Hey folks, Well on tuesday i will be playing my first LIVE poker:nana :nana :nana It will however be semi-friendly as i have arranged a poker night at my place for some work mates. There will be 9 of us in total and i want some advice to make it an enjoyable evening. Of the 9 of us there is me:dude , 3 that have played a bit, 1 good player and 4 poker virgins. I have the poker table, chips and will be supplying the beer!!. The idea is to have about 4 games of texas hold em where we all throw a fiver each game into the pot. Winner takes all or split 1st/2nd and if so what % The "house rake" will be £1 each (one off advance payment) and this will be used to send my 12 year old son back and forth to the fridge! I will also need for the virgins a explanation of the rules, from memory i believe there is a good example in poker news i can print off. I also require a illustrated printable (for crappy printer) copy of the winning hands in order Any advice please to make it an enjoyable/profitable evening:ok Cheers gazza

Re: Advice please...... I've never arranged a home game but I play every week. This site was given to me on another website - it has some great resources: http://www.homepokertourney.com/ I would stick to paying 3 (or even 4) places as in a normal 9 or 10 seat tournie. At this structure, even the poor players have a chance. You want to get them interested in the game, make them think their good players, then cream off their money in subsequent games :lol Make sure the blind structure is not too long or the first out will be very bored. Try a few 10 minute levels in a game, then have your final game 20 minutes or longer. Hope all goes well for you.

Re: Advice please...... Well this is now pretty much a regular feature, Once a month get together with some mates and play 2 or 3 games. Normally play 3 £5 games but find we end up going till about 3 or 4am !! so as of tonight we are going to play 2 £10 games, 8 of us here and prizes of 1st getting £50, 2nd £20, 3rd £10 <a href=%7Boption%7Dhttp://img93.imageshack.us/img93/926/10005466st.jpg' alt='10005466st.jpg'> Anyone else have regular home games ?

Re: Advice please...... I've been organising 'home' games once a fortnight after work since last June. The 'home' is in quotes because we play in the reception area of a local hotel. Because I wanted to only play for fun (and as most of the others were new to the game), the first one was for no money. Unfortunately, one or two played any old crap, so we decided to put in an entry fee of £1, winner takes all. Normally get between 5 and 10 players, although I have around 18 names on my distribution list. And the standard of the games is now very high... which goes to show that you don't need huge prizes to have a good game - we all play for pride, and everyone wants to win. If we have more than 8 players then the top 2 places are paid, and then 3 places if over 12 (which we haven't had yet, but it will happen very soon I think). The last thing I want is for someone to go out 1st hand, so we do tend to start with quite a healthy stack, minimum 7k but could be as high as 13k depending on number of players. We use the same blind structure as most casinos do, and we used to increase levels when the button got back to the seat (or passed it if that person had been knocked out) where it started. Using this method the blinds go up slower to start with whilst most players are still in, but then increase every 2 hands when you get to heads-up, thus ensuring no one is sitting out for too long. The blinds are capped at 4k/8k. We only play one game now (used to be 2) as I have developed a countdown clock and the level increases are generally set at around 15 mins. There are so many home games being set up these days that it can sometimes be difficult to get enough players, but we are still managing to keep our games going. Next one is on Wednesday this week.

I don't really get this. Surely to go out first hand someone has to be all-in first hand? In which case starting stack makes no difference:unsure

Re: Advice please......

To chase people out of a pot when they're trying to catch a flush draw etc. you need to make pot sized bets. This can escalate fairly quickly and a low starting stack can be all in by the river when making correct bets.
Agreed. But there is no reason why you can't adopt your strategy according to your stack.

Re: Advice please...... As demonstrated the other night in the PL game, there is a condition called seven-two-off-itus which means that getting dealt this nefarious hand causes an immediate involuntary reaction that pushes all-in whether it be first hand of the tourney or on the final table. You can cannot adapt for this strategy!!

Re: Advice please...... I've found that with home games with inexperienced players, that a small entry fee, a relatively smallstack and a 10 minute blind increase generally helps to keep everyone happy and people don't sit out for too long (and it avoids side games starting). I'm currently trying to organise a bigger game at a local pub with a more normal structure, the only problem is that there are a lot of people showing interest who're very inexperience but have played a couple of ring games in a drunken evening and are convinced they are Dan harrington (but still need a quick rundown of hand values!!). For their benefit I'll hold a 2 hour training session in the pub the week before to provide a little enlightenment to a proper tournament structure. I hope this will calm them down a little and stop them rushing out to buy a pair of Raybans. For the first one I won't play and I'll try and calm any situations down as they start, but does anybody have any experience of what I'm likely to face organising something like this for the first time. I know I' probably aiming too high but I know most of the people that'll be there and the interest from the Belgians (who've only just discovered 52 card decks) is overwhelming and if I have to watch any more cycling I'll go mad.

Re: Advice please...... We usually get 1 home game a month together with a few mates at my house in Manchester. Normally 6-10 of us. We play £5 games and pay out 1st 3 places, sometimes money back for 3rd etc. Usually have a computer running in the background so that if anyone goes out early they can sit in a cheap tournie or something. We time the blinds at about 15-20mins etc.. Everyone brings there own beers and we alternate making the food... or just go to the local pizza/kebab shop. I've enjoyed every game I've ever hosted and it's great playing on till the early hours. Never taken too seriously, more of a laugh and I think that's how it should be! Danny If anyone wants in on the next one let me know!! I live in South Manchester!!!
