Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Aug 16-17 Indeed, AFC Totton are rather lucky to be still here at all. They struggled to the end of last season gamely, with a squad of decent player who hadn't been paid properly since late January. Over the summer, that squad has been redistributed across Dorset and Hants, with Poole Town a particular beneficiary (Richard Gillespie, Jamie Whisken) and their best player Mike Gosney heading for Gosport. Commendably, boss Steve Riley is staying, and they have one or two players from last season, including the excellent Nathan Shebourne who was injured for much of it, and Dave Allen, but in pre-season it has mostly been the kids - they've lost six friendlies in a row, including the last three against Lymington, Fleet Town and Sholing. On the field they look nailed on for relegation with a squad that looks Wessex League at best, and off the field they are facing a massive struggle. Debts are over £150,000, including £50,000 in crucial football debts to ex-players and staff. Unsurprisingly no one wants to take over the club so it is being run by a fans' committee. There has been a decent effort at rallying round - Riley himself raised a grand by organising a disco and a host of ex-players turned out for a fund-raising game last week - so they are clearly up for the fight. The prices, though, reflect the situation. If you ever see their opponents at 4/6, take it.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Aug 16-17 Hungerford Town at home to Hinckley United (23/20 BetVics) A strange drift in the Hungerford price I feel. All the interest on the incomers has centred on Poole Town but I'm convinced Bobby Wilkinson's side will go a touch better. They've added well to a decent squad, with the key signings being Stefan Brown and Nick Stanley with immediate experience of life a step higher, and the excellent Swindon Super pair of Josh Parsons and Ash Edenborough. Pre-season has seen some good results, though they've let in too many at the back to be fully confident just yet. Hinckley United have already lost one manager over the summer, though Stuart Storer is getting on with things on a very restricted budget (he reckons it's the smallest in the section but he probably hasn't seen Totton's). Ten friendlies in a month give a good indication of the number of triallists who've been through the door, and there have been promising signs, though nothing that adds much gambling confidence at the moment - last time out they were 3-0 down to Loughborough Dynamo before turning the game into a 5-3 win (there were many changes to both sides at HT). In the ciircumstances, it's really hard to see why Hinckley have been attracting business. I've priced Hungerford at something under Evs.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Aug 16-17 Grantham Town away at Ashton United (11/4 Marathon) Based on last season's form this is a fair price, but as I indicated in the antepost thread Gary Sucharewycz and Ian Robinson have carried out a healthy revamp of the Grantham squad. They've not only developed some talent from last season's threadbare squad, they've added some useful players, including Massiah McDonald and Michael Towey. You can't read too much into their pre-season form, but they have been organised and incisive with wins over Boston United, Grimsby Town and Lincoln City. There's a second part to this equation, too - Ashton United lost boss Danny Johnson in May, who went to Nantwich with half-a-dozen players, and then his replacement Carl Robinson in July. To be fair, the new joint team of Paul Phillips and Steve Halford have done pretty well to assemble a competitive squad that's done okay in pre-season after a ropey start. But even so, Grantham are nothing like 11/4 shots for this one. Ilkeston away at Whitby Town (13/8 Marathon) I wouldn't make Whitby Town even slight favourites for this. Darren Williams has been working hard in the summer and the best bit of business has been the signing of Adam Rundle, and the experienced Richard Pell has also joined but the squad looks no better than last season. They've looked pretty poor pre-season, with the 4-3 home defeat to Scarborough Athletic last weekend the low point. The low points at Ilkeston came a couple of seasons ago and I get the impression that Kevin Wilson is on the cusp of something good, with a young side that is brimming with talent. The signings of Chris Palmer and Aaron Webster this week add some valuable experience in defensive areas and at the other end of the pitch Kane Richards will put better defences than Whitby's to the sword. I make Ilkeston firmish favourites for this one. St Albans City away at Poole Town (2/1 Marathon) I just can't compute this price - St Albans are in competitive nick, with John Frendo in good form and the whole squad having a much more solid look about it. Poole Town have strengthened wisely over the summer and should go well, but I wouldn't set St Albans so far out in what looks like a highly competitive and free-scoring game.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Aug 16-17

great info and thanks ships for some very good priced tips. on the subject of the mess at totton didn't they have a good cup run with a televised game? wonder where all that dough went?
They did indeed - a stuffing at home by Bristol Rovers (a big-earner on the spreads for me, that one!). They also got to the play-offs that season and everything was looking rosy. I understand the real problems came when they moved stadium the season before last - they didn't actually sell the old ground for a market price then use a slice of the money to buy a purpose-built facility on cheaper land at the edge of town, coming out of the deal with a new ground that suited their needs better and a wodge of cash in the bank. That's the classic model. What happened was a swap deal with the developers - we'll give you the old stadium land if you build us a new stadium. This, I believe, was the sort of deal that Dulwich Hamlet did with Sainsburys when they moved Champion Hills a decade ago and it worked for them - they scaled down their white-elephant 25,000 capacity giant for a stadium fit for Ryman league purpose. AFC Totton's old Testwood Stadium was very Step 5-ish and with things going rather well on the pitch, the board decided to get the developers to spec out a new ground fit for Conference football. Bells and whistles were added, which didn't really impact on the outgoings as the developers were doing it all for 'free' (of course, they must have been massively up on the deal to agree to it in the first place). For the first 12 months in the new Testwood the developers had also agreed to cover the utility bills - said to be ten times the old stadium. Once again, no one at the club was checking and when the one-year deal ended they suddenly had huge bills to pay, with on-the-field performances meaning that crowds and revenue in hadn't really risen, and there was now a legacy of some ridiculous wages to players under contracts put together when no one was looking at what needed to be paid in 12 months. The party stopped.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Aug 16-17 Adding a bit of fuel to the Stourbridge fire, in case anyone doesn't know they have taken Ryan Rowe back to his spiritual home on loan from Kidderminster. As a Harriers fan I'm a bit disappointed Rowe has not been kept with the main squad which is now heavily reliant on Malbon and Gash. Last season Rowe was the catalyst for Kidderminster's first win with a 2nd half hat-trick at Cambridge United coming off the bench, and he was also credited with the goal (of many) of the season at home to Barrow. Rowe should be raring to go against Totton and should provide a real cutting edge at Southern League level. I think Coral's 4/5 about Stourbridge HT/FT is decent value.

Very good thought, and just to point out that Marathon are going 11/10 Stourbridge HT/FT.
