Charlotte FC vs New York Red Bulls

The MLS action is back and we're treated to an 8pm BST kick-off on Saturday evening as Eastern Conference rivals Charlotte FC and New York Red Bulls go head-to-head in this clash at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The home team will be looking to give their play-off hopes a boost with a victory against a visiting side that have their eyes firmly on the top spot.

Charlotte FC might well be in 8th position and just 2 points outside the play-off places but that didn't stop the owners from dispensing with the services of former head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez after their 2-1 loss away to Seattle Sounders with the Spaniard having only been in charge for 14 games. Former Nice and New York City FC assistant manager Christian Lattanzio is the man who has been placed in interim charge of the squad now. It's just 2 wins from the last 7 regular season games for the North Carolina franchise. The team have seen over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of their last 5 games though so we can expect goals in this one.

New York Red Bulls are looking like a team that can really push on and give the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup a proper go this season under head coach Gerhard Struber. Just 1 loss from the last 8 regular season games has seen the team move up to 4th in the table and just 3 points off the pace of conference leaders New York City FC. The Red Bulls came out as convincing 4-1 winners in their last regular season match against DC United and they'll be looking to build on that after a short break of games. Both teams have scored in each of the last 5 matches involving New York Red Bulls so you know you're in for a fun time when watching these boys.

As the statistics show, both of these teams are capable of scoring but they are also a little fragile at the back. Neither team has kept a clean sheet in any of their last 5 matches so I think we can anticipate goals flying in here. I am cynical about the way Charlotte FC are handling their managerial situation. It's disruptive, it's reactive, and that usually doesn't end well. I think New York Red Bulls could take advantage of that lack of stability.

Nashville SC vs San Jose Earthquakes

The second MLS game taking place on Saturday night is the 11pm BST kick-off between the two Western Conference franchises of Nashville SC and San Jose Earthquakes at the Nissan Stadium. The home team are experiencing a far more positive season than their visiting opponents and will be looking to further consolidate their current position in the play-off positions with a victory here.

Nashville SC may well be one of the newer franchises in the MLS but they have already established themselves as a team to watch. Head coach Gary Smith has led his team to 6th in the Western Conference table and even though they are 7 points off the pace of table leaders Los Angeles FC they are 4 points inside the play-offs and it's just 1 loss from the last 8 matches in all competitions. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in 5 of the last 6 matches involving Nashville SC. However, it is a concern that the Tennessee franchise haven't managed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 6 games. It's a good job Hany Mukhtar has been banging in the goals to compensate.

San Jose Earthquakes are currently having a season to forget with the team down in 13th position in the Western Conference and now without a win in their last 3 matches in all competitions including a demoralising 2-0 loss away to Sacramento Republic FC in the last 16 of the US Open Cup. Alex Covelo remains the interim manager but it remains to be seen how long that situation will continue. There is a small bit of hope in the regular season performances. Take that US Open Cup shock defeat aside and it's just 1 loss from the last 5 regular season matches and that was an unsurprising yet narrow 3-2 loss against Los Angeles FC. Defensive displays are a weakness though with no clean sheet coming in their last 6 games.

This is another game where we're not being too demanding to expect some goals. Both teams have shown the ability to score but also display severe weaknesses in their back-line. I think San Jose Earthquakes are making themselves hard to beat but if they want to move up the table and try to gatecrash the play-offs they need more than that. Nashville SC look play-off bound this season and I can see them winning a frantic affair.

Sporting Kansas City vs New England Revolution

The MLS action continues slowly but surely as we have an 8pm BST kick-off on Sunday evening when Sporting Kansas City take on New England Revolution in a cross-conference fixture from Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City. Both teams could desperately do with a victory here with their respective seasons not exactly going to plan. Can either team pull off the 3 points or is this destined to end in a draw?

Sporting Kansas City could not have anticipated a much worse start to their regular season campaign. Head coach Peter Vermes has seen his team win just 3 of their 15 regular season matches so far leaving them bottom of the Western Conference and 5 points adrift of the play-offs. The Wizards have a big US Open Cup Quarter-Final game with Union Omaha coming up but they have this game and an away trip to Nashville SC before then so how will their focus be for these two upcoming regular season fixtures. It's now 9 games without a win for the team who suffered a demoralising 1-0 loss at home to fellow strugglers Vancouver Whitecaps in their last game. The halcyon days of winning the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020 now seem so long ago.

New England Revolution are another team who will look back on times gone by with a sense of longing. Bruce Arena's men finished as winners of the Supporters' Shield last season with a record points tally of 73 points but this season they are down in 22nd place in the overall table and 11th position in the Eastern Conference. The Revs have seen Polish striker Adam Buksa depart for RC Lens for $10 million this past week so that's a massive blow. When you consider the team have already seen Canadian attacker Tajon Buchanan leave for Club Brugge for $7 million earlier this season with keeper Matt Turner also set to leave shortly you can see why Revolution are falling off their standards of last season. There is reason to be optimistic though with the franchise unbeaten in their last 5 regular season games and still only 3 points off the pace of the play-offs.

This is a tricky one to call. The sale of top scorer Buksa is a big gamble for New England Revolution. When you consider that they have only kept two clean sheets in their 13 league games so far you have to wonder where the goals will come from to help them get their points until Buksa is replaced. Sporting Kansas City might be smelling blood here but they have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 6 matches. I'm interesting to see how Arena adapts to life after Buksa and I'm not sure I feel confident backing them to win but I'm also not overly keen to back the home team to get a victory either!
