Flat Racing ~ Saturday May 23rd (Inc. Scoop 6)

Recommended Posts

Saturday’s Scoop 6 Races This weeks Tote Scoop 6 will start with a win fund of £75,291. Three lucky winners last week will play for a Bonus Fund of £570,740 in the 2.00 at Haydock Park which also forms the opening leg of this weeks six races. Leg 1: 2.00 Haydock Park (C4) The opening leg this week is also the Bonus race. It’s a tricky 2 mile handicap in which last year’s winner and runner up, Noble Silk and Nearly Caught do battle again. The latter has had the benefit of a race this season so may come out on top this time. I thought John Reel ran well for a long way in the Chester Cup, he’s unexposed on turf and his running style should suit this track and looks worth a go at a fair price. Totalize makes his seasonal debut and might grab a place. Selection: John Reel 14/1 William Hill (Nearly Caught) Leg 2: 2.35 Haydock Park (C4) The Silver Bowl Stakes over a mile is the second leg and all eyes will be on Brian Meehan’s runner and likely favourite Mutarakez. His target is the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot so will probably need to win here to justify those ambitions. He won at Sandown last time out and looks a very progressive sort. Storm Rock was a bit unlucky over course and distance last time out and should reverse placing’s with Gerry The Glover and rates as the main danger to Mutarakez in an interesting handicap. Selection: Mutarakez 4/1 Betfred (Storm Rock) Leg 3: 2.55 Goodwood (C4) A 7f Handicap from Goodwood comes up next and trainer Mark Johnston’s runners are always worth a second look at this track. He’s in terrific form this season and the top weight Mister Universe has already won this term. He made all at Ascot and has been raised 6lbs, which looks fair enough and could take some catching here. The Willie Haggas runner Muffri’Ha is still progressing and was a touch unlucky at Thirsk last time out. The yard is firing at the minute and this one rates as a live danger. Selection: Mister Universe 11/2 Bet365 (Muffri’Ha) Leg 4: 3.10 Haydock Park (C4) A Fillies’ Listed contest over 6f here with 14 runners declared. Edward Lynam’s Gathering Power comes over from Ireland again after running well in the Group 2 sprint at York ten days ago. She was flying at the finish that day and should be thereabouts. Another one from that race I like is Aetna from the Mick Easterby yard. She was 9th but beaten under 3 lengths, she has a 4lb penalty to carry but is the highest rated runner in the race on 104. Mick Channon’s Divine won at Windsor last time out and looks an improved filly this year and could figure in the shake up. Selection: Aetna 5/1 Betfair (Gathering Power) Leg 5: 3.45 Haydock Park (C4) The big race of the day in England, The Temple Stakes. A Group 2 sprint and it looks a very competitive renewal with almost any of the dozen runners in with some sort of chance. Goldream won the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket and that form stands out so far this season, that was his first success in Group company so maybe this is asking a bit too much? Qatar Racing who had the 1-2 last year have three runners in the line up and Hot Streak looks the best of those, he was a good third in France behind Meccas Angel recently and won this twelve months ago from Pearl Secret. Danzeno is interesting at 5f for the first time but a safer bet maybe G Force who won the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup here at Haydock last year. He probably wouldn’t want it any softer but is the class act in a tremendous race. Selection: G Force 7/1 Stan James (Hot Streak) Leg 6: 4.20 Haydock Park (RUK) The final race of the Scoop 6 this week is another sprint handicap at Haydock. A class 3 event with four places up for grabs. I don’t think there is too much in the draw but middle to high look favoured to me. Richard Fahey has 3 runners and I like both Gramercy and the improving Canyari. He was 4th at Ripon and then won by 5 lengths at Leicester last time. He’s up 10lbs for that but has Paul Hanagan in the saddle. Gramercy was 3rd at Thirsk just in front of Barkston Ash, both have decent draws and are dangers. Selection: Canyari 8/1 Coral (Gramercy)
