Cardiff vs Fulham

The Championship action is relentless in this frantic stage of the season. It's Cardiff versus Fulham in a 3pm GMT kick-off on Saturday afternoon from the Cardiff City Stadium where the home side will be looking to build on a positive display that albeit ended in defeat against Huddersfield against a title-chasing away team who seem destined to make a return to the top flight of English football.

Cardiff might be experiencing positive change under head coach Steve Morison but the results remain quite inconsistent. It was nearly a perfect counter attacking performance against Huddersfield in midweek but a couple of errors in the final third late on that led to attacks on the Cardiff back-line saw a 1-0 lead vanquished in the dying minutes to become a 2-1 defeat. The Bluebirds remain down in 19th position and 15 points clear of relegation. Every game now is realistically a preparation for next season with the club unlikely to go down now. The good news is that Cardiff are unbeaten in their last 4 home league games including winning 3 of those matches. The bad news is that Cardiff have not managed to keep a clean sheet in their last 14 meetings with Fulham.

Fulham seem set for a swift return to the Premier League this season with the club sitting top of the Championship table and 11 points inside the automatic promotion places with a game in hand on some teams behind them. Marco Silva has earned high praise for the way he has maximised the team's attacking threat with the team already scoring 81 goals this season (for context, the next highest scorers are Bournemouth and QPR with 49 goals) with striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring 33 of those goals in a record-breaking campaign. It's now 7 wins from the last 9 league games with the team not losing away from home in the league since 2nd October when they suffered a 4-1 loss away to Coventry. The Cottagers are scoring an average of 2.72 goals away from home in the league so far this season.

This will be a very tough game for Cardiff. They showed against Huddersfield that they can go toe-to-toe with teams at the top end of the table but Fulham are another level up again. There is no doubt that the away side possess the far superior squad but with a home crowd behind them I think Cardiff will put up a strong fight. I just think Fulham's quality will prevail to get a solid win.
