AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11)

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Right, all I've heard since I got here is "footy's not what it used to be". Well, I'll give you the sh!t new rule(s), but that tonight was epic, just epic - can't beat a full house and a comeback and gutsy display like that. Essendon are a chance playing like that...or, they would be if they could play all games at the Dome...absolutely superb display by the Dons tonight I thought after being asleep for the first quarter, and even after that letting comebacks slip a couple of times. James Hird :eek:eek Dunno who got BOG but if it wasn't Jimbo then I dunno what you have to do to get it. The guy was sensational tonight, thoroughly deserved the win. Would be great to see him go out taking another flag :D Gellong for the flag for me, but if the Bombers carry on with that kind of spirit, guts, and courage under fire, they can go a long, long way imo - gained a lot of my respect tonight that did :ok

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Brilliant effort by the Bombers tonight, they were done and duested it seemed at around half time, I even got on the pocket news on my mobile phone just to check the final score because i thought Essendon were gone and boy was i supprised when i learnt they won by 1 point. Ruined the epic last quarter for myself, but a great win in the circumstances. Mighty thing about this is the fact Essendon have now beaten the two teams who have played off in the past two Grand Finals in consecutive weeks by 1 point. The Bombers are a good sniff on making the Final 8 now and while i dont reckon they'll get to the Grand Final, they will certainly give a few premiership contenders a run for their moeny before this season is out

Well, I'll give you the sh!t new rule(s), but that tonight was epic, just epic - can't beat a full house and a comeback and gutsy display like that.[/quote'] Ive gotta say footy definately aint what it used to be, but games like tonight take you right back. Thats exactly how footy should be played, fast exciting footy with a full forward up either end kicking a bag and the result still in the air right til the final siren. Was a pleasure to watch. The good thing about the 2007 AFL Season is the fact there are no stand out teams really. There are quite a number of teams who seem on an even par. West Coast & Geelong have been dominant but they have also proven to be vulnerable. Hawthorn, Collingwood, Adelaide and even Essendon have shown they are capable of beating anyone on their day this year too. Cant remember the last time the top 5 teams have all been within a game of each other at the half way mark of the year. Lets hope this sort of footy keeps up and that we dont get taken hostage by flooding tactics and umpiring effecting results of matches. Will be an exciting run home now til the end of the season

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Just heard that Luke Ablett from the swans will be missing today. Big loss in the midfield against a pretty strong hawthorn outfit.

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) As 'exciting' as it was...still a LOT of shit umpiring, that could have easily ruined it one way or the other... Judd and Kerr seem to be able to stand in tackles indefinately, before disposing of the ball (sometimes not even in the first quarter!)...whereas I think it was Stanton took two steps, hit from both sides, the ball spills out and it's ball?! The hands in the back rule is getting worse and worse by the week...McViegh in the first quarter put the slightest of hands on an Eagles player as the BOTH went well under the ball...the ball would have gone over their heads by a good 3-4 metres, only to be given a free... ...then the (almost) killer was with 1.30 to play, Rowan Jones dives on a ball on the Eagles 50, which was one of the easiest, most blatant holding the balls in this era of pinging people for the sake of it...only to be balled up!...and hence keep the Eagles chances alive. The right side definately won (thankfully)...'cause we might have had a riot had the Eagles pinched a late goal. Oh, and thanks to all the players for shutting up shop in the last. Tired legs, or nerves...don't care. I needed 18 minutes without a goal to sneak in the under... ...mind you, given Essendon had kicked 13.2 at one stage, and there were only 44 shots, I think the right result er, resulted there too ;) Sydney/Hawthorn under 176.5 today. Nice number.

But they also get held onto when they dont have the ball, even when in front of goal *cough* twice *cough*. Peverill even tackled him when he himself had the ball! I think they win them and lose them and people always want to see them get pinned.

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Bombers were great last night, again, James Hird inspired win. Think there luck may run out soon though. The last three games they've won have all been pretty close. Against the Tigers and Swans a bit of umpiring fortune aided their cause. Last night I thought the Eagles were unlucky. They should have iced the game at quarter time. A great fightback by the Dons but there were a few occasions when the ball bounced straight to a Don or right over an Eagle to an Essendon player. This luck can't go on for ever. I thought the Eagles played only one and a half good quarters of footy in all honesty. Hird was the difference in the end but a bit of lady luck was once again with Essendon. Out of the Vic teams, they wouldn't be in the top 3 for mine.

Not big into conspirancy theories...well, not sporting ones anyway...so I say no more. :D

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Funnily enough, twenty-five years ago all you heard was "footy aint what it used to be" and I imagine we'll still hear the same in twenty-five from now. The defensive presense of those two sides (especially Essendon) in last few minutes to not allow a score was brilliant. :clap I feel Hawks may prevail in the second half. Well I hope so - on 'em at 1.93 Go Ana - she's the value, anyway. Jankovic's mental approach was awful but this girl should take it up to her.

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Oh yes. Absolutely. Great game by the players... ...I actually got the best of both worlds in the end...got to appreciate the game as a game (ie. non-betting!) in the last quarter, 'cause I just figured the under was over!... ...just think the umpires...maybe rules committee more-so, seem to put the need for tinkering above the game itself... ...although, the high score correlation that I'm sick to death of talking about is no doubt being pushed... ...which brings me to today's game. If there was ever an argument against high scoring = high entertainment it is this game!! GREAT to watch. Pressure skills, tackling, vision and release skills in tight packs...brilliant football. Loving watching it. No doubt the people who count will see it as a low scoring, boring slug... ...but if this doesn't get your heart pumping as a footy fan, then you're the problem, not the game. Hopefully the Hawks can get up Ash..brave call!! :D

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Anyone watch the 'AFL classics' game on 501 just then? Adelaide v Carlton 2004. Good memeries as I had a full stake on the Blues at 7.75 - the big comeback, Fevola's 50-metre match winner from the bounday, and totally wetting myself when Johncock got that free kick on goal (missed it) with 40-secs to go.

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) I remember well... Had the Crows on the end of a decent sized multi... Ran a bath at 3/4 time...relaxed...well, not too relaxed 'cause I wasn't alone! :D... ...heard things getting frantic just above the sound of the stereo...tears... ...all ended in tears... :lol ...well, not all !!! Dogs get it done with two horror (well, hopefully not) injuries. Either way, Cross looks out for a month at best, same with Griffen. Bad, BAD news for a struggling Doggies... ...but hey, job done. There's been worst weeks...

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Think Rocket just said Cross is out for eight. Not sure about Griffin though. Tossed up which game to watch. Went for Blues/Power. Port have completely lost the plot. Tredrea in bad shape. P. Burg's form suggests maybe carring injury (was fitness test last week and struggled)??. Blues playing with much better discipline now and confidence.

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Two games of footy live on tv last night and thought I would have a look at the Aker v Brisbane game which really fizzled into nothing. Aker kicked a couple of goals in the first quarter but looks a shadow of the former superstar that he was. Jonathan Brown is also a superstar but is asked to do too much and is always up against multiple defenders when going for any contest. His body will not stand the test of time if he is always going to get that kind of treatment. Not sure what Matthews is thinking, but Brown is asked to do too much. The game itself was rather dull and made worse by the Bulldogs at times playing kick to kick in the backline, a blight on our game and needs to be outlawed. Got an sms from Jeffers just before the end of the first quarter of Blues/Port game and thought the Blues must be doing alright. Turned the channel over to that game and Carlton 39 to Port 21 and ended up watching most of this match cos it was an exciting brand of footy. I will give Carlton one thing, at least they play attacking footy, not like the blanketing Hawks/Swans type game. Give me attacking footy any day. Blues again kicked a very high score and had Port on the ropes for a 100 point beating but let it slip. I remember when Port where on 54 points in 3rd quarter and thought this will be Carlton's first game where a team does not score 100 points or more, but somehow Port managed to score over 100, and therein lies the Blues achilles heel, their defence. Great effot none the less by Carlton :ok

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Score Predictor & My Tips(in Bold) Adelaide 86 Geelong 119 St.Kilda 78 Kangaroos 93 Fremantle 116 Richmond 72 Melbourne 81 Collingwood 103

The Crows will try and close down the game and restrict the Cats, hoping to keep the Cats to scoring about 10 goals because the Crows aren’t capable of kicking much more than that. The Cats won’t get it all their own way but are playing too well and should handle the Crows.

The tall forward structure of St.Kilda must produce today or they can forget about the finals. The Saints are a 40 point better team at the Dome and are getting some good players back. The Kangaroos fell away against the Eagles last week and had a lot of players down. The Saints midfield looks better and I expect them to win comfortably.

The Dockers were good last week against Collingwood and look to have Richmond’s measure. The Tigers will keep them honest but I can’t see them holding Tarrant and Pavlich in the forward line and Sandilands should dominate in the middle.

Monday’s game is the trickiest match of the round to pick. The Demons are looking better and have a good recent record over the Pies. The loss of Prestigiacomo is massive and his replacement, Wakelin is just an ordinary player now. Both defences are suspect and a high scoring game looks on the cards. I think Collingwood will win, but with no confidence.

Suggested Bets

ST.KILDA Margin (25+)

It’s been a good round so far, with Sydney and the Bulldogs getting their seasons back on track. The Swans were able to adjust after losing Kennelly early against the Hawks. It was a real finals atmosphere at the MCG yesterday and the Hawks need more tests like that to be competitive in September. They lost no friends yesterday and showed they can compete with the best. The Swans needed that win, but need to reproduce that effort against Collingwood next round to show they are a threat again.

Briefly, the Lions are now playing the worst football in the comp. They have been awful in the last 5 weeks and no improvement in sight. The Blues are playing attractive football and crushed Port. Carlton v Hawthorn next Friday night will be a great match in front of a full house.

Good luck.

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Will be interested to see the full stats tomorrow... ...but I suspect, as badly as Port played, they weren't at all crushed. In fact, they did have one more shot than a very accurate Blues outfit. Can only increase the value of the Hawks next week ;) Geelong @ Adelaide under 177.5 Really liking Global atm...they (this weekend anyway!) seem to set their totals within 1-2 points on the right side of of just what I'm after.

I don't think anyone was realistically thinking the 2000/01 version of Aker would be on show at the Doggies... For me he is a far more consistant Matty Robbins...A guy who can patrol the forward line, and inject some spark in the middle on a limitted basis when required. I'll certainly take 15 & 2 goals from him every game! :clap Can you seriously sit there and say the Carlton game was more entertaining than Hawthorn/Sydney??!! Good lord. Exhibit 1 in the case of Death of traditional sport v. Commercial, cash driven 'shows'. :puke

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) Actually to be honest Taza I didn't see much of Hawks/Sydney, was listening to it on radio, and commentators were saying it about the game, so my bad. I got home and started watching the third quarter and it was a good contest from what I saw, but to be perfectly honest, I fell asleep in thrid quarter watching it and when I woke up the game was over and I seen final scores. Was more me being tired than game being bad, but either way, I fell asleep. I wouldn't have fallen asleep during Eagles/Bombers game in the third quarter. Seemed to be a good win by the Swans, smothered the running Hawks who rely on one player Franklin (kicked 6 from 9 team goals). Pies play Sydney in 2 weeks and I can't wait, cos Swans hold no fears for us, and with Kennelly out, can't wait even further, get on the Pies! Gong back to Carlton, they have scored big last 2 games and with Fevola getting only 3 goals or so, a great sign. Is it just me, or is Brendan Fevola not attacking the ball in the manner he should? From where I sit he is leading to the ball half heartedly and then pushing himself forward trying to get an easy free kick. Not good enough!

Re: AFL Football Round 11 (Friday June 8 - Monday June 11) The Carl/Port game was bland compared to Hawks/Swans. Two completely different standard games with lots of easy goals compared to well deserved goals at the MCG, just doesn't stack up. Also I didn't mind the bulldogs playing possesion at end of third to keep match winning lead - something differnt and sport should about trying to win. I find it hard to appreciate otherwise. As I've said before, I gave the rattle away years ago.

Carlton have scored 43 goals the past two rounds with Fevola kicking only 3 goals. Gotta be a good sign as the Blues have been one dimensional the last 5 years or so looking for Fevola every time they go forward. Now players like Waite, Fisher, Lappin & even Setanta O'hAilpin last night are proving they can be value assets up front. I noticed something Pagan was doing last night at the game, he was rotating backman into the forward line all night, so we never had the same forward lineup for more than 10 minutes at a time. First time id noticed it but its obviously starting to work. Opoisiton teams would find that sort of thing hard to man up with

Fevola may be carrying injury' date=' bjv?[/quote'] Fev is carrying a foot injury. I dont know how major it is but its possibly the reason for his sorm slump lately.

The Carlton game was very exciting! Of course im bias though, i can see why it would be a bit dull for neutral fans, but that was Carltons biggest win since 2001 so i think im entitled to get excited. Plus we had the best seats in the house, we actually had TV Screens on our armchairs!! :dude I didnt see much of the Haw-Syd game, me and Jeffers watched the last quarter at Crown Casino and that last term was pretty exciting to say the least. We had seen glimpses of the score all day though and when it was 38-38 late in the 3rd quarter we were thinking to ourselves what a shit game that would be to watch. But defintately a good finish Carlton play Hawks on Friday night, so another potential high scorer on the cards again

No mate...that's a fair comment...and funny you say it... I was talking to my dad last night, and he listened to the radio aswell (Garry Lyon he said, not sure what station that is)...and yes, he said the same thing. They bagged it non-stop. Shocking game. Too much chipping...etc. etc. So yeah, clearly the media has a large responsibility...not sure why ex-players would see it the way they described it tho. :\ The Dogs at the end of 2nd and 3rd was fine by me too, Ash. Firstly, they were 2 important players down...actually had NO bench at end of 2nd!...so I saw it as a chance to rest/conserve some energy as much as anything else. Besides, Brisbane were poor! 2 minutes is usually the absolute limit that teams can chip around...Brisbane seemed quite content to sit back and allow it to happen, which is mad given they were 6 goals down!! Anyone else (Ash!) think Richmond are actually a decent chance to get the win today?? :unsure Freo just 2 wins by more than 16 points...the win v. Melbourne was good, but they were dead-set outplayed by St. Kilda at home, only to see the Saints kick 6.19. Take out the Geelong game, and Richmond have been in most. Word seems to be that the Tiges will flood...plan on playing 2 men loose, with Polo on Tarrant... ...could be a low scoring, tight struggle. Thinking seriously of taking Richmond +31.5 rather than Freo 1-39...just got a sneaky feeling that the Tiges could be in this one for a LOT of the way. Someone talk me out of it please!!! :cry

Dunno about the win Taza, but i think they'll go very close. Fremantle have not set the world on fire this year, but neither has richmond obviously. Richmond travelled over to Adelaide a few weeks back and lost by 9 points and since that result they have been playing decent footy. I rate Adelaide a better team than Freo so who knows what could happen. The line of about 30 points is worth taking for safety Taza
