Bathtime For Rupert got a reaction from Hedge in Racing Chat - Saturday 5th September
    12.45 Ascot - 1pt e/w Siam Fox @ 12/1 Hills
I think those with a run are beatable so chancing a newcomer here and I like the prospects of Richard Hannon's runner. He's the only half brother to the high class horse Fox Champion (who coincidentally also runs today) and is bred to be smart at 2 with Prince of Lir's stud career off to a strong start. The yard can get one ready to go first time out so I think he looks a fair price here.
    1.45 Haydock - 1pt e/w Kinross @ 17/2 Bet365
Backed this one in the 2000 Guineas when running a sound enough race without being able to muster up the speed to finish anywhere other than midfield but was far from disgraced on his first outing of the season and ran okay in France last time. Does need to step up but drops in grade here and his only previous experience with ease in the ground was when a very impressive debut winner. Both his sire, Kingman, and his dam enjoyed soft conditions so this could help today and in calmer waters could get back in the groove.
    1.55 Ascot - 1pt e/w Concierge @ 17/2 Hills
Quite a few of these look handicapped to their best but Concierge has run off higher marks in the past and got a deserved win at Bath last time out over 5f on soft. Was convincing that day, putting his extra stamina to good use as he stays 6f no problem and I think it could be a similar story here. There looks lots of pace on here and I think this one can come through late to challenge if getting the splits. This will be harder than last time but with question marks over some of the others and their handicap marks, this is one who could eek out some more improvement as is fairly unexposed over the trip.
    2.00 Kempton - 1pt win Mighty Gurkha @ 7/1 Bet365
Hasn't done much wrong in his career to date and was a mightily impressive winner on his only start on the all-weather to date. Can write off his effort in France last time when very slowly away and bumped into what looks a very smart horse in Method two starts back. Has the best form in the book to me and whilst others are more unexposed, I'll take the proven form at 7/1 here.
    2.30 Ascot - 1pt e/w Look Around @ 12/1 Bet365
The handicapper has relented a bit on this one and she appeals now off a mark of 98 with a further 5lbs taken off by her jockey. Has plenty of form in group races that make this look a fair enough mark and has had excuses when not quite running up to it this season - needing her first run back, outstayed having travelled well over 1m2f next time and then ran well here last time where it paid to come from off the pace - still finished a creditable 3rd having led briefly at the furlong pole and with a more patient ride here I think 10/1 could look a big price.
    2.50 Ascot - 1pt e/w Just in Time @ 12/1 Bet365
Bounced back from a lengthy absence with two good runs this season over 2 miles but shaped as if a stiff 1m6f would be more up his street. Is only 1lb higher than when winning a good race back in 2018 having displayed a very progressive profile. Looks as if just as good here and has gone well on previous starts on soft. The 2f shorter trip today can be the key and see the progression shown a couple of years ago continue.
    3.25 Haydock - The Tin Man @ 14/1 Bet365
Has a bit to find on form but went well last time out when narrowly beaten and will relish the softer conditions here. Has an excellent record in this race - an unlucky second to Hello Youmzain last year, a winner on deep ground in 2018 and a good 3rd in a hot renewal won by Harry Angel in 2017. Never run a bad race at Haydock so a good chance this will be his best run of the season here and looks an each-way chance at a healthy price.

    2.20 Thirsk - 1pt e/w Fantail @ 10/1 Bet365
Headstrong sort who has plenty of ability but needs to settle better to showcase it - the hood returns today having thrown away any chance last time by pulling hard from the front and hopefully that will help conserve some energy here. Did run okay in the hood 2 starts back behind two nice sorts (winner now rated 14lbs higher) and only backed out of it late on. This less demanding track should play to its strengths and hopefully can be involved at the finish with a more settled run.
    2.30 Ascot - 1pt e/w Ballyconneely Bay @ 14/1 Bet365
John Quinn's runner shaped with promise on his debut at Pontefract over 5f, keeping on from the back from a wide draw which is never ideal around that track. It wasn't a bad race either and should improve plenty for the experience here and the extra furlong. He's related to some decent types and is a full brother to a smart filly who ended up rated in the 90s so there's plenty to suggest he can be useful on bloodlines too. Open race and he's an attractive price so appeals to me.
    3.30 Thirsk - 1pt e/w Club Wexford @ 33/1 Bet365
Seems a very big price here given he's bounced back with good runs the last twice, staying on from the rear despite failing to get a clear run and is well handicapped on some of his old form. Conditions suit and so long as he's good to go, looks like he's coming back into form and able to put in a good effort if getting the splits here.
    3.40 Ascot - 1pt e/w On To Victory @ 8/1 Bet365
Was an excellent third at York on his first run after a break, staying on behind quite a nice type and should strip fitter today. Has plenty of old form that would see him go very well off this sort of mark and the slightly easier ground conditions will certainly suit and help bring the leaders back to him in the closing stages. Looks a sound each-way bet as is typically consistent and seems sure to be running on so long as this hasn't come too soon for him.
    4.35 Thirsk - 1pt win Venturous @ 13/2 Bet365
Has been unlucky in a few runs this season in better races and today looks his best opportunity yet - down another couple of pounds in the handicap and eased in grade having shaped well last time out. Wasn't beaten that far when travelling well but the first four in the race were up there throughout and they just couldn't peg them back from the rear. This contest should suit and if getting the breaks, looks capable of picking them up late.
    5.05 Thirsk - 1pt e/w Athollblair Boy @ 16/1 Bet365
Backed this one last time but he just couldn't go the 5f gallop that day despite finishing with some credit and will relish the return to 6f today. A big field will really suit his closing style and he's back to a fair mark now with a further 7lbs taken off his back. Competitive race but this is a consistent type and I think he can go well at a price.
    5.20 Ascot - 1pt e/w Gloves Lynch @ 14/1 Bet365
Ran too badly to be true back over in Ireland last time and showed promise prior to that including when an eyecatcher at Newcastle - staying on from an uncompromising position in a race where it proved tricky to come from behind. I'm sure there's a handicap in him off this mark and conditions should suit with a likely fast pace to help too. Clearly a question mark after that last run but it often pays to forgive a horse an off day and I'll do that here.

    12.50 Newcastle - 2pts win Zebulon @ 7/1 Bet365
Very well handicapped horse now who has run several good races around Newcastle with this probably being his ideal course and distance. Dropped down to a basement mark of 50 after some lesser efforts on turf recently but has been running in better races too and wasn't disgraced last time out. Ruth Carr's horses had a very quiet time but have been slowly coming to the boil recently and did have a recent winner. That's often the time to keep on the right side of her horses and now back to ideal conditions, this one can hopefully take advantage of that lowly mark.
    1.00 Salisbury - 2pts win Amazon Princess @ 9/2 Bet365
The market support is all for Blessed here but I'd sooner have the horse who is sure to relish the step up to a mile in Amazon Princess at a now attractive price of 9/2. Did well to win last time here over 7f after stumbling at the start and the runner-up has subsequently gone well since off a higher mark. This filly is sure to enjoy the extra furlong here on run style and pedigree and has only edged up the handicapper so ought to go very close here.
    1.35 Salisbury - 1pt e/w Biotic @ 10/1 Hills
Was outpaced and never involved here last time but nothing came from off the pace that day and better can be expected today given his typical consistent profile. Is off a winning mark, conditions suit and the likely strong gallop can help this fast finisher in an apprentice race. Yard is in good nick to boot so expecting him to bounce back here.
    3.10 Salisbury - 0.5pts e/w Alicestar @ 25/1 Bet365
Those at the head of the market have obvious claims but of those unexposed, I thought Alicestar could improve plenty for her debut success at Yarmouth and go well at a price. Defied greenness that day to get on top of the odds on favourite who looks to be an 80 horse on evidence so far (won easily yesterday at Bath) and the pair were 7 lengths clear. David Simcock's debutants usually come on for the run so this one looks a potential 90+ horse if building on the debut win so will chance at a big price.
    3.35 Newcastle - 1pt e/w My Brother Mike @ 12/1 Bet365
You can draw a line through this one's last effort when pulling far too hard over 1m4f but should find the return to 1m2f helpful in that respect and still shaped as if in form that day despite fading late on. Previously had won two in a row quite readily and remains on a decent handicap mark on previous form so a double figure price for a horse in form and conditions to suit just seems too generous for me to ignore.
    3.40 Salisbury - 1pt e/w Star in the Making @ 22/1 Bet365
Is a course and distance winner and has shown some decent form over 6f but has had excuses lately. Didn't seem to handle Pontefract last time out from a wide draw and was outstayed over 7f on its two previous runs. Back to 6f here today off a fair enough mark and I think it's worth an each-way poke with conditions ideal again.

David Simcock's debutants usually come on for the run so this one looks a potential 90+ horse if building on the debut win so will chance at a big price.

    12.40 Uttoxeter - 0.5pts e/w Tikanite @ 66/1 Bet365
Bit of a punt to start the day given this one hasn't run for over 1,000 days but remains only a 9 year old and clearly had some ability when last seen which would suit these conditions. Obviously likely to need the run you'd imagine but in a race where the 5th favourite is 66s generally, 100s in places , it's worth chancing with 3 places on offer. Some of those ahead of this one in the market have something to prove too so if a couple underperform, it wouldn't be impossible for Tikanite to sneak into the frame.
    1.15 Uttoxeter - 1pt e/w Munstead Moonshine @ 33/1 Bet365
Only modest on the flat but has actually shaped better since going hurdling with a couple of decent enough efforts the last twice. The form of the race he ran in last time wasn't bad and he had little chance at the weights but finished off pretty well having been outpaced and shaped as if the extra couple of furlongs here would help. Bred to stay pretty well so this could unlock a bit more and goes handicapping off a lowly mark so in a weak race will have a go at a big price.
    1.50 Uttoxeter - 1pt e/w Veiled Secret @ 12/1 Bet365
I think this one has a big chance today having got a run under his belt this year when running well but fading late on as if in need of the outing. Plenty of decent enough hurdling and chasing form last season and had excuses on a few of its defeats (soft ground, bit tongue, 3rd to two well handicapped horses who thrived since). Conditions look spot on, he's fit now and can go close.
    2.00 Bath - 1pt win Alba Del Sole @ 5/1 Bet365
Looks lots of pace on here which is always likely in an apprentice race and that will play into the hands of Alba Del Sole who has been unlucky not to get a win to its name recently, finishing 2nd on a number of occasions without having much luck in the run. Conditions look spot on here, had had excuses the last twice and can come through late to score.
    3.00 Bath - 1pt win We're Reunited @ 8/1 Bet365
Longstanding maiden but has shown glimmers of form and is interesting down the weights, back on decent ground and down to 5f for the first time with blinkers on. Has shown up for a long way in a few contests over 6f this season and needs to prove its speed over this trip but the blinkers can sharpen it up I hope and in a race where there are a few who aren't that strong in a finish, hopefully this one's stamina for slightly further can play into its hands.
    3.30 Bath - 1pt e/w Trusty Rusty @ 16/1 Hills
Was always likely to need handicaps to come into his own and enters this sphere off a lowly mark having shown some promise in its most recent two starts, staying on but ultimately having no chance against better rivals. Didn't have a great run through at Chepstow last time over 7f when losing its place before keeping on again and definitely needs at least a mile so the return to this trip is a plus. Should be more in its comfort zone today and has been nibbled in the market this morning.

    1.00 Ripon - 1pt e/w Orchid Rose @ 25/1 Bet365
With three places on offer here, I'll take an each-way chance on Orchid Rose who displayed great speed on debut at Doncaster before fading into 4th place that day. Was nibbled in the market at big odds for a yard who wouldn't have many 2yo winners and showed plenty of promise when pouring it on from the front to be four lengths clear a couple of furlongs out. Got tired late on but ought to come on for that and is well drawn at a track that should suit, with a good chance of bagging the rail from stall 7. Has a fair amount to find but could make the first three if backing up the promise of her debut effort.
    1.45 Kempton - 1pt e/w Looktothelight @ 9/1 Bet365
This one has lots of in and out form but crucially returns to the all-weather where its best form has been and that's no surprise given his pedigree - very much bred to be best on artificial surfaces and shaped with promise on a couple of all-weather runs. Bled from the nose when well beaten at Lingfield so that can be ignored but was 2nd to a 90+ rated horse at Southwell the time before when ultimately having no chance at the weights and ran okay in a hot novice at Kempton previously. Conditions suit, dropped in the weights and been some market support already today.
    2.00 Ripon - 1pt win Delph Crescent @ 5/1 Bet365
Has been coming down the weights for some poor efforts but has had excuses and this represents an easier contest today. Can draw a line through his run at Catterick last time when setting a fierce gallop on soft ground over 1m4f, a trip that he doesn't stay anyway in my opinion so no shock that he weakened out of it that day and similarly prior to that. These conditions suit, the track should help too and he's off a decent mark. Reckon with a more conservative ride he can bounce back.
    2.30 Ripon - 1pt e/w Frankelio @ 8/1 Bet365
Was well held in the end at Pontefract last time but the 10 length winner was clearly on a going day and this horse still ran creditably. Won at that track three starts back before not quite able to get involved here two starts back but that came in a substantially better race than this and he remains off a winnable mark. Soft ground no bother either and down in grade represents a decent each-way bet at 9/1.
    2.45 Kempton - 1pt win Twentysharesofgrey @ 13/2 Hills
Been mildly progressive and was set a very difficult task on handicap debut where it paid to be on the front end here and this one was kept right out the back. Kept on well ultimately for a distant second but the race was totally against her and gets a better opportunity here with another run under its belt - ought to go close with conditions suitable.
    3.00 Ripon - 2pts win Mustaqbal @ 4/1 Bet365
A lot to like about Michael Dods' runner here as he's in form, well handicapped and today gets his ideal conditions. The ground will be drying up but should still have enough cut in it to make this a test at the trip and that will play into the hands of Mustaqbal. Finished well the last twice including in a higher grade but the ground was too quick to be seen to best effect. The leaders will come back easier under these conditions and he should go very close.
