Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Sept 21 Billericay Town away at Carshalton Athletic (13/10 Marathon) With four out of four defeats at home, life isn't getting much easier for Carshalton. The pattern of the season so far offers some grounds for optimism - their approach work is excellent - but their they aren't taking chances and at the other end the defence is easily spooked. Billericay have come through a choppy opening to the season with more signs of coherence, and in Ricky Sappleton have a striker in very good nick. With Glenn Poole out of the picture, the defence needs some work but I think they'll be too streetwise for a young Carshalton. Blyth Spartans away at Witton Albion (11/8 Corals) Tom Wade spent the summer packing his thin Blyth squad with Northern Leaguers but it is has having the desired effect - they are playing good football and in truth might have gathered more points than they've already got. They've only lost to Matlock at home and they remain unbeaten away (though a caveat is that the teams they've faced haven't been that strong - Frickley, SPS, Droylsden and Marine). But it's a good time to be meeting Witton, who are finding it hard to recapture the form of last season. Brian Pritchard is still bringing bodies in and that suggests he's not happy with his summer work - they've lost three at home and only beaten King's Lynn on their own patch, with a late Shaun Tuck goal (he is elsewhere now). They have scored in all their games, so they are not far away, but at the moment Blyth look value. Hitchin Town away at Banbury United (21/10 Marathon) Two young and unpredictable sides meet but the price is too big for me. Banbury did very well against Corby (to my cost) but they haven't kept a clean sheet since the opening day, while Hitchin's problem is taking the chances their excellent football creates. But they were unlucky at Arlesley in the cup and have only been beaten once in the league. It's true, perhaps, that Banbury have a couple of very bright sparks in the side who can turn a game - Kynan Issac, for example - but overall Hitchin look the more complete package and the price is too far out. Bideford away at Arlesley Town (21/10 Marathon) Sean Joyce's Bideford are on a superb and surprising run - unbeaten and playing some very competent stuff. The summer signings seemed at the time to be mere squad-fillers but they've added a physical edge to their game ('they're about two foot taller than last season,' is one comment I've been told) and in Owen Howe (who they took from under the noses of Tiverton) they've found a real goalscoring talent. Arlesey look a touch weaker as a squad with the Dillon/Roberts partnership heading to Chesham, but with James Hatch and Ryan Frater making them tick they are by no means write-offs. A further worry is that Bideford outplayed Poole this week but drew 3-3 because they fell asleep at set-pieces - something a well-drilled Arlesey can exploit. But even taking those bearish points on board the price about an unbeaten Bideford seems too high to me.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Sept 21 biggleswade 6-4 at Redditch,to be honest its more a bet against Redditch who are as poor as ever this season even giving ships a 9-1 winner in atherstone in an fa cup replay Monday night, atherstone incidentally play at step 6 level in my local sides league Bromsgrove sporting . the fallout from this could be dire for a cash struck outfit like Redditch whose budget could be cut even further now that there fa cup run is over before it even began, therefore I am happy to take the 6-4 on biggleswade

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Sept 21 I'm on Billericay, too (my 2nd bet of the season - my 1st on Maidstone away at Cray). I was speaking to a Billericay director today and they are very confident of bagging the points. As an aside - did you folks see this? http://www.billericaytownfc.co.uk/news/chairmans-blog/2062-match-fixing-allegations.html

There are indeed some resonances between Australia and Essex-gate, but until we know of the numbers involved the notion of a conspiracy across the continents remains unproven. Mr Kent was spitting blood last season when the mysterious patterns were reported so he can be forgiven for seizing the chance for a little payback.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Sept 21 Ships - the mysterious patterns didn't just happen last season as I know first hand that it was going on the previous season. The final league fixture was Billericay Vs Lowestoft, which was effectively a 'dead-rubber' as 'ricay had already won the league and LTFC were assured of 3rd place (behind Hornchurch). There was a deluge of money on LTFC on the Friday and Saturday morning and the market was suspended by a few firms. I went to the match and Billericay rested their entire 1st team and LTFC cruised it 1-4 (it might have been 1-5) and Billericay didn't try a jot. I was speaking to a Hornchurch fan a couple of weeks ago and he insinuated that Billericay threw that match and Hornchurch 'knew' it was going down. BTW - I hope this sort of comment doesn't breach forum rules.

That's too much conspiracy for me. I remember that game well and the circumstances. Resting the first team is perhaps surprising but hardly unprecedented and nothing like the sinister and criminal allegations of throwing a match. I don't believe betting was stopped on the match. Strange things happen on the last day but I don't think it's because the Albanian mafia are fixing the game. Does the Hornchurch fan know who shot JFK?

I take your reply as 'tongue-in-cheek' and not being perceived as disingenuous to my comment. Billericay had several corners in the 1st half of that match and had no more than two players in the Lowestoft box for the delivery. They didn't attempt to win the match and I'll categorically state here and now that they threw that match. The alarm bells were ringing back then, Ships and the bookies were one step ahead before they ceased betting on the Essex-3 altogether. The highlight of the day was when Billericay wheeled out their keeper after the match who had been seriously injured a few months prior in a traffic collision. Anyway - tomorrow we all support Billericay (just for 90 minutes, mind you) :-) Edit - the keeper was assaulted outside a club, if memory serves.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Sept 21 I'm surprised to see that the bookies are unable to separate Dulwich Hamlet & Canvey Island, going 6/4 either one, well I think thats a very sporting price about the home team, who have won 3 of their 4 home matches, scoring 11 goals, whilst Canvey have lost 3 of their 4 away games and apparently they were awful in the 2nd half of their derby defeat to Billaricay on Tuesday aftyer being 1-0 up at h-t, in what was 'Ricay's first away win of the season.

Apologies - I am just not a strong believer in conspiracies. It is the randomness and chance aspects of football that make it so appealing as a spectacle and as a betting medium, and pretty unappealing to the criminal classes as a potential fix (snooker, tennis, boxing - now they're different). A fixed or thrown match is something very specific - where a significant number of people are involved in creating a particular outcome for financial gain. That's the tip of the iceberg, and the only bit of the iceberg that matters to the FA, the police and the bookies. Below that there's a huge number of random factors that can influence a semi-pro game - such as a team full of stiffs with one eye on the summer. Fortunately, there are eyes and ears at the bookmakers to monitor football markets and to see where the money is going. They clearly had concerns last season and raised the issue with sufficient vigour that the problem went away. I've heard quite a bit of unofficial comment about this, but I remain a skeptic until I see the full facts on the suspicious games. There is whiffy stuff out there that needs explaining - Grays/FGR a few seasons back - but if you brought every non-league team which wasn't trying 100% for 90 minutes before the FA beak you'd have a very full committee room every Monday morning.

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern & Ryman Prem Sept 21 Poor effort from me today with Hitchin, Bideford and Billericay all failing, but there was a win for Blyth to keep the losses down - they did it with a late goal having been down to ten men for most of the match. Great calls by Bedlam on Dulwich, and BG with an excellent Dulwich-Wealdstone-Hemel treble.
