EARLY GAME THOUGHTS

Mariners V Perth – One would think the Mariners at home would win this as they have bounced back to a bit of form and have scored in their last 4 games and are starting to find form of last season. Perth is away from home and will put up a bold effort. Likely Mariner win or a draw

Sydney V Melbourne – After last weeks results not sure which way this will go. Healthy rivalry here and could go either way as both teams love to beat each other. Sydney have been schaiisenhausen the last two weeks but they will up the ante against Melbourne because of the stakes on offer. Melbourne had their first loss last week and will be keen to atone. This shapes as a draw for mine at the moment, or an away win.

Queensland V Newcastle - Queensland going great guns at the moment and they are brilliant at home. The Jets had a great win last weekend and not before time, and they will be hoping to take the same form into this match. This shapes as a home win.

Adelaide V NZ Knights – Adelaide are at $1-22 and realistically they should be a $1-01. Adelaide have been the first team to beat Melbourne this season and the Knights have only scored one goal for the season and only had the one win, but you guessed it, the one win was against Adelaide. So maybe the short odds are not so good after all. In five meetings between these teams there have been three 1-0, one 1-1 and one 2-1 result and only 8 goals in five games, which is interesting considering how poor the Knights are. Maybe they lift against Adelaide.

If I could do that every week I would be a rich man Ads :loon One of those moments when all the betting planets aligned and turned an ordinary weekend into one of great joy and profit...Still coming down from the high actually and thanx for your well wishes. :ok Not sure if we are going to find that kind of value this week but I like the look of the Mariners and Queensland at home...Mariners have a 4-1-1 h2h record against Perth and they are hitting their straps with Mori up front...While I like the look of Queensland at home, they look the bet of the round at $1-80.

Ferguson linked with Glory
space.gif
089855news.jpgspace.gif
Iconic Scottish footballer Duncan Ferguson is reportedly considering accepting an invitation to play in the Hyundai A-League with Perth Glory. Ferguson, who won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995 and has played in the Champions League and UEFA Cup competitions, quit the Toffees at the end of last season after mainly being relegated to the bench. However, the tall 35-year-old, who has won seven caps with Scotland, is apparently keen to make the move to Australia with the West Australian side - so much so that he has rejected competing offers from other English and Scottish sides since leaving Everton. Ferguson has been nominated as one of the hardest strikers to defend against because of his skill in holding the ball up and allowing players to run off him, his ability to read the defence and his height, making him a potent target from corners and set-plays.

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Love the price for Queensland ($1.80) to beat Newcastle .. I'll second that as being the bet of the round .. Queensland + Adelaide - $2.25 Looks pretty good to me .. Haven't looked into Queensland's situation as far as injuries go for this weekend, but if they're healthy enough they'll beat Newcastle. Don't even care about the past as far as Adelaide v New Zealand goes .. United WILL mail this in ..

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Central Coast v Perth Glory Previous meeting Perth 2 Central Coast 0 (Members Equity Stadium, Hyundai A-League round two, September 2006) Last five results Central Coast: Loss - Draw - Win - Loss - Win Perth: Loss - Loss - Win - Win - Loss Analysis The league's most in-form marksmen - temporary Central Coast signing Damian Mori and his replacement at Perth Glory Stuart Young - will battle it out on Friday night with both clubs desperate to hang on the coattails of the top four. Mori, who in five seasons with the Glory netted 84 goals in 129 matches, has bought his trademark predatory instinct to the East Coast to help kick-start a Mariners campaign in danger of flagging with only a third of the season gone. The 36-year-old evergreen striker, who has had his four-game temporary stint extended by another three because of Andre Gumprecht's knee injury, scored twice against Sydney last Friday to trump the defending champion and hand the Mariners their first home win of the new season. Meanwhile, Young, the striker hardly given a chance in his first year under former coach Steve McMahon despite averaging a goal a game in the NSL with Wollongong, has flourished under Ron Smith as one of the Glory's main strikers. The 33-year-old Englishman has found the net on five occasions already this season, including an opening minute tap-in against the Roar last weekend, a run that dates back to his maiden league goal in Perth colours against this week's opponent in round two. Young also scored twice on the Glory's previous visit to New South Wales when Perth defeated the Jets 3-0. Despite a narrow loss to the Queensland Roar, coach Ron Smith will be loathe to make too many changes to the side which now embarks on four consecutive away trips. The only alteration to the 15-man squad is the loss of ever-present defender David Tarka who limped off last weekend with a calf strain. With Naum Sekulovski (hamstring) also unfit, Smith elects to call-up short-term signing Paul Pezos, the former Adelaide City defender. Central Coast coach Lawrie McKinna adds Vuko Tomasevic and Mile Jedinak to the Mariners' squad.

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory Previous meeting Melbourne 3 Sydney 2 (Telstra Dome, Hyundai A-League round two, September 2006) Last five results Sydney: Draw - Win - Win - Draw - Loss Melbourne: Win - Win - Win - Win - Loss Analysis Melbourne Victory faces the fiercest test of its championship credentials this weekend when it makes the trip to Aussie Stadium to tackle Sydney FC. After eight rounds, just as last season, the Victory tops the table but it is the manner in which Melbourne responds to last Sunday's loss to Adelaide that will provide some clues to Ernie Merrick's side's durability as long-term league leaders. This time last year Merrick's men followed up its 5-0 thrashing of Sydney - a win which sent them to the table's summit - with one point from a possible 15, a sequence which ultimately cost them a playoff berth. With that in mind, captain Kevin Muscat is right to suggest Saturday's meeting with the reigning champion is a test of character against an unpredictable Sydney side humbled by the Mariners in round eight. Coach Terry Butcher is having no joy retaining a settled starting XI with his latest conundrum how to replace the injured Benito Carbone who now looks as though he played his last game against the Central Coast. Butcher has chopped and changed his system in recent weeks but many believe Sydney's best displays have come when it has played a lone striker and a supporting cast of three attack-minded midfielders. Personnel, though, is the problem with Carbone gone, Robbie Middleby still sidelined with a broken collarbone and David Carney, who is now back in training, still not ready for a return following shoulder surgery. However, Mark Milligan is back after a hamstring strain sidelined him for both Socceroos fixtures and Sydney's loss last weekend. Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick has managed his absences well particularly when Fred has banned for three matches earlier in the season following an incident in the round two encounter with Sydney and while Archie Thompson was in action for the Socceroos. Last weekend saw another example with the incoming Steve Pantelidis hardly putting a foot wrong against Adelaide as a replacement for the suspended Adrian Leijer although the youngster returns after a one-match ban. Mark Byrnes makes way. Kevin Muscat and Iain Fyfe, who scored in Sydney's 3-2 loss earlier this year, are both on three yellow cards.

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Queensland Roar v Newcastle Jets Previous meeting Newcastle 2 Queensland 3 (EnergyAustralia Stadium, Hyundai A-League round two, September 2006) Last five results Queensland: Win - Draw - Loss - Draw - Win Newcastle: Draw - Draw - Loss - Loss - Win Analysis Following last weekend's drought-breaking 3-0 win over the Knights and subsequent rise from the bottom of the table, reports have suggested caretaker coach Gary van Egmond may have already done enough to acquire the top job - at least until the end of the season. Certainly, Van Egmond deserves credit for keeping his side going when the scores were deadlocked with 20 minutes remaining and for the way Jade North's opener came as a direct result of practicing set-piece routines during the week. But the interim Newcastle's manager's ability to snare the head coaching position on a long-term basis is perhaps more likely to be tested by the way his team handles a trip to second-placed Queensland Roar. The Jets haven't won on the road since late November last year when they beat Perth 1-0 courtesy of Vaughan Coveny's second-half strike with Van Egmond fortunate Coveny has raced back from a hamstring injury so quickly. The way the former assistant to Nick Theodorakopoulos juggles the attacking combinations of Coveny, Joel Griffiths, Milton Rodriguez and Nick Carle, not to mention young gun Mark Bridge, will go a long way to predicting his fortunes this season. Griffiths was red-carded the last time these teams met in round two, a final twist in a strange affair which saw a pair of farcical own goals from Paul Okon and Chad Gibson and a last-gasp winner from Simon Lynch. Lynch dropped down to the bench last weekend because of tiredness but should get the nod to start on Sunday alongside Reinaldo and former Jet Ante Milicic who scored a beautiful equaliser against Perth. Gibson, though, might not be so lucky with Sasa Ognenovski and Josh McCloughan once again outstanding in central defence and auxiliary full-back Stuart McLaren a rock when moved to midfield in the second-half. The captain is, though, added to coach Miron Bleiberg's provisional 16-man squad, however Chinese striker Yuning Zhang is not. Queensland has also lost Massimo Murdocca to a foot injury with the midfielder, not always a first choice this season, expected to miss at least a month.

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Adelaide United v New Zealand Previous meeting New Zealand 1 Adelaide 0 (North Harbour Stadium, Hyundai A-League round two, September 2006) Last five results Adelaide: Win - Draw - Loss - Win - Win New Zealand: Loss - Loss - Loss - Loss - Loss Analysis Nothing much has gone right for Knights coach Paul Nevin since Malik Buari's stunning long-range goal separated New Zealand and Adelaide at the beginning of September. At that stage, Nevin's confident side sat third in the table after taking four points from its opening two matches and looked ready to bury the ghosts of last season's dismal campaign. But Nevin must have suffered a few sleepless nights since with their sixth successive defeat against the Newcastle Jets last round condemning the Knights to bottom place for the first time this season. Those turning on the club after its failure to even score in those six straight losses include some who applauded Nevin's recruitment policy in the close season and praised his side for its organisation and commitment during the Hyundai A-League Pre-Season Cup. Any side would miss quality of players such as Matt Carbon, the graceful central defender who's yet to make his competitive debut for New Zealand, and midfield enforcer Jonas Salley. The Ghanaian has already missed five rounds with an ankle injury with countryman Hamza Mohammed only last weekend making his first appearance after administrational difficulties. The Knights were also forced to manage without Dani Rodrigues and Buari (hamstring) against the Jets and while the latter is a welcome return against Adelaide, Rodrigues has been ruled out for the entire season with a knee injury. Knee problems also deny Fernando the chance to return to the squad although 18-year-old striker Nathan Burns has masked the Brazilian's absence well with a series of mature performances. Indeed, Adelaide has been approaching its strongest form in recent outings following back-to-back wins over the Mariners and the Victory with even the 4-1 loss to Sydney FC flattering the reigning champion. The main decision for John Kosmina, who will fancy Adelaide's chances of making that three wins in a row against the Knights, is upfront with the availability of Shengqing Qu putting pressure on Burns, who has recovered from sickness earlier in the week, and Carl Veart.

The Mariners took four games to score a goal but have now scored in their last four games and that is largely attributed to Damian Mori’s presence in attack. Perth have the highest amount of shots in the league but they only score around every 14 shots and they have a higher shot average at home than they do away.

These two teams have no major changes to last week and both are starting to hit a bit of form.

It’s hard to predict this league at times. Three weeks ago Sydney belted Adelaide 4-1 and the next week Adelaide belted the Mariners 3-1 and then last week the Mariners belted Sydney 3-1. The Mariners have not lost at home this season and they have never lost at home to Perth in the A League. Perth have had three away games and have lost two of them 3-0 and won the other game 3-0, so the three zip scoreline is a favourite of the Glory.

I jumped on the Mariners when they were beaten by Adelaide then I got off them when they smashed Sydney last week, and this week I am back on them because I thought they were quite brilliant last week in beating Sydney in all facets of the game. Mori is starring up forward and kicking goals, and the Mariners are starting to get back to some of last year’s form and they have a lot of home games in the remaining rounds which will benefit them greatly. Perth have been playing well but there away form is not so flash and I am fairly confident the Mariners will get home here and I am backing them accordingly. Adelaide are pretty short this week so I am going to use them to prop up some multiple bets, but it’s the Mariners for me tonight and hopefully Ads will be on side too.

He recently also spent time in jail for assaulting another player on the pitch. Maybe John Kosmina should look at signing him to Adelaide Utd, he would fit in perfectly...

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Central Coast vs Perth Glory Great game to kick off the round. Both teams are in form in recent weeks but its the Central Coast i favour here. Damien Mori has been the reason for Central Coasts remarkable return to form as the former NSL goalscoring king has brought his goalscoring powers to the A-League and is causing major damage to all defences. While the Glory do have a good defence in Stan Lazarides, Simon Collosimo and Leo Bertos, i believe Damien Mori may be able to add to his tally yet again tonight in what will be a low scoring game. Both defences are pretty solid but can leak goals at times but because either side are desperately chasing a win they cant afford any slip ups at the back. For Perth, they have a goalscorer in form also in Stu Young but he wont have it as easy tonight as he has in recent weeks. Perth made the long 3 hour flight over to Central Coast yesterday so will be interesting to see if they can last the full 90 minutes without fatigue kicking in. But i cant go past the Central Coast here, they have good players in all positions and Tony Vidmar pushing them forward into attack and helping out in defence is a big reason why they have been so impressive in recent weeks, plus they have solid backup in players like Jamie McMaster, Noel Spencer & Tom Pondeljak. Central Coast for mine. Pick Central Coast to WIN at $2.15 - (6/10) Pick UNDER 2.5 at $1.97 - (5/10) or the ads25 longshots of: Pick Damien Mori to Score First or Last $6.00 (each) - (4/10) Pick Draw/Perth at $5.25 - (3/10) Good luck!! :ok

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 I'm glad that you both agree on CC to win. I will go for that pick too and backing it with CS 1-1 or perhaps 0-0. Also halftime X looks good too. I've been listening the games on radio but sure it doesn't compares with watching them. GL with your picks today :hope:hope:hope

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Hi Guys, Here's my bets for tonights game: CnCst Win @ $2.00 & Game Under 2.5 @ $1.92 A little word of warning, I had $500 worth of bets last weekend and ended with a $0 bank balance by Sunday night so i'm not having a good run! Things could change though. Good luck guys.

Re: Australian A League - Round 9

Taken CCM -0.25 3/10. Its true that CCM is on form but still I have a gut feeling it might be draw so yeah, just take some insurance :) G'luck everyone!
Yeh was thinking that way myself but Perth do have a long away trip and the fact that the Mariners are unbeaten at home this season and against Perth at home too leads to either a home win or perhaps a draw if things don't go to plan. The Mariners were very good last week against Sydney and I am thinking that they will be even better this week as they will have more confidence and it is also another home game in a row. Looks like we are all on the Mariners so thats good if they get up :ok

Re: Australian A League - Round 9 Hi guys, great stuff last week and during this week. Beejay!!!! what a senastional round you had last week, solid gold!!!! Anyway I am going to buck the trend here and take Perth at +1 with centrebet, while CCM did have a good win last week I think it was a case of beating up on a shambolic Sydney side who seem uninterested in playing football and more interested in the media and business dealings. Perth for me will dominate CCM too much in the midfield with Laza in some fine form over the past few weeks being well supported by Collosimo who seems to be fit for the first time in years. I think this dominance will force CCM to play long and wide and allow Perth to at worst lose by only 1 and at best take the three points here. so Perth Glory +1 @ $1.67 on Centrebet !
