StevieDay1983 Posted September 28, 2019 Author Share Posted September 28, 2019 Standard Liege vs Charleroi The Belgian First Division A matches are up again and it's a tricky one to call this week. I was tempted by the Royal Excel Mouscron game but in the end I bottled it and went for this clash between Standard Liege and Charleroi that is scheduled to kick-off at 5pm BST on Sunday afternoon from the Stade Maurice Dufrasne. Can the league leaders continue their fine start to the season? Standard Liege sit top of the pile with 18 points from their 8 league games so far. That might all have changed by kick-off with the Club Brugge waiting in the wings with a game in hand. Royal Antwerp also have a game in hand but play later on tomorrow night. Two defeats already this season suggest that former Belgian goalkeeping legend and Standard head coach Michel Preud'homme aren't invincible but the fact they've won 6 of their 8 league games shows how effective they can be. Charleroi are sitting in a comfortable 9th place with 11 points from their 7 league games. Karim Belhocine will be wanting to move on up the table and if his side can get a result here then it could take them up into the Championship Play-Off positions. Charleroi have won 3 of their last 4 matches including their last two away games. This is arguably their biggest challenge yet this season so it'll be interesting to see how they fare. Right now, Standard Liege are setting the pace. Four wins on the bounce in all competitions shows they are a team not to be messed with and with Arsenal awaiting them in the Europa League in midweek it's the perfect motivation for Preud'homme to get his players performing with starting places up for grabs. I can see a solid home win to bring an abrupt end to this positive Charleroi form.
