Cardiff vs Swansea

OK, so I'm going to try and keep my unbiased hat on for this preview... aaaand breathe. It's Cardiff versus Swansea in the hotly-anticipated South Wales Derby at 3pm BST this Saturday afternoon from the Cardiff City Stadium. Both teams are enduring disappointing campaigns overall but judging by their respective fan bases there is still plenty to be optimistic about for the future under the leadership of two young managers.

Cardiff finally appear to be turning in a positive direction under head coach Steve Morison. The club are unbeaten in their last 4 league matches including 3 victories moving them up to 17th in the table and 18 points clear of relegation. The Bluebirds have seen their playing style drastically change under the new gaffer with a number of loan signings and young players being drafted in to help that transition. Just 1 loss from their last 8 home league games, including winning 5 of those matches, has seen this stadium become a bit of a fortress for the club once again and that is always helpful for intense games like this. Just 2 goals conceded in the last 4 league games shows the defence has tightened up. Attacking midfielder Rubin Colwill also bagged his first international goal for Wales during the international break so what role will he have to play in this game? I'm not sure he'll start with the midfield three of Ryan Wintle, Will Vaulks (or Joe Ralls), and Tommy Doyle doing so well recently but we'll see.

Swansea come into this game on a poor run of just 1 win from their last 4 league games. Head coach Russell Martin has suffered criticism from pundits who claim his style of play is too focused on possession and not focused enough on the end product. The Swans are in 16th place but have only scored 41 goals in 37 league games this season. Joel Piroe has been the stand out player for the team this season with his goals helping the team pick up some key points. Away form has been an issue for Swansea this season with the club losing 4 of their last 6 away league games. The big question will be whether Swansea's possession-based play will come unstuck against a Cardiff pressing system that gives the opposition little time to breathe or if the patient game will actually work effectively against the more frantic approach of the home team.

As the famous statistic goes, neither side has ever earned the double over their opponents in this fixture in a single league season. Swansea humiliated us earlier in the season with a 3-0 annihilation of us at their place. It was a deserved defeat. We were awful. We are a completely rejuvenated side now though. It's essentially a completely different team. There is the optimistic part of me that thinks it's high-time Cardiff gave Swansea a battering in this fixture but Swansea always raise their game for this fixture. So don't expect to see the same Swansea team from recent weeks. They'll be up for it. The superstitious part of me doesn't want to back a Cardiff win at risk of jinxing. I think we certainly can win and should have enough to win but this is Swansea. The noisy neighbours. I'll be backing a draw here but wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cardiff win.

Birmingham City vs West Bromwich(WBA)

Birmingham City
They play poorer and poorer in these years. In last season, they were just the eighteenth. Now they rank nineteenth in the League table. They are weak in defence, with 1.49 conceding goals on average this season.

West Bromwich(WBA)
They were full of ambitions at the beginning of this season. They were looking good to upgrade at that time. But then they missed the chance when they got into the poor state. Now they rank twelfth in the League table, far away from an upgrade.
Verdict:
There is a gap between two sides. WBA have never been defeated by Birmingham in the past, which makes them have a psychological advantage. Besides, WBA are on a run. So WBA are more likely to win in the coming match.
