Re: Grand Prix Snooker Thanks Kev A sombre week expected in Aberdeen with the recent shocking news regarding Hunter. The more established players will be more upset so i am expecting the odd upset. However the new format will work in some players advantage and it will be interesting to see. Ante post After studying the groups Ronnie has got a plum draw. I see no threat to him winning his gropu apart from himself. The 5 frame format should suit Ronnie as he is the kind of player who usually starts well as other players do take time to settle against him IMO. In addition his group will face in the last 16 the easiest group so there should be no problems in him getting to the last 8 and he won't be 4-1 then with the view of laying him off. 10 points Ronnie outright @ 4-1 with Stan James 10 points Ronnie to win his group at 10/11 with Premier Bet Williams has been in renewed form since winning the China. Again i feel if he has his head screwed on and doesn't let the mournful atmosphere get to him 15/8 to win his group is on the large side. 5 points Williams to top group at 15/8 Premier Ber Now for some patented Mullet accumulators. 4 point treble - Ebdon, Ronnie and Williams all to win their group with Premier bet 2 point acc - Ebdon, Ronnie, Williams and Stevens all to win their group(9/4, 10/11 and 15/8, 11/4 respectively) Stevens is the only one i see as risky but at 11/4 with Hendry the only real threat i think there s some value. If he beats Hendry, he wins the group and 11/4 is worth shoving in there for 2 points. Ebdon will love this event and is actually my 2nd shout after O'Sullivan. Matches 5 points Williams at 4/6 with Bet365 5 point Hendry/Ebdon double (both 4/6) with Betfred Not going to say much about these, we all know the players and they are all better then their opponents. Selby is a worry but Williams 3-2 would be my shout. If anyone knows which companies are doing correct score betting i'd appreciate it. Good luck - just waiting for Zulu and Kev now

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Aye nice writeup's Mullet. O'Sullivan looks good and is a great price but I reckon he'll be one of those most effected by the outside circumstances which will cloud this event. With the group format it's wide open and surprises will happen in best of 5 matches so I've gone for 3 outsiders and a couple of big priced group winners. 2pts R.Day to win Grand Prix 25/1 Ladbrokes Ryan Day showed on many occasions last seaosn just how talented a player he is. Although he's in probably the hardest group here I think he'll qualify. He shot off into 3-1 and 4-0 leads quite a few times last year and being a quick starter is a must in these groups. If and when he qualifies from his group the tournament takes a longer course which Day is very much used to now and it's time for him to be delivering titles to get to the next stage. 1pt ew M.Selby to win Grand Prix 50/1 Ladbrokes Mark Selby showed at the World Championships what he can do. I expect him to qualify from his group and then if he does that he's into longer match territory where he'll be more comfortable. Having nailed a couple of big scalps last season he'll want to build on that for this season and I think he'll have a good run here in Aberdeen. 1pt ew D.Dale to win Grand Prix 150/1 Ladbrokes This is a joke of a price tbh. Dominic Dale looked in great form in the NI Trophy where he made the semi finals only to be bashed by an on fire O'Sullivan 6-0. He's usually a fast starter and that will help here. There's not many he'll fear in the last 16 and beyond and at this price I just have to be on the Spaceman as he bids for a 2nd Grand Prix title. 1pt ew S.Davis to win Group C 10/1 Betfred (1/4 1,2) Thanks to the Premier League, Steve Davis has 2 advantages over everyone in his group bar O'Sullivan. 1) He's used to playing these quickfire matches and 2) he's been playing matches so has his eye in so to speak. These shorter games tend to make him more attacking and as we saw in last season's Premier League and UK Championship he can still cut the mustard at this level. Getting 5/2 on him coming 2nd makes this an attractive bet. 2pts G.Dott to win Group H 4/1 Totesport Many will consider the group revolving around Ding Junhui and Stephen Maguire but Dott's plucky enough to stay with and beat most over 5 frames. He's played a couple of Premier League matches where the standard is short and in his 1st BBC event as World Champion and in his home country too I'm sure he'll want to make an impression. I'll have a small bet on him taking this group.

2 just jump off the page at me today. 10pts L.Wen Bo to beat F.O'Brien 5/6 Ladbrokes Despite his young age, Liang Wen Bo has already shown he's got the talent to go a long way in the sport. 2nd behind Ding in the Chinese rankings this young man can attack like the best of them. He's going to fly up the rankings this season and will definitely be in the top 16 and the latter stages of ranking events sooner rather than later. Fergal O'Brien has disappeared from the top level these days and at any rate a best of 5 against a young whippersnapper ain't really his forte. Liang for me :ok 10pts J.Swail to beat J.Trump Evs Betfred This price is crazy. Sure Judd Trump has a massive future in snooker but that will be the future, it's not yet. Joe Swail is a seasoned pro who can still compete with the very best of them. It was only last week Swail was playing the Irish Professional Championships so he's had some match practice and this is an evening match which means he'll have had a game or two prior to this one. Have to side with experience over youth here by backing the Irishman to triumph.

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Top writing Kev I dont know anything about this Chinese chap and only know that this other whippersnapper has got all the other pro s talking so i will definitely look at this further Regarding your outrights Dale 100% agree - this man is capable but its early to say - as u say a small outright is a great bet as if he gets thru he ll drop to 33's then last 8 16's or so then he s well worth a lay or letting it run Also Day is one of my favs, however, this is general, but imo these young talented players often take two step forward and one back. The two players Selby and Day you ve higlighted did perform very well as expected in the Crucible but now there s expectation rather than hope. So it s a different level of pressure. Robertson has taken a while to get used to the level and now you cant get the prices you used to. Regarding Davis lets do a fingers crossed job. Great right up mate Speak after the 1st 40 matches are played!!!!!

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Hi guys, nice commentaries. I'm afraid I wont be too involved till at least tommorow. Had a shocking couple of weeks, and just had no warning or time to prepare for this tornament, don't even know about the new format! Soon as I get it together I'm back, hopefully in some better form.... No ones mentioned Doherty???

10pts S.Davis to beat D.Roe 8/11 Betfred Steve Davis won 1 of his 2 matches on Saturday losing to O'Sullivan 3-1 in the other. Here he faces a weaker opponent. As I expected the short format has made Davis play more attacking and it's working. David Roe is an experienced guy but quick, short matches aren't ever going to be his thing. He doesn't have the same to beat Davis in the break building department or the tactical battles and I see Davis winning this. 10pts N.Bond to beat J.Swail Evs Stan James Nigel Bond turned over Neil Robertson on day 1 and almost did for Ken Doherty too but went down 3-2. Swail beat Judd Trump but only 3-2. Bond appears to have settled into the new regime in this event. He showed signs of a return to something like his old self in the World Championships last season and seems to have carried on the form here. If he plays like he did yesterday he will win this one.

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Sorry been on the biggest all dayer on saturday - left work at 1am then stayed out untill 1am the next day, carnage. All my picks on Sunday won so i'm happier but i m not going to back post them - looks bad 4 points on Stevens to beat O'Brien at 8/15 Blue Square Stevens will be delighted to have got past Hendry, now he needs to push on and beat O'Brien. Should be about 1/2 so not that much value

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Agree with you there mullet. I've got 2 bets, I've decided to dabble in some doubles. with the aim of achieving Evens or better odds over 2 or 1 match... From this mornings action I see: Hendry v O'Brien Hendry not been performing exceptionally well, but he did beat Selby, and I think he has the skill to beat O'brien in 5 now the pressures on. O'Brien coming from a 3-1 defeat yesturday (good job mullet man!) Bingham v Hull Binghams been beat by 2 good players, namely McCullock (3 for 3) and Stephen Lee. Robin Hull should be much less of an opposition and a good chance for Bingham to get his first win. Ebdon v Hamilton Ebdon's playing a shocker, he don't like these best of 5's. Although both players are 0 for 3, I thing Hamilton has aquitted himself better over the 5 frame format. I'd take him to pip the match which will be slow and loose. A value bet... 10pt Double @ 2/15 (combined odds) Hendry Win - 1.33 @ Stans Bingham Win - 1.62 @ Stans 5pt Single Hamilton Win - 2.20 @ Stans Also, I like the look of McCullock when he plays Lee later, at Evens a good bet as hes 3 for 3 and seems to be taking to these quick fire groups...

Re: Grand Prix Snooker 10 points McCulloch to beat Lee Laid my balls on the line and have bet the maximum on McCulloch. There aren't many times i back against Lee as i think he is generally under-rated by most pundits despite he s got 'the best cue action in the game'. IMO this is a coin flip and the bookies originally went up with 8/11 evens. McCulloch has been playing well and i would actually go 5/6 the pair so its a hint of value. Only betting the max cos he s one of my favourite players Also

Re: Grand Prix Snooker 10pts J.Cope to beat R.Milkins 8/11 Premierbet Jamie Cope emerged as a serious talent last season and his 147 in the group stages would only confirm that. Now that we are back to best of 9 frames I think this is a tremendous price against a Milkins who is very inconsistent. Cope has a real chance of making the top 16 at the end of this season and a win here really helps his chances.

Not sure about Higgins -1 as Stevens has been playing very well and I feel this one could go down to the wire. Have to go with Cope again 10pts he was awesome last night and I cannot see Perry getting in his way (8/11). Kevshat we got that one right :drums

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Well, not a fanastic start for me, -15pts... Bad luck Mullet, but somehow I'm drawn to McCullock today, I know Day is proving to have some talent, and I don't know why but I see a 5-3, 5-4 victory for Ian M, what do you think? my bet today is 8pts - Lee vs King - Lee to win 1.62 @ Stans Both players have had similar group experiances, but now where on telly and back up to 9 frames. Lee can show his familiarity with the format and win...

Re: Grand Prix Snooker I think Perry's an excellent price here :unsure . 10pts J.Perry to beat J.Cope 11/10 Stan James Joe Perry was probably the best I've ever seen him during his 5-0 demolition of Ken Doherty. He's been in a few quarter finals before but surprisingly has only made 1 final. He's got a good chance of making the semis if he can repeat his performance from Wednesday night. Jamie Cope was an impressive winner against Robert Milkins on Wednesday but that was to be expected really however I get the feeling that his exertions this week could be catching up with him. This is his 1st ranking event 1/4 final and nerves could play a part. Having hit his 147 earlier in the week it's sure to be a week he won't forget but experience could well be vital at this stage of the tournament and Perry has lots of that so at the price I'll go with the Cambs potter.

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Perry v Cope, Selection: Perry, Price: 2.20, Bookmaker: Premierbet, Strength: 10/10 I thought Perry was playing pretty good earlier in the tournament then he went up another level against Doherty! He seemed very solid and is experienced so I think he can get past this young guy. I don't really know too much about Cope, but I have heard a lot of praising things about him so he seems to have a lot of potential. But at this point in the tournament I take the experienced man to get a win especially with him being the outsider.

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Gonna have to disagree here on this one. I'm backing Cope at 1.85 on Betfair. Based on the last 18 months play, I have Cope down as the much better player of the two - and in another 18 months time, Cope will probably be top 10, with Perry somewhere between 16 and 32. The only reason I wouldn't be backing Cope - is the experience factor (have to agree on that one), but I don't always think Perry performs great in front of the cameras. Perry was magnificent in his beating of Doherty - but Cope has put in some sterling work this week (even without the 147 - which he has reacted fantastically to btw - might have had a negative effect on some). If it's a potting contest - Cope all the way. If it becomes a little bogged down early - I might lay off.

Re: Grand Prix Snooker Anyone got an opinion on how Ronnie played today? I had no financial interest in this game by the way, so this definitely isn't sour grapes, but I was amazed at how easily Ronnie gave up a couple of the frames. Especially thinking of the 4th frame, where Robertson potted a thin green to leave Ronnie needing one snooker, but in the process snookered himself on the brown. Now it was a fairly easy hit (although from distance) and Ronnie conceded the frame without even making him attempt it. Steve Davis said afterwards that if anyone had a punt on Ronnie they might be feeling "disappointed" with the effort he showed. Frankly, if I'd backed him, I'd have been fkin outraged :lol , but then I guess the counter arguement is you know what you're getting when you risk your cash on the Rocket.

Bookmaker/PriceStan James @ 1.67 (Back)
ReasoningMcCulloch is a far heavier scorer and regular break builder compared to the gritty McManus. He's a 1.66 favourite here and I would probably make him a 1.50 favourite. I regard this as a very strong bet, as McManus just doesn't score regularly enough, let's hope that stands up here.
