The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge

After a 2 year hiatus I began playing Online Poker again around 3 months ago. When I stopped playing in May 2011 I had kept records of wins and losses on a blog, and had never had a losing year since I began online in 2007. Within the 4 years I played I probably had no more than 2 losing Months (to my best recollection) - playing a mixture of micro cash games, freerolls and value added tourneys (of which there seemed to be a lot more than there is now :\) I thought playing Poker was just like 'Riding a Bike', in that once you've got rid of the stabilisers everything is easy forever - However I've been back 3 Months and have yet to post a winning month:(, so either pokers changed a great deal, or I've lost some of my ; Skill-Luck-Good Fortune-Concentration-Desire or combination of 1 or more of those (of course I obviously know it's rigged as well:p) So I thought maybe if I begin recording and telling people how bad I'm playing that I might concentrate, or have more desire to succeed,to avoid heaping more embarrassment upon myself :$. I've also luckily been able to supplement my Poker losses with a bit of Betting, and Advantage play - so I'll record those within my challenge as well, to stop me ending up like a Charity case if the poker doesn't turn the corner - I'll try and post the betting and advantage play selections up prior, so I can't appear to only be selecting the winning bits -and wherever possible I'll post my Poker exploits on here also to encourage comment (or abuse) as people see fit :ok So let the 'Ride' commence .....

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge It's getting harder every year, even at the micro's, dread to think what it's like at $1/$2 or what ever the highest I used to play at was. I play a lot of Omaha hi/lo these days for four reasons. A. you get 4 cards B. There two pots so you have twice the chance of winning C. You get lots of vip points etc. to get into half decent freerolls D Every one else in the world is crap at it. Good to see you both back, all the best.

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge Good luck back at the tables :D sounds like I just missed the boat for all the super value tourneys where could easily find excellent profits , indeed I still find the casino's are softer than most of the micro's maybe even casino regulars don't read as much strategy as micro stakes players sat at the virtual tables. made a note of your comment Glceud tried play a bit of PLO8 cash couple of years ago and despite being pretty awful at cash game found this pretty comfortable and had a ridic winrate albeit over a very small sample size (not sure why don't play them anymore :unsure)

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge It looks more like arbing than advantage play. Advantage play used to apply to abusing casino bonuses which is near impossible these days though the odd one does still happen. Betfred offered a £10 cash return for a £10 loss on some slots last month, If you won you withdrew if you lost you got your cash back, lovely stuff. They have changed the t&c now so don't bother. In the early days of casinos bonuses were withdrawable and the turnovers were so low it was hard to lose, think I only lost once. It could be using free bets and laying them on the exchanges.

Oops premature send button push.. Was also going to add that there are still some useful added value games out there, but value to hours required grinding ratio is pretty low, so only worthwhile if multitabling or whilst watching tv etc. Currently doing my own $0 challenge which i will blog eventually and found the following useful to get things started without depositing: Ongame Interpoker daily $50 freeroll Betsafe daily $100 freeroll (but Inter is better value in terms of numbers, hours played etc) Redbet adhoc freerolls $200-500, some also on boss skin Ipoker Boyle $1 no lose ($1.05 including fee, $1 back if don't cash) Boyle $5 no lose ($5.05 incl fee, $5 back, but only pays top 4 so you will possible lose a few 25cents before cashing one) Blackbelt $1 no lose (thurs) # Boyle need to be level 2+ VIP, $1 daily, $5 tues I think. Blackbelt need to be yellow belt VIP (have prev made a deposit) Also I think already mentioned.. Winamax Unlimited micro win sngs in a similar vein to the Grosvenors 321 giveaways, $0.25 micro mtt's available once built up sufficient sng wins. Mags Anything & everything PokerPlayer & WPTmag related

Good luck matey :hope btw... what is 'Advantage Play'?
Along line of glceud said - in the example last night the bookmaker offered a free £10 bet if you staked a £10 bet.(on US Racing) I bet the £10 and laid on exchange for minimal loss (actually no loss as the prices evolved) then with the 'Free' £10 I bet and laid for a small profit - i.e bet £10 to return £90 and the laid £9 to lose £79.50 - as it happened the 9/1 shot won so I made £10.50 profit - but even if it had lost I would have still made £9 (less commission) from the 'Winning' lay on the exchange. Similar to Poker there is not as much value as there used to be in this, but they still appear around 2 or 3 times a week. I'll tilt them slighly to get more profit from the result I fancy and maybe just no profit or loss from the outcome I don't fancy Theres one tonight in the England v Scotland match, whereby you can guarantee a profit whatever the result - If England win I make +£7 appx If England win by a certain score I make +£28 appx If England fail to win I make +£1 appx

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge As Ed says its getting harder all the time to make money out of poker. The last 18 months of so have been pretty woeful for me, with the odd good result thrown in to keep me interested :D About three years ago I was regularly playing and cashing in Big $55 on stars - I've probably played it three or four times this year, with little success. Now the $11 tournaments are more suited to my playing level :\ So...about three weeks I ago I signed up to a training site (I won't advertise it here in case it offends, but if anyone wants to know which one drop me a PM). I've only watched about half a dozen videos so far, but they've definitely helped make me focus more, and concentrate on what I'm doing a bit more. So far I'd say its worth the £20 a month cost, and hopefully I'll get the chance to see more videos in the next few weeks to get some more tips. Not had any deep runs yet, but hoping they're going to come :hope Have barely played any live games this year (mainly due to not being able to qualify for any), so have just booked myself 10 nights in Vegas next month just to enjoy some sun, and play a few live games while I'm there - hopefully that will help when I get back to the daily grind. Anyway, it sounds like you found other ways to keep your bankroll growing, so ease yourself back into the poker, and most of all enjoy it :ok

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge Worked Late last night meant too late to get any games in, and today I resisted the 2 Paddys $10 Added Value tournies - until the Poker Roll increases - and just played the Pantsdown Freeroll, and the WH Sidegames freeroll. No cash in either, lost a flip TT v AK in the Pantsdown and went out 92/237 - Ace came on the River, but no problems with getting the money in when I did. Went out of WH early. Not much on the Betting front either over the last 2 Days - won a bit Yesterday, and lost a few pence today on a couple of Bandit offers. There will definitely be some movement in the Betting Side over the Weekend as the Premiership Kicks off - and I'll probably have a couple of mug bets on the Football and Horses. Poker I've had an Invite to the Mini Masters tourney on PKR - although I've no cash on there to take a Rebuy or Addon - so see how that fares. I've also updated my Poker Tracker 3 software and got the HUD working - which gives me a little more of a handle on the opponents styles. Although I see theres now a Poker Tracker 4 on the scene, and the PT3 will probably no longer be supported :(. I'll see how I fare with PT3 before I invest another £40 in PT4. I may try a bit of Micro Cash later to see how I fare with that and the HUD - I'll add any Profit or Loss from that onto tomorrows scores Running Totals (Day 4) Poker +1.19 (-) Betting +40.03 (-0.77)

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge I've just realised I'm turning this into a promotion for not playing poker but trying online gambling ..... so I'll just report Poker related Bankroll movements on here and have copied posts so far onto a new blog (address in signature) where I'll continue reporting on both gambling and poker profits ... Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge Had an Ok last few days, been playing some micro cash on New Betfair to pick up my VIP Level and work through a couple of Side Bet Offers. Originally started slowly, but yesterday managed to turn profits on both tables I was playing - which puts my cash winnings into overall profit from start of challenge. Played some more cheapies and freerolls - small cashes in two of these. Last night I made my first final table since start of the challenge in a 58 runner Bankroll Booster on Betfair - although went out in 9th with 8 paid :(. But I was pleased with the way I played throughout, I've now managed to find the 'Fold' button when I feel I'm behind instead of having a 'F**k it I'm calling mentality. Went out when Blinds were large with a semi bluff push against a player who was lying in about 5th of 9 - I pushed with JT and he called for over half his stack with 23 off !! course he hit a 3 on the flop and I missed my over cards and straight draw. But that's just luck and don't think we can account for that, just brush myself down and carry on doing what I believe is correct

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge Another night showing a steady improvement, went out in the Sky Freeroll early - can't quite work out the tactics for the timed events, also went out early in the $1500 William Hill Sidegames Weekly, top pair v overpair. Then in the Paddy Pantsdown final I had a Top 20 finish out of 250+ Runners for a $9 Cash - played well, picked my spots well. Went out SB v BB with a push Q8s v A4o

Re: The Just Like Riding and (falling off) a Bike Challenge Another good night last night won a buy in within 10 minutes on micro cash , whilst waiting for Tourneys to start. Free $10 Token found in my gala Account which I used on the £5k Gtd , lost a race with AK v QQ and never really got chipped up again finished mid division. Also went out mid division in the PP Game, was ahead pre flop on the last hand, but tbh was pretty card dead most of the tourney. I did however get my first cash in a Sky Timed freeroll and also did well in the Gala 20pp freeroll finishing 2nd of 180+ for just over £30. Seems as though the bit of patience and a little more aggression when involved is working OK. Also while ever I'm playing Freerolls or Low Buy Ins im not going to be getting to far behind each month
