicely up at Hamilton in the end. He's clearly going the right way but he needs to get his toe in. Again I'll see what the handicapper thinks because that was a decent little race & see where he heads next. Noted horses W/R 1-7 Stakes 7 return 7.5 P/L +0.5 What a Name ran ok in the 1000 Guineas, she just couldn't quicken when I thought she might & plugged on for 7th about 4.5l's back. The frustration here was Sky Lantern winning, I'd backed her for the Nell Gwyn & was a little disappointed with her there. While I thought Hot Snap might get beat I didn't expect Sky Lantern to turn the form round that well but then like I said there's something not right at Warren Place at the moment & that surely wasn't Hot Snap's running because Queally was at her a long way out. The one that had me pulling my Hair out was Vanity Rules which I really fancied & had put up as BBOTD. She was well backed into 100/30 & broke well but Buick was also shoving away a long way out, she was wandering around, got hampered but was going backwards at the time & trailed in well behind. The stewards noted that the saddle had slipped on Cruck Realta & also asked Ed Dunlop about the running of the 12/1 shot Concise, not a bloody peep about the well backed jolly though. 120pts returns 225pts. W/R 14/78 Stakes 2260.5pts Returns 1824pts P/L -436.5pts Ante post 136pts Ante post return -136pts I've decided to take my self off to Beverley today, not a bad card & the sun is out, at the moment anyway. I'll have a look at the 2yo's in the first, I was there last year & the useful Indian Jade won the race so there may be something to note. 2.55 On fast ground here over 5f the place to be is the far rail (low) & you need one that breaks well & likes to be up there. The one that fits the bill is Ayasha. She's in stall 2, likes to be up there & made a decent return at Ripon 18 days ago. She's done all her racing so far at 6f but at this stiff 5f I'm expecting Tom Eaves to bounce her out, grab the rail & make the running. 3.25 Saint Thomas goes well here which is always a bonus & ran a fine race when just held at this distance off 2lb less 11 days ago, he shouldn't be far away again but I'll take him on with Tartan Gigha. This is another with course form & ran quite well over 12f on his seasonal return here also 11 days ago. That should have him spot on now & he's very well handicapped off 74 having once been rated in the 100's & he's 4lb lower than his last win at Carlise last June. He goes on the ground & Raul de Silva takes off another 3lb. The 4.00 is a nice race but Toto Skyllachy who won this last year is not that well handicapped at the moment. Shadowtime is a course specialist but is also a bit high in the ratings. Al Muheer is another with form here & is on a fair mark but was stone last on his return at Ponty two weeks ago. I was looking at Seattle Drive who's well in on his old form & ran ok at Newcastle last time & should like the step back up in trip. I'm just worried the ground's too fast for him though because he seems better with cut. I'll just sit this one out I think. 4.30 I've got this between Ofcoursewecan & Lion Beacon. Ofcoursewecan won here over 10.5f last time & should stay the extra 1.5f off 3lb higher, stables going well here (6 from 10) unless I back them. Amanda perrett's sent Lion Beacon a long way from West Sussex on his own (1 from 3 here last 5 seasons) & he ran very well in third to the progressive Spillway at Kempton LTO. He ought to like this 12f's but he's not run on turf yet. Another to watch I think. The 5.00 looks impossible, I did have Clock on Tom on my list last year & he's running well without winning but 3/1, no thanks. Eeny Mac runs in the last. I noted him looking tubby when third to Thrust Control in a seller here FTO & that should have brought him on for this. He goes well here, is back to a pound above his last winning mark, goes on the ground & has a decent draw in 4. There's another from my list running today, Disclaimer is in the 4.20 at Kempton. He's up 11lb for the win at Doncaster & he's not run on the aw before, add to that I'm wary of Cecil's at the moment & he's easy to leave alone at 5/2 & shorter. Bets. Ayasha 25pts @ 7/1 Hills. Tartan Gigha 32pts @ 11/2 Stan James. Eeny Mac 35pts @ 5/1 Coral, all BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A really glorious day yesterday, one of those that makes you glad to be out & about, which was a good job really because not much else did. I've never seen Beverley that busy, too busy really, it's not laid out for a crowd & it was hard work getting from the pre parade to the parade & then the stand. I fancied an ice cream, nice ice cream at Beverley, the queue was long though & seemed to get longer every time I passed. Looking at the 2yo's before the first I decided that James Tate's Zalzilah looked the pick of quite a nice bunch. A glance at the boards as I weaved through the ring showed him at 11/2. I managed to work my my way up the stand to the back & had a look at Betfair, he was around 7.0. Put the stake in &.......... Change my mind & exit. Broke well, made all, so far clear at the furlong pole that Neil Callan, looking round needed a telescope to see the rest, wins by 6l's easing down. I'm still trying to work out why I changed my mind. The idea is to stay positive when things go wrong & I was positive, positive it was going to be one of those days. Ayasha looked well in the parade ring but was on her toes, no problem sprinters are supposed to be a bit wound up. She must have been too wound up & the spring must have gone because she was stone last. Tartan Gigha was sporting bandages on his front legs, not keen on that, especially on fast ground. He plugged on for third behind the front two who ended up in that rare event these days a dead heat. Toto Skyllachy won the next in good style & if I didn't think he was that well handicapped before he certainly won't be after that. At least I didn't get involved with Seattle Drive who led but in the end beat one home. I popped in the betting shop to watch the unbacked Disclaimer win the Kempton race. Lion Beacon won the next, backed into 6/4. He gave the old boy stood next to me kittens though "What's he doing"? he was squealing as Paul Mulrennan sat & suffered on the rail up the straight, waiting for a gap which appeared very late & he got up close home. At this point I decided to bail out, I'd no interest in the next which was won by a 33/1 shot & I wasn't going to hang about for an hour for Eeny Mac & then try to get out of the car park. A last wistful look at the queue for the ice cream & out of the gate. Good decision, Eeny Mac was only 4th & is booted off the list. 92pts down on the day. W/R 14/81 Stakes 2352.5pts Returns 1824pts P/L -528.5pts Ante post 136pts Ante post return -136pts Expense running total £500 Noted horses W/R 1-8 Stakes 8 return 7.5 P/L -0.5 There are a couple from the list running this evening at Catterick & I did think I might go but have decided not to, I'm likely to fetch up at Ripon on Friday & probably Thirsk on Saturday, then next week I can go somewhere every day from Monday to Sunday which includes the three day Dante meeting at York so plenty to come. Tom's Anna runs in the 8.10 & looks to have a good bit to find. Mr Mo Jo has gone up 7lb & it looks a better race than the one he won over C&D a couple of weeks ago, at around 11/4 I can let him pass.
Re: Rio's Racing Diary A run up to Ripon this evening with Mowgli so I'm hoping the rain stays away. The first race is a seller & a bit of a shocker actually & I'm a little disappointed that there are only five runners in the 2yo event. The 6.55 is a decent race though. Our old mate Planetex is in here & has what looks like the plum draw on the stands rail, his form tailed off last backend though & he didn't show a lot FTO either but he needed a couple of runs last year. He is 8lb above the mark he won well off at Newcastle last year & looks to have a bit to prove to me & I'll leave him alone. Fast Shot is drawn next to Planetex & is down to a fair mark but he hasn't shown much in two runs this season either. The one who has shown a bit of form is Baldemar. He was just nabbed on the line over C&D last time with a couple of these behind & is drawn ok in 9. He's gone up 3lb to 74 but he's been in the 90's in the past & anywhere near some of his old form & he'd have to be thereabouts. If there is rain about he won't mind. The 7.30 is a good race too. Be Perfect was with Marco Botti & before that was trained in France where he had some fair form, ran well in a conditions race at the track when I was here for new trainer Dandy Nicholls the other week & should go well. Muffin McLeary has gone well here & is on a fair mark again but was nothing special on that same card here from two weeks back. Awake My Soul won a maiden at Beverley for O'Meara & has Danny Tudhope on top but this is a warm race for a first go handicapping. Snooky ran well FTO at Ponty & then won at Yarmouth, tries 10f for the first time here & I think he might be better at the mile. Next Edition won well in a fair race at Musselburgh a week ago & is due to go up 7lb from tomorrow. Runs here with a 5lb pen, ground should be fine & the stable is in form, he's the pick. There's not a lot of them in the last showing much recent form. Zaplamation won a nothing race at Redcar & got stuck up a harsh looking 10lb, he's run alright in two better races than this since & is back down a pound here, he ought to go well. I'm going with Dr Irv though, he ran quite well FTO at Catterick & is a pound lower this evening. He's only a 4yo so can progress a bit yet. He's from the same yard as Next Edition & also has Eva Moscrop taking off a useful 7lb. Bets. Baldemar 25pts @ 7/1 Betfred. Next Edition 30pts @ 6/1 Bet365. Dr Irv 40pts @ 9/2 Bet365, all BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Having stepped back & taken a deep breath I'd better round up Fridays events, there's no doubt this can be a frustrating game when things are not going your way but the way things panned out the other evening left me more than flat. So much so that I barely looked at the racing yesterday & couldn't even be bothered to watch C4 never mine go to Haydock or Thirsk which had been the idea in the week. I was with Mowgli again & it started off alright with a wander into Ripon for something to eat. It's a long time since I was in Ripon town square & like everywhere it's changed, shops shut, pubs gone etc. We went in the Hornblower & the grub was decent & a fair price, I'd go in again. The weather couldn't make it's mind up, going from sunny to rain & back again. Having let the first two races go my action started with the 6f handicap. I suspected that Mowgli would have backed Planetex & he had & he had a bit more at the 20/1 on track & I joined him with a small bet at that price. He also backed Baldemar with me & we retired to the stand to watch the race. Planetex was up there till just before a furlong out & dropped away tamely, he looked very well beforehand & what's up with him I don't know. Baldemar ran a shocker & was stone last. Mowgli had backed Awake My Soul in the next which won for him in good style, I was on Next Edition & what happened here had an effect on later events I think. Next Edition was trapped on the rail down the straight & couldn't get out, by the time the room appeared it was too late & he could only run on for third. Would he have won? I don't think so because the winner looked well in charge but he would have been a lot closer. & so to the last. Dr Irv was well backed, having got stuck on the rail before on Next Edition I think Eva Moscrop was told not to let it happen again. She had him third & moved off the rail round the bottom turn & then scooted round the field off the bend & in a matter of strides shot clear, here's what the form says.

Took strong hold in midfield, pulled way to front 5f out, soon ran wide on bend, ridden 6 to 7 lengths clear 3f out, rider looked behind and eased over 1f out, headed final 100yds, ridden again and rallied, should have won, rider fell off soon after line
It looked more than 6 to 7 lengths to me but at the time I didn't see what had actually happened & just thought she'd gone too soon. looking at it again she looks round & thinks she's won & tries to coast home but the horse pulls himself up when she drops her hands. It's annoying, I've been done out of a winner but it's a mistake, I've read others in the main thread saying she's done it on purpose to lose the race, rubbish, she's dropped a clanger, got 10 days for it & done serious harm to her riding career, at least in the short term & I actually feel sorry for her. What does piss me off is the Baldemar run. When I looked the evening before he was 11/2 or 6/1, on Friday he was 7/1 & at the track waas 8/1 & even 9's at one point. Never looked like getting involved, the stewards to be fair asked the question.
Barry McHugh, the rider of BALDEMAR, unplaced, reported that the gelding lost its action. The Stewards ordered BALDEMAR to be routine tested.
Well handicapped, handles the track having won there & ran very well there LTO, runs a shocker having drifted. No return from 95pts. I need a change of luck & with a busy week coming up, including the return of York, sooner rather than later would be nice. Re: Rio's Racing Diary The start of a busy week & an interesting card at Doncaster. The 3yo maiden that opens the card should be worth a watch with a view to future pointers. So should the 2yo maiden that follows, just five runners is a tad disappointing though. In the 3.50 I've decided to take on the O'Meara trained favourite Grandorio with Bartack. This one was a good second on his return this season to the progressive Lilac Lace & that one's won again since at Thirsk. He's yet to win but his 2yo form is fair, he's been gelded & looks the type to improve as a 3yo. Up 3lb for that second but Patrick Hills takes that off. Going with Luca Cumani & Patrick Hills again in the next & Zacynthus. He won a similar race to this at Haydock last season off 3lb less & looked an improver last year. Ran alright at Thirsk FTO when not beaten far which should have him spot on for this. Likes fast ground so I'm hoping it hasn't/won't rain too much before the race. Sheastar likes the track & is quite well handicapped but in two runs so far this season she hasn't shown a lot. The one that worries me is King of Jazz who I've backed before & he runs well without winning but one of these times he's going to get one fall in his lap. When the place market settles I'm looking at having a saver on this one. In the 5.00 Apache Glory is on a fourtimer having carried the winning aw form onto fast turf at Beverley. She didn't have a lot to spare that day & is up another 3lb here & 11lb from her first win in this sequence & it's got to end somewhere. Curly Come Home ran well in second at Leicester on her return & should go well off 4lb higher. I'll take Bobs Her Uncle in this. She was beaten a nose by Good Speech at Redcar FTO & that one's run well since. She looks an unexposed sort that should come on for that run, again it was fast ground lat time so no rain please. Bets. Bartack 40pts @ 9/2 Stan James. Zacynthus 35pts @ 5/1 Coral. Bobs Her Uncle 40pts @ 9/2 Stan James, all BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Had a message from Mowgli after yesterday, he's going to put me up for the crossbar challenge on soccer am, he's right with one of them but the other two were more fair effort, not far wide. However it was a better day than it could have been. For one thing I backed one of Hamdan's in the first & it won:eek Unless there was something from the unraced ones or that had not shown it's true form yet the race looked between Defendant & Matrooh. Defendant was playing up a bit in the pre parade & wasn't happy in the saddling boxes, in the ring proper he was on edge & making a right row. Matrooh on the other hand was taking it in his stride & looked well. A look on Betfair & Matrooh could be had at 3.9 so a bet was struck. On the boards the pair flip flopped & Matrooh ended up the jolly. Always in the first two he led at the 3f pole & kicked again just before the 1f & won quite nicely, he can win again. The 2yo race ended up with just three runners. Howz the Family was another playing up in the pre parade & then even worse in the main ring (pic below) He set Canyari off a bit as well but that one settled down when the handler took him away from Howz the Family. Legend Rising for Hannon & Hughes had opened at 6/5 but was backed into 8/11 & he was well behaved, however Canyari put him away by 5l's in the race but it's hard to know how strong that form is. The one off the crossbar for me was Bartack. He was well backed & despite looking green ran well under pressure down the centre of the track & had just seen off Grandorio who was on the rails when Derwent appeared between them with a strong run. Bartack fought back though & about half a furlong out put his head back in front but just as I was getting ready to cheer him home he faltered again & let Derwent get up by a head. I don't think Patrick Hills could have done any more & I can see Bartack turning out with some headgear on before long. I didn't get the place price on King of Jazz that I wanted & at the furlong pole that was looking like another balls up because he looked like he might actually win, but then just as quickly he folded up. The good news was the place price on Zacynthus was better than I thought it should have been & I got a bet matched. He just got third without looking like he'd win. At this point the strong headwind that had been blowing all day brought in a heavy shower & along with the rest of the sparse crowd I had to dive under the stand. I never got back out & watched on the TV as Bobs Her Uncle tried to kick for home from 3f's out but was always going to be swallowed up. They were kicking the ground up quite a bit by then & I think the rain the evening before & that heavy shower at the wrong time had got into the watered ground. No return from the 115pts staked then but it could have been worse. He ought to win but at 6/4ish I'm going to let him pass. I did look at Beverley today but have decided to keep the powder dry for the three day Dante meeting which starts tomorrow. Re: Rio's Racing Diary So I'm on my way back from Donny on Monday & on the radio their telling us that the jet stream is in the wrong place again & that we're in for another Summer like last year. I normally take these things with a pinch of salt but given that the last couple of days have been pretty foul & that pulling the curtains this morning here in West Yorkshire & it looks more like November out there there might be something in it. I noted last night that the berk of the course was saying they were expecting rain last night but that he wasn't sure how it would effect the going. Reading between the lines this is a case of CYA in that he'll have had the taps on after the two nice days last week & seeing as they've had 16mm overnight & more to come it's likely to be much softer than the good, good to soft in places reported this morning. On that basis I'm inclined to let the first race go to see what the state of the ground is & play it more by ear anyway. There are a couple that will go on any ground though that I've already backed. The first is York Glory in the 2.15 who goes on any ground & I'm thinking a double figure draw is needed so stall 11 is ok. He was actually stone last in this last year but that was his first run of the season & he's won at Ponty already this year. The other one is Mince in the Duke of York. She looked a filly going places last year finishing off with a fourtimer including a Listed win here & a Group3 at Ascot. She seems to go on any ground, she's also got box 11 & I'm hoping she'll be a force in all the big 6f Group races this year. If it doesn't get too bad underfoot I'll be looking at the bottom one Discovery Bay in the 1m 4f handicap. His flat turf form is nothing to get worked up about but he was useful for Charlie Swan on the aw, both in Ireland & over here in the Winter & did win twice & finish second over hurdles for new trainer Brian Ellison on his last three starts. If he could run up to his aw mark on turf he'd be well in. There's two off the list running today. The 2yo Peniaphobia is in a warm looking novice at 4.25 but his win was on fast ground & being by Dandy Man I don't think he'd want it soft. The other is Line of Reason who was just held at Doncaster & has since changed hands for 80,000gns & is now with Paul Midgley. His first three runs were on the aw & the Donny race was fast ground & he's by Kheleyf so again the ground worries me. With both of these I'll have to play it by ear. Arrow Barrow won yesterday at even money, chased the leaders & stayed on well to lead at the last. Bets. York Glory 30pts @ 7.4 Mince 38pts @ 5.8, both Betfair. Rio.

I know that losing runs are part of the game. I know that if I stick to my tried & tested methods I will emerge from the other side. What I'd really like to know is what the %&£$ is going on with our weather? Less than two weeks ago the sun finally came out & despite not having any punting joy at Beverley at least it was warm. By the time the last race on C4 had been run yesterday my feet were like blocks of ice, the rest of me wasn't far behind & I wanted to go home & that would have been a good idea actually. I have never seen York so quiet for a good meeting, more life in a tramps vest & the stupid prices coupled with the weather may finally be taking there toll. York Glory ran alright for fourth. Mince was up front for 3f's & then went backwards faster than the Italian army. I knew she had no chance before the off when she was over 9 on Betfair. What I don't know is how Roger Charlton could walk out of the parade ring with a big grin on his face after that. I backed Discovery Bay & he found plenty of bother & finished full of running beaten under 3l's. Mowgli had already backed Peniaphobia & so did I, We both thought he was going to get up but Steventon Star found a bit more & held him by a neck. Line of Reason was also backed but was another to find trouble, when going nowhere in this case though. I won't back that one again unless there's firm in the going description. Liber Nauticus won the Musidora but it didn't look like Oaks winning form to me. Having thawed out last evening I got stuck into today's fare. The ground wasn't that bad crossing the track at the 10f marker & just past the finish but there's more wet stuff forecast for today. I've four from the list running today, one of which I backed last night which is Ice Pie in the 8.05 at Newmarket. This is the filly of Tom Dascombe's that got going too late but still nearly got up at Thirsk 12 days ago. Talking to him afterwards he was disappointed & thinks a lot of her. She must have learnt a lot from that & the race tonight is a drop in class. The 4/1 at Bet365 looked a good price & she's only 11/4 now. Another I backed last night is the French raider Dalkala in the 2.15 at York. She has Group2 winning form & has a 2lb pen for that but this doesn't look the strongest Group2 here. Starscope has Group1 place form from last years 1000 Guineas & the Coronation but the conditions make the form a farce, especially the Newmarket race & she looks a balmpot anyway. Cubanita & Emirates Queen could progress but I'll take Dalala's solid form at this level along with the fact that Alain de Royer-Dupre doesn't send them over for a day out, other than Ascot anyway. Having backed her at 5/2 & expecting more rain to turn conditions even more in her favour I'm a bit miffed to see her at 11/4 for a spell this morning. The other three are all noted horses. Two for Two won well at Ripon & then met trouble on the sharp track at Thirsk. The wider track here should help & he won't mind the ground, up in class but I think he could be better than a handicapper in time. Polski Max has won twice for me now, looks like he'll have the ground on the soft side & if it does rain that not a problem. Because of the 5lb claimer on Smoothtalkinrascal last time he's actually 2lb better off with that one here & was 2.5l's in front of him. The filly Sound of Guns would be the worry but I think she might want it faster. In the last Hidden Justice is up 10lb for winning at Ponty pulling a bus but he looks like he could be a big improver as well, having won over hurdles twice & running a decent race in the Triumph since moving to John Quinn. If he continues to progress as I hope he will he could end up running in the Nothumberland plate & the like, he won't mind the ground either. Bets. Dalkala 60pts @ 5/2 Coral. Two fo Two 40pts @ 4/1 Bet365. Polski Max 35pts @ 5/1 Coral. Hidden Justice 40pts @ 9/2 Ladbrokes. Ice Pie 40pts @ 4/1 Bet365, all BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A ride on the rollercoaster again yesterday, things started off much better with it actually being warm when we arrived at the track. Things were were really looking up with both Mowgli & myself on Dalkala in the second race & with the sun out the mood was upbeat. I'd not had a bet in the Dante. Mowgli had Libertarian on his to follow list. I'd seen that one win a nothing race at Ponty & then run ok at Sandown, we both thought Trading Leather looked well & he backed that one, I'd decided I was just going with the bets I already had. Trading Leather was second behind the 33/1 winner Libertarian, ouch! We even had a laugh when it won the best turned out before the race which is usually the kiss of death. It doesn't take long for the rollercoaster to reach the top & send you screaming down the other side. No sooner had the runners started to come in for the next than the heavens opened & it was chucking it down. We got in the stand to watch Two for Two which we'd both backed finish fourth having had every chance. No way could we get to the parade ring before the sprint & we stayed inside, watched three come out of the race in about five minutes as the ground went from good to soft in about the same time. Polski Max went off at 5/4 on ground he should have loved & was fourth of five, 3l's behind a horse he'd beaten by 2.5l's LTO & he was 2lb better off. The form book is now hanging on a bit of string behind the toilet door. I think it was at this point that Mowgli informed me that Ice Pie was now around 6/4 for the Newmarket race & there were no non runners. the rain eased enough for us to go have a look at the 2yo's but no sooner had we decided that Richard Fahey's Parbold looked nice than we had to dash for cover again. He was around 100/30 but neither of us struck a bet & we watched as he won well enough despite been green. With no sign of it letting up we stayed inside to watch Hidden Justice go from looking like he was cruising at the 2f marker to going up & down on the spot in a matter of strides. They finished strung out like 3m chasers with appropriately enough the Jonjo O'Neill trained Well Sharp winning by 6l's in the JP Macmanus colours. No point in hanging round waiting for the rain to stop & we got wet crossing the track. I reckon we'd gone no more than two miles down the road when the sun was out, the roads were dry & it looked like not a drop had fallen. I'm beginning to think I'm like that cartoon character who everywhere he goes has that black cloud hanging above his head. I was even more convinced later when I watched Ice Pie run an absolute stinker having drifted a bit to 15/8, I must start getting my head round the lay side of Betfair:spank 215pts returns 210pts W/R 15/94 Stakes 2845.5pts Returns 2034pts P/L -811.5pts Ante post 136pts Ante post return -136pts Expense running total £580 We were undecided about today but the forecast says it's cloudy with no rain:hope so off we go again. I've had a bet in the first with one later at smaller stakes to usual but done the double, this would give me my usual returns if it came off but limits the exposure till I see what it's like ground wise. Beldale Memory won on good to soft in decent style at Bath & should go well for Clive Cox & Jamie Spencer. Later on Rye House looks one of those older Stoute horses that he usually does so well with & he's got soft ground form too. I'll give Spanish Duke one last chance in the 2.15. He's very well handicapped, goes with cut & while he didn't run well last time it was a fair run at Ponty FTO. The main hope today is another Frenchy. I was just about to back Top Trip for the Yorkshire Cup at 11/2 went the price went, this was Cavalryman being taken out & I had that as the danger if handling the ground which they obviously think he wouldn't have. A scratch around & I've taken the 4's which is a fair price for a horse with some smart form on this sort of ground in France & who should be spot on for the run last Month. Bets. Re: Rio's Racing Diary A much better day all round yesterday & but for the nod of a head it would have been a really good day. For a start off it was the best day weather wise of the three, not exactly a return to the recent Bank Holiday stuff but the sun was out & even with a stiff breeze it was pleasant enough. Beldale Memory was well backed in the first & never gave a moments worry, she cruised into the lead a furlong out & cleared away to score in good style. Royal Ascot & the Queen Mary next it would seem & if it had any soft in the going description she'd have to worth a look & she might be as good or better on faster anyway. I'll add her to the list. One coming off the list is Spanish Duke who ran another shocker & well handicapped or not he's in the bin for me. Sir John Hawkwood battled all the way to the line to win this under his 6lb pen & I was thinking afterwards that I probably ought to have had something on him. We were down by the rail just past the half furlong pole for the Yorkshire Cup & I'd put the camera down thinking that Top Trip was nowhere until they went past us & I realized I was looking at the wrong one & that he was actually closing down on the leader Glen's Diamond who'd been second in this last year but had done naff all since. Half a stride from the line & Top Trip's nose was in front, half a stride after the line & his nose was in front, on the line Glen's Diamond was a fag paper in front, done on the bob, bugger! Pavlosk was quite impressive for Stoute & Moore in the fillies Listed. I then watched Moviesta, who I'd had on the list last year & who'd beaten Line of Reason that had disappointed on the first day at the other week win the next. I wasn't too bothered though, I'm giving these sprint handicaps the swerve at the moment. I needed Rye House to do the business & land a Stoute/Moore treble & thankfully again there was not much doubt after he hit the front before the furlong pole. The further they went the better he was going & I can see this one winning a decent prize at 12f's & I'll add him to the list. A slight downer in that the three non runners when I backed him had turned into eight:eek by the off time, however most of them had been longshots & the rule4 totaled 15p which was fair enough. the 100pt stake returned 320.75pts after deductions W/R 18/99 Stakes 2945.5pts Returns 2354.75pts P/L -590.75pts Ante post 136pts Ante post return -136pts Expense running total £590 I had thought that I might take in Thirsk this afternoon but the card is not that great & the weather is even worse, it's only a small track & there's not a lot of shelter & I'll give it a miss. More cover at Doncaster where there is an evening meeting but again the card is nothing special, not a surprise because the Saturdays & Lawson (who?) are playing after racing & why bother having some decent racing on when you can get a crowd to pay twice (at least) the usual entrance money, swill gallons of overpriced gnats piss & watch some talentless totty & Lawson (who?) miming. I'll have a closer look at Ripon for Sunday a bit later but I suspect that rain will probably still be falling. Re: Rio's Racing Diary After a good look I have decided to go to Ripon today, the forecast is to stay dry & even though at this point I have only had one bet it's a real interesting card, especially for a Sunday. The opening 2yo maiden should be worth a look. I'd see the winner coming from one of the newcomers, probably Mr Carbonfootprint or searchlight but I'd like to have a lok at them first. I'm trying to avoid sprints but the 3.10 is a belting race with Dutch Rose, who I backed several times last year, Body and Soul who won thousands in the big sales races, Athenian I was on when last seen here & Hoodna from Godolphin all in a cracking field. I haven't had a bet but this is worth the trip to watch anyway. the 3.40 is another good race. I'm looking at Frontier Fighter but I'd like to see just how soft it is first. The bet is Amaze in the 4.10. He looked to be coming to the boil when a staying on third over a mile here two runs back. He then was unplaced at Chester last week when drawn out wide & I can always forgive that sort of run there. He's a C&D winner & likes a bit of cut, just 2lb higher than when winning a class 3 at Ayr in October & he should be spot on for a big run here. Bet. Amaze 40pts @ 9/2 Coral BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary I suppose I'd better do a round up of Sundays events, which I rather enjoyed despite the fact that it seems that with knocking on for 40 years worth of punting experience there are still days when I leave the brain cell at home. Things started off really well with the sun out when we arrived at the track. I'd stuck a decent coat on due to the weather forecast & I sometimes wonder if these forecasters just make it up, they seem it get it wrong more than they get it right to me. I'd had my lunch but Mowgli decided he was having something so I took advantage of the fact that there was no queue for ice cream, this turned out to be the only result that went my way all day. Having decided that the first race was between the unraced pair Searchlight & Mr Carbonfootprint the choice was clear, the latter was 5/2 with the other 5/4. The problem was that Mr C was having a right shout & bawl every time he got to the bit of the parade ring where they go out & just before Tony Hamilton got jocked up he had a bit of a buck & a kick. I decided to sit the race out. We watched from the rail about half a furlong out & both of us would have got a nice picture of Mr Carbonfootprint & Searchlight as they went past but for the bloke in the yellow safety vest wandering across the shot! Mr C won by three parts with a long looking 4.5l's to the third. I wasn't going to have a bet in the seller but the Fahey runner Jaga Time looked quite nice & had some form at least so a small bet was struck for the team to land a quick double, he was second. I now was telling myself to stick to the plan & I'm not betting in the next. Both Mowgli & myself had decided that Spinatrix looked the pick before hand but neither of us backed her, she won by a head having been available at 7/1. What was clear was that it was nowhere near soft ground & getting faster by the minute. This had me backing Frontier Fighter who looked well enough in the parade ring but not as nice as the lass leading him round, although she wouldn't want to be any skinnier. He ran alright to be third, beaten just over a length by Ardmay. Mowgli had backed two in the race split 75%/25% with the 25% on the winner at 18/1 & then had a belly ache about not having enough on! Back round for the parade for the next. If the lass leading round Frontier Fighter is a babe then God alone knows what the one with Amaze is? Mowgli seemed to think it was female, the last time I saw anything like it was in the museum in Cairo. Having wandered back to the betting ring Amaze was 9/2 & I watched completely unsurprised as he drifted out to as long as 7's before going off at 6/1. The form reads, "Held up, ridden 2f's out, never threatened" Just about sums it up that. At least I got the favourite right, that was stone last & the stewards wanted a word after. The winner Clon Brulee had been taken out at York because of the soft ground & was well backed here into 7/2. Mowgli got 9/2 & then had a moan because it went 5/1 for a nano second, can't please some people can you:p Gibbon's was doing an Eva Moscrop & looking over his shoulder from a long way out while the horse sauntered home by 2.5l's & it could have been anything, it's all very well when they keep going but your not fooling the handicapper & you look a berk when it goes wrong, don't you Eva? Nothing from 40pts staked. The ice cream was nice. Re: Rio's Racing Diary You need to make those 18-1 winners pay, not everyday you find one of those. My ew bet on Caranbola that saw it run like a dog had knocked my confidence to back Ardmay to the same stakes, an argument for level stakes I guess. I should have been :nana but I was more :wall. A good bit of editing gave me this: <a href=http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m87/mowgli77/Ripon Races Sunday 19th May 2013/MrCarbonfootprintandSearchlightbattleoutthefirstrace.jpg' alt='MrCarbonfootprintandSearchlightbattleoutthefirstrace.jpg'> Managed to cut out the numpty. I thought you'd have gone to Ponty for the singles night, I've just caught a few races and they were showing a few fillies out for a good time looking for some Rio loving. :D I'm good for York races on Saturday if you fancy it. :ok

Re: Rio's Racing Diary I'm going to Wetherby this afternoon but first an update on the noted horses list. After a few runners last week the running totals stand at... Noted horses W/R 1-15 Stakes 15 return 7.5 P/L -7.5 What I didn't know was that Ton's Anna who I thought had been a close second at Catterick the other week had been awarded the race in the stewards room at a price of 10/1, I hadn't backed her anyway but that's a bit annoying. I didn't back her either at Redcar on Monday when she was unplaced & she's off the list now along with a few others that have disappointed.
Disclaimer is in the 3.45 at Goodwood, a Listed race worth knocking on for £23k to the winner & he's one of just three runners which is an absolute disgrace, the course puts on a race worth a decent amount & gets this support from owners & trainers, disgusting. Mr Mo Jo is back at Catterick in the evening, I'll have a closer look at this when I go through the card to see if it's worth going. Wetherby. Once we get past the ladies race, the seller & the four runner novice chase it's not bad fare. In the 3.55 Knight in Purple won this race last year off a 5lb lower mark & ran quite well LTO so he must have a chance. All That Remains got on the scoreboard over hurdles at kelso at the end of April but is up 8lb & this looks tougher. The one that takes the eye is Tindaro who won a decent chase at Kempton very well LTO & is off 5lb lower over hurdles. Only a 6yo so open to further progress, will like the ground & the trainer has a fair record here. The 4.30 is a belter of a chase for the time of year, worth £14k to the winner & a decent turn out:clap Junior & Pigeon Island have been around the block & have a touch of class. Lost Glory was looking most progressive last Autumn but then was pulled up in the Grand National, if he was to return to his best he'd go well but has that run at Aintree left a mark? De Boitron ended a three year losing spell last time but is up 7lb & has never won off a mark this high. Garelton won this off a pound less last year & was fourth behind De Bointron last time & is 7lb better off for just over 5l's, ought to go well from the front but is a 12yo now. Rolecarr was even further behind De Bointron & O Crotaigh is 9lb wrong & looks out classed. I like Alfie Spinner for this. He was a decent novice & started last season quite well in third at Ascot off 8lb higher behind Roberto Goldback. He unseated early in the Hennessy & then ran ok for a long way at Sandown, got stuck in the mud at Ffos Las over 3m 4f last time. Had three months to get over that, runs off a nice weight & he should go well on this better ground. Halifax has to give them all at least 7lb in the novice hurdle at 5.05 but unless somethings been hiding it's light under a bushel I don't see whats beating him. He won a Market Rasen handicap LTO with ease & apart from Loose Preformer he'd be giving all these more weight in a handicap. Loose Preformer's won over fences but seems to have lost the plot & was well beaten in a novice hurdle at Hexham last time. The only other one with any worthwhile form is Polarbrook but he looks a plodder. Halifax is not my sort of price but I've had a bet on him for something I'm working on which I may post up in the future. Bets. Tindaro 40pts @ 5.0 Betfair. Alfie Spinner 35pts @ 5/1 Bet365 BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary I like Wetherby, I really do. That's despite the fact that it seems to be the coldest place on the planet, it's well laid out, wherever you watch the race from you can get back to see them come into the winners, you can get down by the last hurdle. It's now got beyond a joke, not only can I not back a winner at Wetherby it seems I can't even get one to run owt like. I watched Tindaro drift out to 5/1 & finish a remote fourth, at least he got round, Distant Memories fell at the second & was fatally injured & watching him trying to get up was horrible. Alfie Spinner opened at 3/1, was backed into 5/2 "This must run well" I thought. He did for two to three furlongs, that's as long as it takes to get from the 3m 1f start, which is just before the winning post to the first fence which is the first one down the back. As they arrived there he was vying for the lead, he climbed over it. There are five fences down the back & four up the home straight, two circuits & you "jump" 18 fences, Alfie spinner did not "jump" one fence, he got a step ladder out & climbed over every one of all 18 fences. I give up, 7/1 when I first looked at the race the evening before, 5/1 when I backed him, he goes off at 5/2 & I'd given him up after the first fence, not a peep from the stewards. The race had a great finish, three in a line over the last. Noel Fehily looked like he'd timed it just right & hit the front but AP McCoy wasn't having it & got Lost Glory back up under the drive. I nipped round to get a shot of him returning, I then left the track despite having an interest in the next with Halifax, he was fourth. They kept telling us that next Thursdays evening meeting is the last of the season, which is great seeing as the season is less than a month old. I know what they mean though, Summer break, yeah right. Driving back in a less than cheerful mood & I'm five minutes from home where there is a building that has one of those displays that gives you the date, time & the temperature, 23/05/13, 17.25 & 4o centigrade. It's done nothing but chuck it down all day, Catterick was easy to swerve. Mr Mo jo was unplaced, Disclaimer won at Goodwood, there was a non runner, two runners for a Listed race with about £40k of prize money! York tomorrow, if it's not lagging it down. Re: Rio's Racing Diary The sun is out with a promise of it staying nice all day so off to York with Mowgli. 1.50 I backed Pintura at Thirsk a few weeks back when I thought he looked fat having got there, on his best form he'd go close but he's been last of six at Haydock since. Spiritual Star was a useful 2yo but tailed off on just the one run last year & has had foot problems but if ready after over a year off could run well. Our Johnathan ran well FTO in the Cammidge but then never got in it back at Donny next time, the ground will suit, stays 7f & he should run well here, he's the pick. 2.20 I don't usually do short one's but Songcraft ought to have too much for these & he goes well fresh. How it's fast ground over at Haydock I don't know but Sole Power has his conditions over there, he won the race two years ago & was a close second last year. I have these two coupled. I was leaving the sprints alone but Judge and Jury loves York, was a close third here last week on his return & should give a run for the money in the 2.55. I want to look at the 2yo's before maybe having a bet but it should be a good race for future pointers. Pintrada ran into traffic problems on his seasonal return here last week & with that run & a clear passage he can land the 4.00. Bets. Our Johnathan 55pts @ 11/4 Stan James. Judge and Jury 15pts ew @ 12/1 Ladbrokes. Pintarda 20pts @ 10/1 Betvictor. Songcraft 20pts @ 6/4. Sole Power 20pts @ 7/4. 10pt double the above two @ Betvictor, all BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A better day than it looked at York on Saturday, it always helps when the suns out & it was hard to believe it was like mid-winter just 48 hours earlier at Wetherby. I wanted a good start & Our Johnathan was well backed into 7/4 in the first. He hit the front before the 2f but then couldn't pick up & seemed to be wandering a bit, I think he was feeling the ground & there was no way there was any soft in the going. They'd changed it to good before the off but I think it was faster than that which was backed up when Jamaican Bolt was taken out of the sprint. Songcraft did the business in the next, cruising to the front & quickly going clear, at 2f he looked like winning easily but then got me a bit worried by dossing around & letting Bite the Cherry get too close for comfort. Mowgli managed to find the sprint winner with Kingsgate Choice but for a second it looked like York Glory, who I backed last time was getting there. Judge and Jury was in front 2f out but finished next to last, what was weird was that when the jocks were asked to mount he'd disappeared out of the parade ring & came back in again. We can only think that he possibly spread a plate & went off to be reshod, if that was the case that woudn't have helped because they never seem to win when that happens. We watched Magician win the Irish 2000 on the big screen, Van Der Neer was nowhere which does nothing for the English Guineas form. While this was happening the 2yo's were parading & turning the attention back to them the pick for me was the Kevin Ryan trained Astaire. A look on Betfair had him at 17.5 & a bet was struck, what was a surprise was the place price of 5.5 & another bet was on at the odds. He made virtually all & kept on well to score, even then there's a kick in the teeth with the favourite withdrawn at the start for a rule4 of 30p for those with the bookies, it was slightly better for me working out at just over 26% on the exchange. I suppose that the jolly might have won if it had run though. I now needed Sole Power for a good day. The signs looked good, well backed into 11/10 he hit the front a furlong out & then folded up just as quickly. He beat Kingsgate Native last time & in this race two years ago & I suspect he was feeling the effects of a busy time lately. Pintrada drifted to 12/1 with a couple of non runners since I'd backed him too so I'd pretty much written him off when the final nail in the coffin arrived & he won the best turned out! He was held up & tried to run on late but wasn't getting there anywhere near quick enough. Mowgli backed the winnerPearl Bridge in the maiden where I had the favourite with another in a small forecast bet. That was never coming off & Kyllachy Rise looks one to avoid. I'm on Handiwork in the 2.50, he does look a bit of a plodder but is up to 1m 6f here in a weak race with Fallon on top & if he's ever going to win it's in this. With Grandorio out the 3.25 looks between Maputo & Legal Waves who both have some fancy entries & seem quite well thought of. At the prices I'll go with Fallon again & Legal Waves. The Zetland Gold cup is a good race but Clon Brulee won that well at Ripon last week that I have to back him with the 6lb pen. I got 5.1 on Betfair but the Cecil runner has come out taking it down to 4.68. I am undecided about Dr Irv in the 5.05. This is the one that should have won at Ripon the other week but Eva Moscrop messed up, he's gone up 3lb for that & she was taking off 7lb so he's 10lb worse off. It's not the greatest race though & he looks to have Brasingaman Eric & Madrasa to beat & Dr Irv has won over C&D & was a good second here too. I just get the feeling I may have missed the wedding & might end up at the funeral, I'll see how the day goes I think. Bets. Handiwork 35pts @ 5/1 Betvictor. Re: Rio's Racing Diary You might have already seen it but Avon Breeze that won easily under Amy Ryan is out tomorrow under a 6lb penalty. 3 length winner over 5f last time out but for me is still between 3-5lb well in even with the penalty and is available at 3-1 at the moment.

Ought to go well but it looks quite a warm race. Willbeme won a couple for me last year then put in not so good effort when last seen, caught my eye when running well on the wrong side at Thirsk FTO last season. Think I'll sit this one out. Not a bad day in the end again yesterday. Nothing of note from the 2yo opener but Handiwork looked ok before his race. He looked like he was coming with a winning run but the Sir Mark Prescott trained Man From Seville swooped close home to win by three parts of a length. He has a lot like this, they do nowt as a 2yo then win races stepped up in trip as 3yo's, having said that he showed nothing FTO at Leicester & didn't look gambled on here. I've often thought that Sir Mark ought to win more quality races & they always give the impression that it's a gambling stable. I know he's a Baronet but that doesn't always mean their loaded, judging by the size of the buffet legs he smokes I'd say he wasn't short of a bob or two & I just wonder if he thinks he ought to have won some really big races on a regular basis? It seems the stewards wanted a word...
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, MAN FROM SEVILLE, ridden by Luke Morris and trained by Sir Mark Prescott, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the gelding had been a backward and immature two year old and additionally had benefitted from a step up in trip. Having heard her evidence they forwarded her explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of MAN FROM SEVILLE could be reviewed.
With a second non runner in the 3.25 we were down to four. The pick going round was Maputo for me & he was a shade of odds on but drifted to 6/5 as Legal Waves shortened to 13/8. Just over 2f's out De Sousa said go on Maputo & the other three didn't see which way he went, there was a long looking 10l's to the second & he's clearly useful but the other three don't look much & how strong that form is I don't know. Having decided Clon Brulee looked ok but the best looking was Eshtibaak I wandered round to the betting ring where I watched as he went on the slide out to 9/2 while Silver Lime & Gabrial the Great shortened. I was a bit miffed that I could have backed him now at a better price than what I'd taken with the Cecil horse still in. A look at Betfair showed he could be had at over 6, "Bite the bullet & back him again" I thought, so I did. He tracked Gabrial the Great & took him on coming to the furlong pole, he'd just seen him off when finishing well down the outside comes my mate Hamdan's Eshtibaak & he looks like getting caught. Credit Graham Gibbons though, no looking round this time, head down, full on drive & Clon Brulee responded to hold on by a half length. A look at the 3yo maidens in the next had me going for Dream Cast who looked well & had run some promising races last season. Nordikhab had had a few chances & now had blinkers on which had him playing up a bit in the ring. I had a bit at 3.7 on Dream Cast & watched him backed in to 15/8. He had to switch a couple of times but probably wasn't good enough anyway & came third. Now the big decision, do I back Dr Irv. Having looked at them in the ring I decided I'd back him to half the usual stakes if I could get 3/1. The idea being that if he won I wouldn't be kicking myself as hard for not backing him & if he got beat the same for backing him. A look at Betfair before leaving the parade ring & he was 3.85, I put in an order for 4.0 & wandered off to the betting ring where he was 11/4 & I watched him go 5/2, 9/4, 2/1, 15/8 & the odd board had 7/4 up before he returned at 2/1. Every chance 2f's out he was soon beaten. Now I'd checked before the off to see if I'd got matched, had I? Of course I had, I'd bet good money that if he'd won I wouldn't have. C'est la vie, exit stage left or rather car park left exit. I like Redcar, you can get round the place in all directions without breaking any world records & the car park is excellent, proper tarmac with proper painted parking bays, it's just a bit creepy driving in/out through the graveyard, shame the racing's usually rubbish. 179.84pts returned from 130pts posted. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Hilary Needler evening at Beverley & as usual a decent card. Defendant is odds on in the first. This is the one that was playing up a bit at Doncaster the other week. I want to see if he does so again & then I might take him on with something or possably go over to the pink side & lay him:eek The second is a trappy looking affair but should be worth a watch. I've said it before but it is a shame that the Hilary Needler has lost it's Listed status, there's usually a double figure field (11 tonight) The winner is nearly always a good filly & it's a damn sight better race than than some of the Listed & even Group3 tripe that gets served up. The upcoming Princess Elizabeth & Diomed stakes at Epsom spring to mind, both Group3's & usually contested by a bunch of ordinary handicappers trying to steal some black type. Lexington Rose has the plum draw in 1 with the Thirsk winner Champagne Babe next door, these two ran in the York Listed race won by Beldale Memory with the former in front in fourth. The ground was softish there though & both would be well suited by the faster ground tonight. I want to have a look at them first, especially Mops Angel, she's got a wide draw in 10 but it's not as big a disadvantage as it used to be. A change of tack here in that I fancy some short ones & have gone for some doubles & trebles with a bit of singles to cover, the stakes are reduced but the potential winnings increased. The 8.05 looks between Heeraat & Hamza. There was a neck between the pair at York last September with Heeraat in front getting a pound. Levels tonight with both in form, Hamza won at Newmarket LTO & Heeraat an excellent fourth in the Palace House. It's a stiff old finish here & I think that could just favour Heeraat. Mad Jazz hosed up at Ponty LTO which is a similar track to Beverley only the other way round. The step up to 12f should suit & she can defy the 6lb pen. In the last Clock on Tom keeps finding one too good. All Mushaakis's good form is at Kempton & he's done nowt in three turf runs. Knight Owl looks to be improving, ran well at Doncaster over 7f LTO & should like going back up to this 1m 100yds. Bets. Heeraat 20pts @ 11/8 Betvictor. Mad Jazz 20pts @ 9/4 Betvictor. Knight Owl 20pts @ 11/4 Stan James. 10pt Trixie the three, Heeraat 5/4 Stan James, all BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary It's often said that as you get older time seems to pass quicker, I wouldn't disagree with that. However it's a bit scary that it seems to me like we've just had a year go by in the space of a week. This time last week I was shivering in what seemed like mid-Winter at Wetherby. Two days later I'm basking in the late Spring, early Summer warmth at York. Another 48 hours later at Redcar, while it wasn't cold, it wasn't warm either & it could easily have passed for an Autumn day. Two more day pass & it's back to a drab Winter scene at Beverley last night. On that basis it ought to be "Cracking the flags" at Catterick tomorrow! The puddles in the car park (field) at Beverley clearly showed that plenty of rain had fallen but it was up as good to firm on the officials tower on the far side of the track. Straight after the first it was announced that the going was good, good to soft in places, not a surprise. Apart from one rather loud shout as he entered the parade ring Defendant went round like a lamb. Taking it up before the final furlong he went clear in a matter of strides to win like a 4/7 shot should. I'm not sure he beat much but I did note the Tim Easterby runner Three Glasses. I had seen this one last September at Thirsk when he'd walked out of the stalls, then ran into traffic problems & ended stone last. I had him on last years list but removed him with everything else apart from Dixie Sky at the start of this season. He didn't run again last year but returned at Thirsk on May 11th over a mile when I wasn't there & ran quite well for a long way. Last night he was fifth of the 10, beaten 8l's & keeping on a bit from the rear. He should now get a handicap mark & I'll stick him back on the list in the hope he pops up at a price, probably over a bit further on a galloping track. I thought the next race might be worth a watch & so it proved. Garde Cotiere has obviously had problems with only four starts before last night & he is a 5yo. He tried to make all but looked to have been caught close home by The Lock Master, however Garde Cotiere was brave & got back up to win by a short head. Even braver than it looked because he was bleeding from the nose after & is clearly fragile. The dank cold evening meant that most were walking round the parade ring with rugs on in most of the races. This meant looking at the Hilary Needler runners was a bit of guesswork. One that wasn't covered was Mops Angel & she did look quite nice, she'd been 9/2 when I walked through the betting ring on my way to look at them but when I went back she was 6's & 13/2. I was stood mulling over having a bet or not when she was given out as having won the best turned out, kiss of death, no thanks. I think that was the only thing I got right all evening because she was next to last. Middleham Park Racing had the first & second but there were a few long faces amongst them, it might have been because the 14/1 shot nutted the 6/4 jolly close home. My action now. Heeraat was wearing a rug but looked alright going down. Hamza was wearing pea green headgear & looked a pillock. It worked though because he won by just over a length with Heeraat hanging both ways under pressure, who's the pillock now? Mad Jazz was also covered & as far as I could see looked quite small. I decided to watch this from the stand, the start for 12f's is between the furlong & half furlong poles. Just down from me were a mixed group who burst out laughing when one of the girl's said "This is a short race isn't it" She had me smiling though when she then said "Oh are they going the other way round this time" I wasn't smiling when the stalls opened & they went off like they were actually racing over 200yds. Mad Jazz was in front into the bend but she was going too fast & doing too much in front, halfway down the back another one took over but I'd written her off by then & so it proved as she was legless in the last 2f's. The mood was black by now & the light not much better & I decided to bale out which proved to be the right choice because Knight Owl could only manage third. A bad night then but at least the way I staked it kept the losses down, minus 100pts. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Bit of a dash but I'm off to Catterick. Backed one in the Oaks.... Epsom 4.00 Talent I think this is about as open an Oaks as I've seen in a long while. I wasn't over impressed with Liber Nauticus at York & Im not a fan of Lingfield trial form so I'll oppose Secret Gesture too. Moth ought to go well at this trip having run well in the 1000 but at the price I like the Pretty Polly winner Talent. She seemed to improve for the step up there & should do again for a bit further here & having waited an age for a first English classic Richard Hughes can do a "London bus" & win another. Bet. Catt 4.10 Mappin Time was a bit unlucky at Haydock last week & can take this from a nice draw in 2. 5.10 Rangi Looks unexposed & was just held at Redcar LTO off this mark, blinkers on now & he can take this. Bets. Mappin Time 40pts @ 9/2 Coral Rangi 60pts @ 5/2 Stan James, both BOG. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Thanks for that guys but boy am I an idiot, actually I'm a complete cretin, Why? Not Talent, yes I had a proper bet, I was in a rush, cut & pasted from the BBOTD thread which included the stake & then I bashed off a few lines about the other two, didn't even do the bets in bold type like I usually do. So why the :wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall:wall ??? From my noted horses list....

Just Paul 24/04/2013 Catterick 3yohc Looked wl fair fifth FTO

Result from the last race.... Just Paul wins at 14/1. I'd seen him, I backed the bloody thing when he'd run at Redcar since & decided that he needed a bit of cut. The idea was to see if it really was good to soft & have a think then, when Rangi was a one paced third having been backed into 11/8 I threw the towel in & left, just got back & looked at the results. Idiot:spank:spank:spank:spank:spank:spank:spank:spank:spank:spank I shall do a full round up later when (if) I have calmed down. Rio.
