StevieDay1983
Waasland-Beveren vs Standard Liege The Belgian First Division A action continues into Monday this week with the 6pm BST kick-off between Waasland-Beveren and Standard Liege at the Freethiel Stadion in Beveren. Both teams have had a satisfactory start to their campaign with their opening weekend wins in the league but at least one of these sides will drop points here but who will it be? Waasland-Beveren finished bottom of the Belgian top flight last season but were given a reprieve from relegation after the season was cancelled after 29 league matches due to the covid-19 pandemic. Manager Arnauld Mercier has been given a second chance to try and improve the club's fortunes and that faith placed in him by the club's board was rewarded with the 3-1 win away to KV Kortrijk in their opening game. A brace from youngster Daan Heymans was key in that win. Have Waasland-Beveren uncovered a new gem? Standard Liege aren't the Belgian superpower they once were having ended up in 5th place last season and having to settle for the Europa League this season. Philippe Montanier has been brought in to replace former manager Michel Preud'homme. It's now a huge challenge for the new man at the helm to take the club back to their glory days but he started on a positive note with a 1-0 win against Cercle Brugge. The aim this season certainly has to be to move up into contention for qualifying for the Champions League. Failing to win here could be a hammer blow to those aspirations early on. It's always hard to call games so early in the season. Both Waasland-Beveren and Standard Liege looked impressive in their opening games but it's just one game. The home side will be keen to build up some early momentum and get those points on the board as soon as possible to avoid a repeat of last season's embarrassing campaign. The away team know they want to be up there challenging with Club Brugge, Anderlecht, Gent, Charleroi, and Royal Antwerp. Winning is the only option in matches like this to make that become a reality.
