One of the most anticipated Test series of the winter gets underway next week when South Africa host Australia for 3 matches. These two are the two best sides in the world at the minute so this should be a ripper of a series. All live on Sky in the UK so there should be some excellent betting opportunities. Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series Hi All, Just really looking forward to the upcoming test series. A few things to note for betting. 1) The Proteas have not played a proper game since the India tour. Say what you like, they will be rusty, and not match sharp. AB de villiers coming off surgery (to remove a plate from his hand), while Dale Steyn recovering from a rib injury. Couple this with losing Kallis, and an out of form Alvaro Petersen (IMO de Kock should be in instead of him). 2) There has been a lot of rain on the Highveldt and it makes for tricky batting. The ball moves a lot more off the pitch here, and less in the air. SO it will be a bowlers series, with lower scoring than what you would expect in other countries. 3) Batting will be very tough this series, and I am not sure that the Aussies (or SA for that matter) will be able to extricate themselves from these sticky situations of 95 for 5 etc So a low scoring series is probably on the cards, where the bowlers have the advantage. The DRAW is probably not going to happen in any of these tests 7 days to go !

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series Series preview: 4pts South Africa to win Test series 10/11 Spreadex South Africa didn’t look all that convincing against India but whether this Australia batting line up can stand up to the South African attack over the three matches I’m not convinced. Given the quality of the bowling attacks which are on show in this match I don’t expect a high scoring series anyway but I just feel the South African quicks can keep the Australian batting under enough control to ensure they win a potentially great series and one which will be all the better for being three matches. Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series Top Australia Series Batsman preview: 1pt ew B.Haddin Top Australia Series Batsman 11/1 Ladbrokes (1/5 1-3) This may be a series for the older, wiser heads and that leaves us with Chris Rogers and Brad Haddin. I’ve nothing against Chris Rogers but in an ideal world I’ll take someone away from the new ball and that in theory should be Haddin. We saw in the Ashes that even though England were awful their top order never performed as a unit once so Haddin should be coming in at favourable positions to bat. He looked in awesome form in that series and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t enjoy himself in South Africa either. At 11/1 with three places being paid Haddin looks a good each way bet to top Australia’s run charts in this series. Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series Top South Africa Series Batsman preview: 2pts AB.de Villiers Top South Africa Series Batsman 7/2 BetVictor AB de Villiers is in the middle of a wonderful international summer and while that has been split up by hand surgery recently he showed in the warm up match that his hand is back to how he’d like it and he goes into this series fit. Given the volume of runs he has scored this summer and the quality he scores them with there is a strong case to be made that he deserves to be the favourite in this market. He isn’t the bookmakers’ favourite but he is mine. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/south-africa-vs-australia-test-series-betting-ab-de-villiers-can-shine-for-the-hosts

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series SA do very well Centurion. I am not sure what their record is there but it is the place where they win nearly all the time. In tests the team batting second has won double of that batting first (10-5 record?) I think SA have been defeated there maybe once in 20 test matches. Will be interesting, but they may even go all seam attack : Philander, Steyn, Morkel and Parnell, and bowl Duminy to shut up shop at one end. I think those 4 represent the most diverse fast bowling attack by far in world cricket. Unerring accuracy from Philander, skidding pace from Steyn, big bounce from Morkel, and a tricky left-hander in Parnell. I am disappointed to see Thami Tsolekile in the test squad, as a backup specialist wicket keeper. After his unreal showing against India , de Kock (3 100's in a row) should have been there. One good KLAP (translate : Smack) on the wrong part of the hand, could pose some serious problems for AB. I would have preferred to see a specialist keeper in (just for this match) who can bat anywhere in the lineup. Kev, I like your calls on the top scoring batsmen. I think that the conditions and quality of the bowling from both sides will make the top order batting very tough. A) the ball moves off the seam, and B) it goes a little faster on the Highveld. SA are vulnerable with Petersen opening the batting. I don't rate him at all, and Amla will be up against the new ball/very fresh bowlers most of this series. The runs are to be made after lunch, when the pitch settles down. I like Morkel to be the best SA bowler in this series. When SA were in Australia in 2012/2013 he took 3 wickets in the 1st test, 8 wickets in the 2nd (5 and 3), and 3 in the last. I don't think Steyn is going to go full blast in this match as he is coming back from injury. 2 BETS I like would be SA to win 1st test 21/20 on bet365 MORKEL best 1st innings SA bowler at 10/3 bet365

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series 1st Test preview: 4pts D.Steyn's performance - Over 118.5pts 5/6 Paddy Power We’re certainly going to find out from the off what this Australian side are made of. This is no place for the feint hearted but South Africa’s record here shows how tough a place it is to go. One man who thrives here is Dale Steyn. He has 36 wickets here in just six matches at less than 18 a piece. He has taken six or more wickets in four of his six matches here and that would be enough to cover his performance total. Add in any runs he scores to the total and it should be covered comfortably. How do they assign performance points to players ? I do know Steyn has the best bowling figures in a test at Supersport park with 10 wickets in the game. Gorgeous day in JHB today, blue-blue skies and 29C. Same expected on WED (Centurion about 35kms away). Toss could be a big factor here. Would expect the winner to put the opposition in. Just wish it was a 5 test series...sigh

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series SA win the toss and field . Huge toss to win. Michael Clark with typical Aussie spin-doctor remark. "Yes Mark, I would have batted first..." BullS__t. He would have fielded 1st all day..... If Smith had chosen to bat he would have said "Yes Mark, I would have fielded first..." so funny :lol Very happy to see that Elgar has been left out of this team. I am not sure what he adds. His contribution as a specialist batsman is questionable. Gonna play a specialist batsman, well why not play David Miller. Miller is in exactly the same situation as Eon Morgan for England. Not given a proper chance as the selectors feel that they are not technical enough for test cricket, which is garbage.

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series Have had a little dabble in play on Johnson being top scorer this first innings @ 36. Aussie top order isn't generally much chop outside of an occassional Warner flyer and Clarke, and with this green pitch it wouldn't surprise me if Johnson is in by the 2nd session and he can hit runs quickly which is helpful to try and get this kind of bet home.

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series SA v Australia 1st test Interesting situation in the game for betting. The Aussies will prob bat until 40 minutes before lunch on. This gives the quicks a chance to really come out blasting, get a break and do it again after lunch. So they have to get through 8 overs of Johnson. Between Smith, Petersen and Du Plessis they managed to face 25 balls in the 1st innings. Smith misjudged a short ball from Johnson, should have ducked under it. Petersen is clueless... probably the worst technical batsman opening in world cricket. Du Plessis is a solid #5. Got a ripper from Johnson. SA missing Kallis just like England really missed Trott. AB de Villiers showed why he is #1 rated test batsman. Looked like he was playing a different opponent to his teammates. He had so much time against the fastest bowler alive, and in any sport that is the hallmark of greatness. SA have been terrible in the 1st test of their last 3 or 4 series. Under-cooked and not ready. Get through the initial 8-10 overs of Johnson and I really believe they will have a chance to save this game. I will bet in play accordingly.... Gotta say (even as an ardent SA supporter) that it's fantastic for cricket to see a guy like Johnson bowling in this way. Its incredible for the game, for someone to raise the bar with such terrific performances.:notworthy It also puts the English performances in the ashes in perspective, because our batting hammered England last series (Amla 311 NO), and we are getting steamrolled. It should be an interesting start to the day. The Aussies are in control. I would love to see Steyn and Morkel give the Aussies a real working over. Bowl as fast as you can, and do some damage. We don't need wickets here, but some brutal fast bowling of our own would be a decent experiment. May as well, as the Aussies will only bat for an hour. Go and rough them up and ding some helmets :@ , inflict some pain

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series Having watched Australia take SA to pieces the response from the chief of selectors is "They didn't play as well as they could have, and a few things went against them. But the team underperformed and it needs to pick up a gear in Port Elizabeth," he said. "It's about really application. It's about the players rallying together and realising they're up against it. Australia played really well; we were under par. There's no doubt they are the right players. They need to step up to the plate." That's a beaut from Andrew Hudson, who I reckon is delusional. Needs to pick up a gear is a fkcing joke. If they don't find another 3 gears they are going to get flattened again. I am sure there will be a positive reaction, it's the SA way, but I am not sure they can overcome Johnson. You cannot play test cricket with 3 passengers and 1) Alviro Petersen 2) JP Duminy 3) Robin Petersen are all on borrowed time. Alviro looked lost and confused. No footwork at all makes him a sitting duck. JP DUminy has been living on his reputation for 4 years. Robin Petersen was jumping around at the crease and looked plain scared against Johnson (can't really blame him ;) ) Faf Du Plessis is not a test #4. Got to switch him and AB de Villiers around, get your best battera at #3 and #4. Need de Kock in as wicket keeper, and a solid number 7 batter, and Parnell in to replace Mclaren who looked limited. The allrounder is not working here. Rather a specialist batter or bowler. Dean Elgar is not the specialist batter that will get the job done here. I simply don't think the replacement (just Parnell for Petersen or Mclaren) is going to make any difference to the next outcome, especially if the same three mentioned above all play. I hate to bet against my side, but I just can't see anything being different in the second test. Australia are 1.3 to win the second test which is a decent price. Will wait and see the teams before betting here.....

Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series 2nd Test preview: 4pts A.Petersen Under 24.5 first innings runs 5/6 Paddy Power Alviro Petersen’s form coming into this series was poor at best and awful at worst and it didn’t get a lot better for him in the First Test when he was out for scores of 2 and 1. It is probably wrong to say that a guy averaging over 37 looks out of his depth but Petersen is clearly struggling and with the pressure mounting I expect that to continue here against a bowling attack which is really on top of its game. I don’t see the Somerset man getting more than 24.5 runs in the first knock here. Re: South Africa vs Australia - Test Series 3rd Test preview: 4pts G.Smith's Performance Pts - Under 86 5/6 Bet365 Graeme Smith isn’t going great guns with the willow at the minute and I see no reason why that will change here. He hasn’t hit a half century in his last 13 knocks in all formats and while his overall record is good at Newlands he has only passed 37 once in his last nine Test knocks here. Given the pressure cooker of a deciding Test and it being a big match for him as a captain his batting could struggle again here so I like the look of his performance failing to total more than 86pts.
