Flat Racing ~ Saturday May 16th (Scoop 6 Races)

Recommended Posts

Saturday’s Scoop6 Races - Anybody having a go this week? Sccop6 win fund starts at £477,526 this week and the Bonus Fund starts a £516,801. Totepool predict the combined pots could reach £1.25 Million this week. Leg 1: 2.35 Newbury A Listed contest over 6f gets us started this week and 14 runners to sort out. We need to concentrate on the unexposed sorts and Salt Island and Waady look useful sprinters in the making. The John Gosden team have been in cracking form all week at York and can carry on the good work with Waady who won well at Sandown last time out. Salt Island was raised 10lbs after his easy win at Newmarket and looks sure to be involved. Selections: Waady (Salt Island) 9/2 Paddy Power Leg 2: 3.10 Newbury The London Gold Cup is the second leg, a tricky 3yo handicap won last year by Michael Stoute’s Cannock Chase. He saddles Dissolution here off just 8st3lbs and Andrea Atzeni takes the ride. I think it’s a trend worth following in an open race. Ryan Moore partners the other Abdulla horse Time Test for Roger Charlton due to him being 9lbs higher and could be the danger. Space Age won by 4 lengths at Beverley last time and makes his handicap debut for Godolphin and is one to keep on the right side of. Selections: Dissolution (Time Test) 4/1 William Hill Leg 3: 3.25 Newmarket Another 3yo handicap forms the third leg over at Newmarket. A sprint over 6f but just 11 runners have been declared. Richard Fahey has three runners and his best hope could Grandad’s World. He won at Pontefract before disappointing in soft ground at Hamilton last time. That was a Conditions race so this represents a drop in class. Of the others Properus finished well last time out at Newmarket and this easier ground will help his cause. Kevin Ryan has his sprinters in good form and Captain Colby steps up to 6f for the first time here and is not badly treated on a mark of 89. Selections: Grandad’s World (Properus) 7/1 BetVictor Leg 4: 3.45 Newbury The big race of the day the Lockinge Stakes has attracted a fantastic field this year and the favourite is Night Of Thunder who won the 2000 Guineas last year. Now in the Godolphin blue he certainly has the form to win this. Richard Hannon’s other runner Toormore only has half a length to find with is stable companion on Ascot form so should be thereabouts on this better ground. Sir Michael Stoute has kept Integral in training as a 5yo and is best of the rest with her sex allowance. Anyone looking for a an outsider could do worse than to back Arod each way, he was second last time and is interesting back at a mile. Selections: Night Of Thunder (Toormore) 11/4 Bet365 Leg 5: 4.15 Thirsk Off to Thirsk for the fifth leg and a nice competitive sprint to look at. Interesting that David O’Meara runs one of his recent additions in Rex Imperator, he also saddles top weight Eccleston and both need watching as the stable’s sprinters are flying at the minute. Barkston Ash won this race last year off a mark of 89, he comes here out of the same stall and a pound lower in the weights so he will do for me. The stands side rail has been known to be quicker here at Thirsk so any high numbered runners are worth a second look. Polski Max from stall 14 will be all the better for his run last time at Newcastle and could be a danger. Selections: Barkston Ash (Polski Max) 16/1 Betfair Leg 6: 4.55 Newbury The final leg is the big handicap at Newbury, 16 runners over the straight mile. Very competitive as you would expect and a chance for GM Hopkins to recoup losses from the Lincoln. He was gambled on for that but could only manage 10th and we shouldn’t give up on him just yet. He goes here off the same mark and Frankie Dettori is in the saddle. Brian Meehan’s horses remain in good form and his Spark Plug ran well here last month on his reappearance when second to Ayaar and can go close again off his current mark of 102. Selections: GM Hopkins (Spark Plug) 3/1 Ladbrokes
