Union Saint-Gilloise vs Genk

The Belgian First Division A has become a fascinating top flight league to follow over recent years so I thought it was time to cover a game with a preview this weekend. Union Saint-Gilloise versus Genk in a 5:30pm BST kick-off on Sunday afternoon from the Stade Joseph Marien is my focus of attention and it's set to be an enthralling encounter with both teams very evenly matched.

Union Saint-Gilloise stunned the top flight of Belgian football last season as a newly promoted by pushing Club Brugge all the way to the league title and finishing 2nd. The club is competing in the Europa League group stage after being eliminated by Rangers in the Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round. Their opening group stage game ended in a 1-0 win over German Bundesliga team Union Berlin. On the domestic front, the club have experienced a solid start with 4 wins, 1 draw, and 2 defeats leaving them in 5th position. Head coach Karel Gerearts will look to continue the fine work of Felice Mazzu but it'll be a tall order. Mazzu hasn't enjoyed the best of starts to his new life with Anderlecht so maybe it wasn't all Mazzu's influence last season. The fact that Les Unionistes possess a goal difference of 0 shows that despite displaying an ability to score freely they are leaking goals in at the other end. The team have also won each of their 4 home matches across all competitions so far this season.

Genk have long been a team in Belgian football that are in the mix every season and this year is no different. Manager Wouter Vrancken begins his tenure with the club after being appointed from Mechelen and it's been god stuff so far with the team winning 5 of their opening 7 league matches to sit in 3rd place in the league table. The division-high 19 league goals scored by the Blue-White show how prolific the team is in front of the opposition goal. Genk have won 2 of their 3 away games this season and that one loss on the road was a courageous 3-2 defeat at the hands of the reigning champions. The team have won back-to-back away league games and scored 4 goals in each of those fixtures. This is evidence of how lethal the team are on their travels and it's a big statement of intent for teams they are travelling to this year.

I'm buzzing to watch this game. Two clubs that are both entering new eras of managers and looking like they have the potential to be involved in the title conversation come the end of the season. Union Saint-Gilloise are not the team they were last season but they still look superb at home. Genk are a dangerous unit on their travels and will be a challenge for any host. I wouldn't be surprised to witness a high-scoring draw here.
