Easyjet to Manchester, stay there one night then travel up. Sunday coming back will be a bitch (trains not so quick so an early start). It's a possibility ...... have to see how things are after the holiday. It's still pretty expensive (about £100 return), but unless you live near Stansted it will take you just as long going via plane once you take into account getting to the airport and through security and blah.
