Villarreal vs Arsenal

The hosts head to this game after two straight defeats in La Liga, and the last one came against Barcelona. The Yellow Submarine still fights for a place in the Europa League next season’s edition, and they are one point behind Betis. However, Unai Emery’s side needs to improve its performances on the home pitch. Villarreal lost four out of the last five games at Estadio de la Ceramica, and they need to get back on the winning track. Gerard Moreno and the lads have been pretty efficient in front of the oppositions’ net, but their defense should tighten up its lines. The home side conceded at least once in the previous five matches in all competitions, and a clean sheet in this one would help them a lot to increase their chances of advancing to the finals. Interestingly, Emery is a former Arsenal manager, and he perfectly knows how to win this competition, as he did it three times in a row with Sevilla.

Arsenal’s chances of snatching a continental spot through the Premier League vanished last weekend, as they lost to Everton 1:0 at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners sit in a disappointing 10th spot, and the Community Shield trophy won’t satisfy the fans. Mikel Arteta’s team celebrated only once in the previous five Premier League rounds and is seven points behind Tottenham. The only chance to play continental football next season for Alexandre Lacazette and the lads is to win the Europa League. Arsenal managed to get back in the tie against Slavia Prague after drawing 1:1 at home. The English side stormed through Prague and got back home with a 4:0 victory.  They are entirely focused on this competition and want to secure an active result ahead of the second-leg game in London.

Full-Time Winner Odds & Prediction

These two sides met each other four times, and both games in Villareal ended in a draw. Since none of the teams have been consistent lately, we wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see a winner in this one as well.

Goals Market Prediction

Villarreal has been involved in many high-scoring games lately, and in their last five fixtures, we saw goals in both nets. Arsenal has also been unstable in the back recently, conceding in eight of the previous ten matches. We don’t think either side will keep a clean sheet in this one.

Manchester United vs Roma

After five straight wins in all competitions, Manchester United recorded a goalless draw away to Leeds last weekend. However, that one won’t hurt the Red Devils too much, as they are about to end the Premier League campaign as runners-up. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has been excellent in 2021, and they lost just once since the end of January. Since the elimination from the Champions League group stage, one of the primary goals of the season is to challenge the Europa League title. Manchester United had a tricky path in the knockout stage, beating Real Sociedad, Milan, and Granada on the way. Bruno Fernandes and the lads have been clinical in front of the opposition’s net this season, and they want to keep up where they left off.

Roma snatched only a point from the previous three Serie A rounds, and the away side is out from the Europa League spot race for the next season. Giallorossi will struggle to keep their Europa Conference League position intact since Sassuolo is only three points below and on a remarkable winning streak. Pedro Martins’s side lost to Cagliari last weekend, and they failed to win four times in a row in all competitions. Edin Dzeko and the lads have been pretty productive in the final third, but their poor defense cost them too many points. The visitors knocked out Braga, Shakhtar, and Ajax to reach this stage, and the most challenging task is ahead of them. They want to put a disciplined performance to secure a positive result ahead of the return clash in Rome.

Full-Time Winner Odds & Prediction

Manchester United is in much better momentum, and the Red Devils are firm favorites in this clash. We believe the hosts will meet the expectations and secure an advantage before their trip to Stadio Olimpico. Man Utd has been confident against Roma at Old Trafford so far, winning all three head-to-head clashes in their backyard.

Goals Market Prediction

Despite being productive lately, Roma managed to keep the clean sheet just once on the previous ten occasions. We expect to see an entertaining clash that can bring us at least three goals in total.

Arsenal's success in the Europa League is admirable, but without Obamayang or Lacazette leading the attack, they will certainly have a hard time continuing this hot streak. Emery knows a thing or two more about Europa League knockout matches, and the former Arsenal boss is definitely dreaming of ousting his former employers from the tournament, we believe both teams can score and leave the qualifiers open.
VILLARREAL vs ARSENAL @@ Both team to score, odds 1.75

An exciting clash of different approaches will take place during this match, as the possession-oriented Roma - having conceded more goals than anyone else in the top half of Serie A - meet a team of Manchester United in the most dangerous on all lines of the field. Confidence is definitely higher in the home side's camp, as Roma have stumbled several times, while the impressive United continues to find goals from various sources, so the English club can create a useful lead for Rome next week.

Manchester United vs Roma

The Europa League Semi-Final first legs are taking place on Thursday night and the first game I'm previewing is the 8pm BST kick-off between Premier League side Manchester United and Italian Serie A club Roma at Old Trafford. These two clubs have been used to playing their football in the latter stages of the Champions League in years gone by but here they face-off in UEFA's second tier competition for a chance to reach the final.

Manchester United could end up having a relatively productive season but the coming weeks will decide that. The Red Devils are currently 2nd in the Premier League and are still mathematically in the hunt for the title and they are just a few steps away from winning another major European trophy. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will see his team come into this game having entered this competition at the last 32 stage having finished 3rd in their tough Champions League group that contained PSG, RB Leipzig, and Istanbul Basaksehir before eliminating Real Sociedad, AC Milan, and Granada in the Europa League knockout phase. United have history on their side having not lost a home European semi-final game since 1997 and have only lost 1 of their last 12 matches against Italian opposition in European competition.

Roma will see this as a chance to get back to the glory days that the club enjoyed in the 2000s. Head coach Paulo Fonseca knows this is his team's best chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League with the club down in 7th place in the Serie A table. The team have been impressive in this competition so far qualifying top of their group ahead of Young Boys, CFR Cluj, and CSKA Sofia before knocking out Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Ajax in the elimination phase. Unfortunately, Roma have lost each of their last 3 away trips to Manchester United. It has also been over 20 years since Roma last came away from England with a win in Europe. That last victory was a 1-0 win versus Liverpool in the UEFA Cup in February, 2001. If you are looking for an anytime scorer bet then striker Edin Dzeko has scored 5 goals in 4 appearances against United at Old Trafford.

It's probably fair to say that even though these two clubs are evenly matched in their European performances it's certainly Manchester United who hold the advantage over Roma in terms of domestic form. The English side have also only lost 1 of their last 6 meetings with Roma. There's no doubt this will be a tricky game for United and I think they'll do well to get the win but this is certainly a game where they are understandably favourites.

Villarreal vs Arsenal

The second of the two Europa League Semi-Final first leg matches I'll be previewing is also an 8pm BST kick-off on Thursday night with Spanish La Liga side Villarreal hosting Premier League under-achievers Arsenal at the Estadio de la Ceramica. This game will have an added bit of spice to it with Unai Emery potentially returning to haunt his former employers.

Villarreal have been one of European football's big success stories this season. The owners appointed Emery with a view to him working the magic he conjured at Valencia and Sevilla. It certainly appears he is doing just that. The club are at this stage of the Europa League and currently sit in 7th place in La Liga leaving them well-placed for European football again next season. In fact, only 6 defeats in their last 11 league games has seen them rule themselves out of competing for potentially qualifying for the Champions League. The Yellow Submarine have a three times winner and four times finalist of this competition at the helm in Emery and it's obvious to see. The team are unbeaten in this competition thus far having topped a group containing Maccabi Tel Aviv, Sivasspor, and FK Qarabag before eliminating RB Salzburg, Dynamo Kiev, and Dinamo Zagreb in the knockout stage. Striker Gerard Moreno has scored or assisted in each one of his 6 starts in this competition.

Arsenal are once again showing they understand how to play tournament football under head coach Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard has led his team to the FA Cup last season and now stand just 180 minutes away from a major European cup final. The Gunners may well be floundering down in 10th place in the league with hopes of qualifying for Europe via the league fast fading but they have kept their form together in this competition. Arsenal have only lost 1 of their 12 games in the Europa League having won each of their group games to finish top ahead of FK Molde, Rapid Vienna, and Dundalk before navigating their way past Benfica, Olympiakos, and Slavia Prague in the knockout phase. Arsenal are yet to beat Villarreal away from home having draw both of their previous trips. Arsenal do boast a superb record in European semi-finals having only lost 1 of their previous 9 semi-final first legs. Is Nicolas Pepe worth a cheeky anytime scorer bet having been involved in 9 goals in the Europa League this season including scoring in both legs of the last round.

This will be the 5th time that Villarreal and Arsenal will have met in European competition. Villarreal are so far yet to have beaten Arsenal but you feel that the situation is poised for the Spanish club to cause the English team some problems. Still, no matter how inconsistent Arsenal have been on the domestic front they still somehow manage to get the business done in Europe. I can see them managing to scrape a draw here leaving themselves with a job to complete in the second leg at home.
