A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm)

Recommended Posts

Queensland Roar v Central Coast Mariners Early game this week for the A League when the Roar take on the in form Mariners on Thursday night. Date: Thursday September 6 Kick-off (local time): 8.00pm Venue: Suncorp Stadium Radio coverage: Coast FM 96.3FM (Central Coast) Head-to-head Six league meetings: Queensland - 1 win, 5 draws Previous meeting Central Coast 1 Queensland 3 (Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium, Pre-Season Cup final round, August 2007) Past five results Queensland: Win - Loss - Win - Draw - Draw Central Coast: Win - Loss - Loss - Win - Win Analysis High-flying Central Coast Mariners can extend their early lead at the top of the table to seven points with victory over Queensland Roar in the opening match of the third round at Suncorp Stadium. Coach Lawrie McKinna said after his side's 3-0 thrashing of Wellington Phoenix last Friday that their first-half display was the finest 45 minutes of football he's overseen since the inception of the Hyundai A-League. Fit-again striker Nik Mrdja was involved in everything, scoring twice and laying on the third for Adam Kwasnik as his developing forward partnership with ex-Sydney hotshot Sasho Petrovski continues to blossom. But McKinna, already minus captain Alex Wilkinson because of a knee injury, will also have to make do without Dean Heffernan whose eye-catching form at left-back has earned him a Qantas Socceroos call-up and goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.Damien Brown is a contender to replace Heffernan in defence while Matthew Trott could earn only his second Hyundai A-League start in place of Vukovic. Greg Owens, however, misses out altogether. For this season's sole Thursday night clash, Queensland Roar coach Frank Farina is again forced to reshuffle his troops with Stuart McLaren the latest player to be handed a suspension after two bookable offences in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle last Sunday. McLaren, who played in central midfield against the Jets, wore the captain's armband in the absence of Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto but will now sit out this week's clash with the Mariners. Moore and Tiatto return after bans but the former Leicester City captain will be walking on eggshells with a further one-match suspension set to be activated if he receives a card of any colour against the league leader. Andrew Packer came through the entire 90 minutes at EnergyAustralia Stadium unscathed in what was his first match of the season after hamstring trouble, but picked up a calf injury in training which could sideline him for a month. Versatile Korean Hyuk-Su Seo is available after a two-match ban but Sasa Ognenovski, who rolled both ankles in training before the Jets match, will not be risked with a long trip to Perth to come in round four. Ante Milicic, one of Queensland's three goalscorers from its 3-1 victory over the Mariners in the Pre-Season Cup, returns to the squad.

Central Coast Mariners Squad: 1. Matthew TROTT (gk) 2. Matt SIMON 6. Andre GUMPRECHT 7. John HUTCHINSON 9. Nik MRDJA 10. Tom PONDELJAK 11. Damien BROWN 13. Tony VIDMAR 15. Andrew CLARK 16. Impending stats, facts and trivia: This match sees the re-uniting - on opposite sides - of two of the most prominent Qantas Socceroos of the past decade: Craig Moore (Roar) and Tony Vidmar (Mariners). The two former Qantas Socceroo captains, both likely to be named as captain's for Thursday's Hyundai A-League fixture, have played as team-mates well over a hundred times in the past, including 24 matches together with the Qantas Socceroos, and many more during a stint at Glasgow Rangers where they were both at between 1997 and 2002.

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Local Central Coast trio promoted for Roar match Damien Brown, Andrew Clark and Andrew Redmayne, three iconic starlets of the Central Coast football scene, have been promoted to the Central Coast Mariners squad to take on the Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow night. In the absence of Dean Heffernan, Bradley Porter and Danny Vukovic, each of whom are unavailable by virtue of their involvement with the Qantas Socceroos and the Qantas Under 23’s respectively, Brown, Clark and Redmayne have been promoted to the Mariners’ 15-man line up that will be hoping to notch their first ever Hyundai A-League win over their orange-clad counterparts. While Brown became the first Central Coast born and raised player to notch 50 appearances in the final round of the 2007 Pre-Season Cup, Clark, another foundation Mariners squad member, is one appearance away from his half-century of caps for his hometown club. Qantas Young Socceroo goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne has earned his first Mariners squad berth, and will compete with fellow local product Matthew Trott for starting honours at Suncorp Stadium. Aside from Heffernan, Porter and Vukovic, the Mariners will be without injured captain Alex Wilkinson for their fourth Hyundai A-League trip to Queensland, where they will be hoping to claim their third consecutive win of the new season.

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) The only 4 matches played between these two at Suncorp have finished in a draw (1 x 0-0.....2 x 1-1.....1 x 2-2). 6 out of 8 games this season have been draws-CC the only team not to have had a draw so far this season. I think it might be time for them to come to the "Draw Party". Therefore, my money is going on the Draw @ 3.35 (Betfair). O/U 2.5 goals too hard to split, if pushed I would say under. Godd Luck all. p.s. Thanks for the great info once again beejayville.

Shots On Target Goals Shots per Goal 0-45 45-90 Per Match Avg Min. GF every
Queensland 44 23 3 14.7 100% 0% 2 15 45 min.
Mariners 44 14 4 11.0 33% 66% 1.5 63 60 min.
Both of these teams are leading the League in shots on goal, with Queensland the more accurate, but the Mariners have one more goal. The Roar have scored all their goals in the first half this season, so there if they are not in front at half time then on their stats this season they won't win, although it is only 2 weeks of stats. The Mariners have been on fire around goal and they have also been clinical in their finishing. CURRENT ODDS
1 X 2
Queensland 2-45 3-20 2-80 CC Mariners
The Mariners are great odds considering they are the only team to have won a game this season, and they have won two. Every other team has had a draw. These teams have had 3 games under 2.5 goals and 3 games over, and it could go wither way tonight. The Roar have Moore, Tiatto and Milicic back in the team tonight and they will strengthen them up no end. Seo is also back and his drive in midfield will be very beneficial. Ogenovski will still be a loss, but Queensland were very good last week against Newcastle with quality players missing. Central Coast are missing Dean Hefferenan who has been a rock in defence, and he also creates many forward plays, and his energy and creativity will be missed. This game could go either way, and their is definite value if you like the Mariners to win. The loss of Heffernan will hurt Central Coast and Queensland have gained some quality ins, and this sways me towards the draw tonight, and I also think there will be a few goals scored by two attacking sides. Queensland Roar/Central Coast Mariners DRAW @ $3-25 (Sportingbet) Over 2.5 Goals @ $1-95 (Centrebet) Good luck with your punting!

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) A-League website says the weather is fine, but I live in Brisbane and we've had showers all day. Just had a downpour about 40mins ago. I'm tailing the bandwagon and jumping on the draw. Had a look at both teams lineups and despite the outs for CCM, they still have a very formidable looking lineup. Really impressed with their forward line so far. However I think QLD have alot to play for tonight and so as tempting as backing CCM is, I think QLD will get something from the match in front of their home support. I just think you've got to follow the trend until it stops paying. Back the draw @3.50 (Betfair) Goodluck guys. I expect it to be highly entertaining.;)

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) 10 mins till KO... Whats with everyone being on the draw??? Is it just the history between these 2 sides that swaying everyone??? Was looking at backing that outcome myself...but after looking at a couple of other sites and this one am having my doubts...everyone seems to be on it. Still think I'll go with it but at reduced stakes. 2/10 pts on Draw @ 3.30 (Sportstab) 3/10 pts over 2.5 gols @ 2.16 (Sportstab)...looks like the under has been hit hard.

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Spot on regards the wet weather Matt as the first half had steady for most of the game. Queensland dominated the first half and again they had plenty of shots without every really threatening. Both sides have had limited chances and not really looked like scoring. The Roar defence has been hard to get past with Moore very strong down back. The Mariners have also been impenetrable with Boogaard continuing his fine early season form. At this stage the Over 2.5 looks like it will take a miracle to get up, but the draw is looking awfully good. :ok

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Well the Mariners at $2-80 turned out to be value indeed considering they were unbeaten and on top of the ladder by 4 points. Having said that, Queensland had more shots than a rabid dog in the second half but they were unable to convert, whereas the Mariners would have been lucky to have 2 or 3 and they managed to score. It is all about scoring goals and kudos to the Mariners for converting and going on to win the game. Queensland were clearly the better side but they could not score. Much like the game against Adelaide they were relentless in attack but were unable to find the winning goal. Top quality game and really should have been a draw, but the Mariners win and are currently 7 points clear on top.

The operative word being everybody. Quite incredible really when you watch the replay to see how many legs it managed to get through before crossing the goal line. Just a freak goal. The sought of goal that was going to seperate the 2 on the night. Bit disappointing in the end that I didn't back my judgement and take CCM, although it's not like they played well enough to deserve the win. It was more down to QLD's horrible finishing in front of goal.

Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Mariners outlast Roar The Central Coast Mariners have extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points and maintained their 100 per-cent start to the season through a 1-0 win over Queensland Roar at a rain-drenched Suncorp Stadium. With three games still to play in the third round, the Mariners have already established a clear distance between themselves and the chasing pack after Adam Kwasnik's rifled winner handed the visitors their first win over the Roar in seven league meetings. The Queenslanders dominated proceedings but fell foul to a cleverly worked corner early in the second-half with the depleted Mariners, minus Qantas Socceroos call-up Dean Heffernan and No.1 Danny Vukovic, then holding on for a third successive Hyundai A-League victory. Vukovic's replacement, Matthew Trott, made two outstanding second-half saves to preserve the Central Coast's lead but the Roar was left to rue three chances spurned by South American playmaker Marcinho. Coach Frank Farina opted to continue with Danny Tiatto in central midfield despite the absence of Andrew Packer at left-back and, helped by the former Socceroo's influence, the Roar had steadily gained control of the midfield battle. Tiatto, who managed to avoid getting booked and so is free to travel to Perth next weekend, actually dislocated his left shoulder in the first-half in an innocuous challenge with Sasho Petrovski before bravely continuing. Goalkeeper Liam Reddy saved smartly from the onrushing Kwasnik on four minutes, but from then on Queensland manufactured the better goalscoring chances with Marcinho twice going close although failing to test Trott on either occasion. Central Coast midfielder Mile Jedinak, who had been designated to man-mark the Brazilian, was sticking to his task but with Petrovski and Nik Mrdja starved of service strikes on goal were few and far between. In the shadows of half-time, Andre Gumprecht and Simon Lynch both wasted clear-cut opportunities with the German midfielder firing wide after neat work from Petrovski and Lynch inches away from deflecting Matt McKay's centre past Trott. But 10 minutes after the break, a well-worked corner from Damien Brown caught the Roar defence napping and Kwasnik thundered a shot through a crowd of players and past the unsighted Reddy. Marcinho should have drawn the scores level after dancing through the Mariners backline but again failed to find the target with a rasping low drive before Trott's outstanding double save. First the 22-year-old Gosford-born 'keeper blocked Ante Milicic's effort after Tony Vidmar failed to clear, then pulled off an acrobatic one-handed diving stop to deny Reinaldo's goal-bound header. By now Queensland was throwing everything at the resolute Mariners but the league leader held firm to end a hoodoo stretching back over two seasons. Farina said afterwards he was unconcerned that the goalscoring problem which has dogged the club for two seasons remained unsolved. Queensland Roar 0 Central Coast Mariners 1 (Kwasnik 55) Crowd: 8815 at Suncorp Stadium
