Trotter
Re: Horse racing glossary? I don't know of any site that explains all the 'jargon' of racing.......... As for the two examples...... 'Ridden out'.........this means that the jockey pushed the horse all the way to the line. Would be the opposite of 'eased when beaten'. You usually see it relating to horses a bit down the field who are either 'ridden out' or 'eased when beaten'.........or an easy winner who wins by 10 lengths might be 'ridden out' or 'eased in final furlong'..........the assumption would be that a horse who is 'ridden out' would be running to their best because they're pushed all the way to the line. 'Ran on'.........means a horse that made up ground towards the end of a race......you often see it of a horse that comes out of the pack and wins by 5 lengths or one that comes from the back and passes several runners in the final furlong or two. It's often used to indicate that a horse might improve over a longer trip because they're full of running at the end of the race. But it can be deceptive as they might just be plodding on past horses that are slowing down through tiredness, particularly in jump racing.
