  1. Muguruza - Andreescu

My call for today is Muguruza to win @ ~1.7 (unibet).

Spaniard looks to be on fire now. First of all, she finally succeeded to beat, 5-6 games ago, her frightening opponent with big serve - Yastremska (a type of player with powerful shot but not very good on long rallies). Yesterday she won over Bertens (a type of player with not very powerful shot but very good on rallies). I think her morale is up and healthy and she can fight any type of player right now.

A very important thing is that Muguruza is a very good returner. That should work great against Andreescu's mediocre serves.

If Muguruza does not have a new morale breakdown for some reason, I think she can easily dispatch the Canadian.

When youngsters like Andreescu hit a patch of form, they're usually really hard to stop and they usually give up only once they run out of mental stamina, which Andreescu seems to have plenty of. Wang is going to beat her if she doesn't show up, but I don't fancy her chances if she does. If I had to choose who to bet on, I'd probably say Wang at the odds, but, if there's value, it's probably only very slight.

I also have doubts about how good is Wang against players with a strong shot (as Andreescu is). I just remember a past year game of Wang against Yastremska and the chinese just could not do much against those strong shots.

  3. Wang - Andreescu

I don't know why Andreescu is considered the favorite in this match. Yes, she plays pretty well but most of her opponent in last matches were mediocre players: Voegele, Begu, Cibulkova (out of form)...

On the other side Wang has been playing a very good tennis the last half of the year, beating such players as Muguruza, Mertens, Pliskova, Svitolina...

Of course the game may go either way but I think the odds should be more equilibratet than ±1.66 for Andreescu and ±2.20 for Wang (local bookmaker).

Other ideas on this? I would give a better chance to Wang than to Andreescu in this game.

  4. WTA Dubai. Muguruza - Yastremska

    Muguruza to win @2.17 (Betano)

I thing Muguruza has good chances to win if she keeps her morale up and focuses on the game. Yes, Yastremska has a great shot but she is very emotionally unstable sometimes (yes, Muguruza as well :) ). I've seen her doing a lot of double errors and Muguruza, being in a good day, might penalise her for it.

It will be the 5th appearance of the Spaniard in Dubai, which means she likes this tournament and will take it seriously.

I don't see Yastremska going with the 3rd win over Muguruza.

  5. Caen - Strasbourg

Both teams to score @2.15 (Betano) / Over 1.5 @1.55 (Betano) / Both teams to score and over 2.5 @3.15 (Betano)

I expect this game to be a multi-goal game because:

    • Caen it in danger zone and should give it all to get something from this game. I've been hunting "Caen to score" for a couple of games and, statistically, it should happen some day. Today, being a home game, it should finally happen.
    • Strasbourg scores much for League 1. They have scored 40 goals which is above the average. With such a team as Caen, I expect them to score at least once.
    • Their last game finished 2:2
  6. Real Madrid - Girona

Both to score at 1.91 (Betano) / Both to score and over 2.5 at 2.08 (Betano)

First of all both teams need to win. RM to keep the close position behind Barcelona and Atletico. Girona to move away from the relegation zone. So there won't be any motivation lack from both sides.

Why do I think both teams are going to score?

    • RM to score because they are a much qualitative team that needs to win and plays at home.
    • RM to score because Girona's defence seems holey. They conceded 31 goals in their last 16 games. So, 16 games without a clean-sheet.
    • Girona to score because, even if they concede a lot, they score as well almost in every match. They did not score however in last 2 games and I expect a goal from them today.
    • Girona to score because Stuani is the 5th top scorer in La Liga.
    • Girona to score because they have nothing to lose on the road against such a team as RM.
    • Girona to score because RM might be a little bit tired after the Champions League game.
    • Girona to score because they score in all the games against Real.

Long story short, I think RM will take their win but will concede at least a goal. Something like 3:1, 3:2. Let it be an entertaining match with a lot of goals.

  7. I think it's a big mistake to bet on the well ranked players in such ATP 250 competitions. I think they just come to play the first game, to get a couple of $$$ (travel for free and visit the city) and a small amount of points. Basilashvili, Wawrinka... awful. Either it's a motivation issue or they gain more from fixing the games that from actually playing and winning.

I think I have more chances to guess a combination of 3 soccer draws than a ATP 250 game :(

I'd go with them in at least ATP 500 and up...

  8. Does anybody have information about Wawrinka's motivation in Sofia ATP 250?

He will play again Marius Copil (#56) and 1.5 for Wawrinka looks really good. Copil does not look to be in good shape 1 games won out of 4 in 2019. Wawrinka played against better opponents in 2019 (Kachanov, Bautista Agut, Raonic..) and won 3 games out of 5.

I found some infos that Wawrinka is not going to participate at Davis Cup because he wants to focus on his ranking rise. He also mentioned at the press conference that he is in good shape now, comparing with 2018 at the same tournament.

I think that Stan is a generally much better player and has more weapons than Marius Copil (whose the only weapon seems to be his 1st serve). The only thing I'm afraid of is his motivation to move on in an ATP 250 level competition.

    Anyway,

    ATP 250 Sofia (Bulgaria)

    Marius Copil - Stan Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka to win at 1.50 (Betano)

  9. WTA - SINGLES: St. Petersburg (Russia), hard (indoor) - 1/16-finals

    Azarenka Victoria    -    Gasparyan Margarita

    Azarenka Victoria @ 1.83 - 2.00

I expect Azarenka to win because

    • Azarenka (51) is higher in ranking than Gasparyan (81)
    • Azarenka won more hardcourt games (percentage-wise) in 2018 (6/12) than Gasparyan (8/24)
    • Both are russian speakers so no one will feel a foreigner (still advantage for Gasparyan because of her residence in Russia)
    • Odds on Azarenka decreases on most of the bookmakers
    • I haven't seen Gasparyan's last games but, as I know, she had a knee injury at the end of last year. Probably it won't influence a lot, but still, good to know.
  10. WTA Hua Hin (Thailand), hard

    Minella Mandy - Zheng Saisai

    Zheng Saisai @ 1.48 - 1.59

I expect Zheng to take her first 2019 win.

    • Zheng (24 years) is younger than Minella (33 years)
    • Zheng (42) is higher in ranking than Minella (101)
    • Zheng (39 games in 2018) plays much on on hardcourts than Minella (5 games in 2018)
    • Thailand is much closer to Zheng than to Minella
    • It seems that odds for Zheng decreases on most of the bookmakers

Of course Minella may still win this but there are lot of arguments that speak in favor of the chinese.
