Due to the favourite-longshot bias I think you will struggle to make any money backing longshots.

I think this was the first racing book I bought. It recorded the performance of the maximum rated (13 points) over the course of a year and it showed a reasonable profit. I checked it once over a number of following years and needless to say it showed a loss. If only racing was that easy !
-
Picking the top prizemoney race of the day is a bit of a random selection protection. Normally the top rated race may be a class 3 or 4 race. Whilst on a quality card at Royal Ascot most of the races would be class 1 or 2. I can understand the logic of concentrating on class 1 races but not the best race on a particular day.

I would argue that they are not a complete waste of time. If the average POI is -23% then a return of -48% for horses wearing a hood 1st time is significant.
I do agree though that you need to dig deeper to find an edge, there are no easy ways to make a profit in this game.

Thanks, also looks like horses wearing head gear for the 1st time should be avoided. I must admit I don't like a selection to be wearing head-gear.
-
Thanks for that, doesn't seem to make much difference then. Out of interest, where do you get your data from?

Thanks. I did have a look at this but I was also after historical data to do some testing and I don't think this was available. I ended up using DATAFORM for the historical data but it is quite expensive (about £10 per week).

In comparison I spend about the same amount of money for the service I use and that includes the downloading of spreadsheets with all the days runners and an whole array of info to boot.
As for recording one's bets, I find a spreadsheet to be perfectly feasible and it only takes a few minutes to input the data.
I use a spreadsheet to produce my bets so it's quite an easy task to add the results to this.
Out of interest what service do you use to get the data for the days runners etc.

One golden rule that everyone has missed. Probably the most important too.
Always use a staking plan.
I've been betting for over 30 years and have not found anything better than level stakes.

-
If my cumulative profit has reached a new high at the end of a week then I will increase my base stake by £1.
My original base stake in October 16 was £10, it is now £54.
-
I seem to recall reading somewhere that, contrary to popular belief, horses do not perform better on their 1st run after being gelded. Does anybody have any data to prove / disprove this?
I don't think I'd be very co-operative if someone had done this to me !
-
BH, I'm surprised that you have thrown the towel in on this. I think you have had bad runs before but they then recovered.
My own each way system had a losing run of 223 points over 2 months. I was beginning to lose faith but stuck with it because I believed in the logic of the system and in the following 3 weeks I made a profit of 275 points.
-
Thanks for the explanation.
I must admit I am always dubious about staking plans.
I don't think that long term a staking plan can turn a losing system at level stakes into a profitable system.
I suspect that at some stage you will have a losing run that will wipe out all your profits but I am open to be proved wrong.
