A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug)

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) In season 2007/08 we will trial having an individual thread for each of the 4 weekly A-League matches. Last season with the one thread it got pretty hectic since games are spread out over 3-4 days and people posting live score updates. If successful it will remain this way, if not we will revert back to the way we had it last year. :ok

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Id say this is the most anticipated match of the round. Cant wait to see how the leagues the club Wellington go in their first match, while at the same time see how my favourite team Melbourne go in their first game defending their title of last year. Planning to get a Melbourne Victory membership next week so will go to all their home games. Cant wait for the A-League to kick off this year :drums

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) What's your reasoning behind the 10 Units on Melbourne Victory Demma? The new team Wellington Pheonix have sound pre season form, including wins over the Victory and Sydney. I am not sure why they are showing over $4-00 for a win at home. Hard to take Melbourne at $1-77 away from home on pre season form, way too short for mine, but I guess the actual season is different to pre season games.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Melbourne are going to play a very different structure this year, I'd expect to see a tougher/stronger style in the center of the park, and a heck of a lot more width with Keenan and Kemp playing wing-back roles. A few points on Caceres to score first would be well placed as he seems to be finally playing further up the pitch and getting good early service from the wing backs, I expect him to push in from the right and try and curl a few in. It will be interesting to see how Melbourne adjust to the extra crosses that should be coming in with this width, Archie and Danny have not been overly strong in the air and seem to both favor the back post looking for the dropping ball to volley. The pre-season suggests goals in this one, but I feel that Melbourne will have trouble scoring while the players adjust to Archie coming back in and the new structure (and the loss of Fred and Storey), Ernie will be keen to spread the minutes around so I'd say there would be some early changes, Patafta looks likely to get a run, and Broxham should also see some more time this year. I like the under 2.5 goals here quite a lot. Another thought to factor in when betting on this one is how Melbourne want to start the season, they have a long season ahead with the Asian Champions League seemingly the driving force behind alot of the recruiting during the off-season (lets be fair Hernandez is still quite a way off his best after his injury). Ernie was very smart in his list management last season and with Muscat and a few others seeming off the boil there is a chance that Melbourne could cough up a few points early in this season. So Caceres as first goal scorer and Under 2.5 for me at this stage, no money for Melbourne at the $1.77, half ball for Wellington might get a look in over the weekend.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) MELBOURNE Victory's Brazilian striker Leandro Love has been cleared for kick-off, after a long delay for Brazilian authorities to approve the deal. Victory was told yesterday that Leandro could play in Melbourne's A-League season-opener, away to Wellington Phoenix on Sunday. There were concerns Leandro, signed as back-up to lead strikers Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp, would not be cleared in time. But the only decision remaining rests with coach Ernie Merrick and whether to pick him.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Phoenix injury list getting shorter THINGS are coming together at the right time for Wellington Phoenix FC, with all frontline players on the injured list either back in full training or due back very soon. The first injured player to make his return to action is goalkeeper Mark Paston, who will travel to Melbourne for the Phoenix’s 2007 Pre-Season Cup match against reigning Hyundai A-League premiers Melbourne Victory at Olympic Park on Saturday. Paston was one of several players to have missed the Phoenix’s 2007 Pre-Season Cup campaign to date. Midfielders Tim Brown, Richard Johnson and Vince Lia are yet to turn out for the new Hyundai A-League club in a competitive game. However, Johnson is back at full training, with Lia and Brown due back in action soon. Young striker Costa Barbarouses is close to a full recovery from a minor groin injury. Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert was pleased with how his squad was shaping up ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season opener against the Victory at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on August 26.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Preview: Wellington Phoenix v Melbourne Victory Date: Sunday August 26 Kick-off (local time): 4.00pm Venue: Westpac Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 2 (SKY Sport 2 in NZ) Radio coverage: The Radio Network 1035 AM Wellington Head-to-head First league meeting Previous meeting Melbourne 1 Wellington 2 (Olympic Park, Pre-Season Cup playoffs, August 2007) Past five results Wellington: Loss - Win - Loss - Win - Draw Melbourne: Draw - Loss - Loss - Loss - Loss Analysis It took until round eight last year for Melbourne Victory to drop a point - and by then coach Ernie Merrick's side already had one hand on the Premier's Plate. But Merrick is readying himself and the Victory squad for a series of tougher challenges this time around starting with Sunday's meeting with Hyundai A-League newcomer Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium. If Wellington's Pre-Season Cup performances are any judge, the Phoenix will offer a serious threat to the established clubs during the forthcoming campaign. Not only did coach Ricki Herbert's side beat both the reigning league champion and Sydney FC in pre-season as well as drawing with the Jets - three of last year's finalists - it did so in some style. Herbert's starting side - one built around a core of Kiwi internationals yet with a light sprinkling of Brazilian flair thanks to playmakers Daniel and Felipe Campos - looks a match for any. All Whites striker Shane Smeltz and Daniel scored in the Pre-Season Cup victory over Melbourne at Olympic Park with Smeltz also grabbing two against Sydney in the second round despite playing out of position in right midfield. Former Victory midfielder Michael Ferrante looks set to face his former employer for the first time in the Hyundai A-League but Vince Lia, another ex-Melbournian, is not named in a 20-man squad because of a hamstring strain. However, Tim Brown (groin) and Cleberson (hamstring) are included with Brown hopeful of his competitive debut after missing the entire pre-season. For Melbourne, Archie Thompson took a knock to his knee in the Pre-Season Cup loss to Sydney but should be 100 per cent by Sunday. Central defender Ljubo Milicevic comes back into the travelling party after a one-match ban with Matthew Kemp (corked thigh) also drafted in by Merrick. Steve Pantelidis drops out while Brazilian striker Leandro Love, although cleared to play, is also left at home.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) CURRENT ODDS Wellington Phoenix $4-30 DRAW $3-45 Melbourne Victory $1-77 (Centrebet) Wellington Phoenix $4-40 DRAW $3-50 Melbourne Victory $1-75 (Sportingbet) I cannot understand why the Victory is so short here and the home team is such big odds. Melbourne have not won a game pre season and they are asking you to take $1-77 here against a team who has won 2 games and the Phoenix are yet to concede a goal at this venue in two games so far. The home sides two wins were against Sydney and Melbourne and they have scored 6 goals in 5 games, so that is fairly encouraging form for Wellington. No way they should be over $4-00 on exposed form, the Victory look like they are building into the season rather than exploding out of the blocks like they did last year.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Merrick gives orders for all-out attack FULL-ON attack will be the order and shoot on sight the decree as Melbourne Victory charges into the new season, according to coach Ernie Merrick. With kick-off this weekend, Merrick has placed a strong emphasis on attacking play in the final week of preparations, seeking a repeat of last season's free-scoring ways. As a result, import midfielder Carlos Hernandez has been given the green light to fire at will. Having come to the A-League with a reputation for long-range goals, the Costa Rican international has already scored one from distance against Perth Glory in the pre-season cup. Victory needs more goals from midfield, which is where Hernandez, known in Costa Rica as El Zorro, comes in. Merrick has given him permission to shoot whenever he is within his extended range. "Yes, any time he's in and around the box," Merrick said yesterday. "He hit a 30m belter against Perth and we know what he's capable of. He's beginning to settle and get the confidence to do that and we've given him the confidence to shoot. "I don't think he's shown what he's capable of yet. He's striking the ball well and he's outstanding on free kicks, so we've got to get him to reproduce that form now on match day." After Hernandez arrived in Melbourne unfit and overweight, there were suggestions Merrick might prefer teenager Kaz Patafta in the attacking midfield role for Victory's season-opener away to Wellington Phoenix on Sunday. But if yesterday's training session was any clue, it seems Hernandez, who played for Costa Rica at last year's World Cup finals in Germany, will be in the starting line-up as Victory opens its championship defence. While Hernandez will be charged with taking most free kicks close to the penalty area and gunning at goal from all distances, the entire team will be encouraged to play an attacking brand of football and take the initiative against all opponents. "We've sorted out our defence really well, we've got a good, strong midfield and it's about finishing," Merrick said. "We didn't finish well in the pre-season cup, but as you are aware from last season, we're very good at getting into goal-scoring positions. "(Attacking football is) our brand of football, and that's been the emphasis of the last few training sessions." There's no doubt Victory will go into the game against Wellington, the A-League's new franchise replacing New Zealand Knights, looking to attack and looking to win to make a statement about its intention to win back-to-back championships. "It's about hopefully getting a win first-up," Merrick said. "We're certainly going for a win. We're not playing for a draw away from home, and then it's about consistently picking up points as we go along. When you win the premiership and the championship, then it's pretty difficult to be an underdog the next season. "Whether we are or we aren't, we've just got to get on with playing the game. If that means we have to be a little bit more mentally tough, then that's fine as well."

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Will be very intresting to see how Melbourne go without Fred this year, as he was awesome last year and was their main playmaker, i think they might struggle for the first few games until they get their midfield sorted out, should be intresting game against the Kiwis.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Full strength Victory welcomes fabulous five Melbourne Victory has named a full strength squad, including five new faces, for its historic first match against Hyundai A-League newcomers Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium this Sunday (kick-off 2:00pm AEST).Carlos Hernandez, Ljubo Milicevic, Joseph Keenan, Matthew Kemp and Kaz Patafta have all been selected and are in line to make their full debuts for Victory in the club’s first Hyundai A-League match since its memorable Grand Final win against Adelaide United in February. Grand Final hero Archie Thompson and last season’s Reebok Golden Boot Award winner Danny Allsopp are expected to resume their dynamic partnership up front, while Rodrigo Vargas and Daniel Piorkowski will form a strong base in defence. Piorkowski, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury in December last year and missed the Grand Final, will make his Hyundai A-League return against Phoenix and is likely to fill the role vacated by former defender Adrian Leijer.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory The Victory are mighty short in this game considering they have lost all five of their pre season games, including one against Wellington Phoenix in Melbourne at Olympic Park. The Phoenix look a very good unit with some very handy players including Aloisi, Coveny, Ferrante, Old and the emerging Smeltz. The Victory have a number of new players who have not played much together and they may need some time to get their act together. Carlos Hernandez is highly rated and has a thunderous shot which he has been told to use from anywhere on the pitch. Up forward Melbourne have dynamic duo Allsop and Thompson who are capable of scoring everytime they go forward. On last seasons form one would expect a Melbourne win, but teams need to be in form to play well, and Melbourne are not. Wellington's pre season form has been excellent with wins over Sydney and Melbourne and a draw with Newcastle Jets, three of last season's finalists, so they are playing good football. Wellington are the value here as they are paying $4-10 against a team they beat not too long ago, and in a two horse race anything over $4 is good value. I am opting not to bet on this match as I want to see how both teams go, but you could do no worse than to take the home team with a handicap as it really does represent value on exposed pre season form. Bear in mind that the Victory are reigning premiers and they could just slip straight into form and turn it on now the real season has begun. NO BET

Re: A-League Round 1 - Wellington vs Melbourne (Sun 25th Aug) I have to admit i like a full strength Melbourne here. They were a quality outfit last year, but the quality they have added to their squad during the off season is amazing and they will be even strong this year. Cant wait to see how new signing Hernandez goes as coach Ernie Merrick has given him license to shoot from anywhere on the pitch, because he has a reputation for scoring long range goals this could be a huge asset for the Victory. Former Chelsea backman Joe Keenan will start, while Ljubo Milicevic will start in the back also and he comes with massive wraps. Matthew Kemp will also start for Melbourne and he is a massive inclusion also, he was a big reason why Adelaide ad one of the best defensive records during the the first two seasons and will be a major presence in the backline. Wellington also have a pretty decent team on paper and some good pre season form, but with a Melbourne backline with these star players, i see it pretty difficult for Wellington to score. The question will be can Melbourne score? With the Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp duo in full stretch today, plus Hernandez, i believe they will and they should win about 1-0 or 2-0 in my opinion. Pick Melbourne WIN at $1.83 - Centrebet
