Re: Emirates Melbourne Cup Day Tuesday 6 November 2012 Even though the Europeans appear to be dominating this race at present I would imagine the Aussies will be trying everything to get the cup back & I like Southern Speed a classy runner at her best (won last years Caulfield Cup) her run in the Cox Plate was excellent staying on over an inadequate trip, she looks a stayer to me & at 50/1 with Bet365 is overpriced

HANDICAPPER Greg Carpenter believes Tuesday's Melbourne Cup shapes as a classic contest between the accomplished and the aspiring, pitting previous winners Dunaden and Americain into battle with unseen Mount Athos and Galileo's Choice. Declaring the 2012 Cup as "challenging the 2010 edition as one of the greatest editions", Carpenter said Dunaden and Americain - winners of the past two cups - were physically equipped to lump huge weights to victory. "That's not the problem," he said of the flying French pair. "Where the problem is that there are horses such as Mount Athos, Galileo's Choice and Ethiopia down in the weights. "They're emerging horses with less weight. "Dunaden and Americain are obviously racing really well and they're big strong horses, but whether they can give weight to those horses remains to be seen." Carpenter believes a host of horses can win the Cup, but yesterday nominated Dunaden, Americain, Ethiopia, Maluckyday, Galileo's Choice, Mount Athos and Red Cadeaux as obvious winning candidates. Carpenter said he did not agree with the Dermot Weld stable that Mount Athos had been "pitched into the cup" with 54kg, compared to Dunaden (59kg) and Americain (58kg). "On what I saw in the Geoffrey Freer (Stakes), I don't think he's the 'peach' that the Europeans do," Carpenter said. Trainer Luca Cumani refuses to split Mount Athos and My Quest For Peace, who has been highly impressive at Werribee this week. Neither does he have any concerns over the fact Ryan Moore will be having his first Australian ride on Mount Athos in the Melbourne Cup. "He's young, he's unafraid and he won't be fazed," Cumani said. "He's very, very committed." Those sentiments were echoed by Kerrin McEvoy, who hailed Moore as "a great rider, very strong and a great judge". Cumani said he is not worried Mount Athos will not have raced for nearly three months going into Tuesday's $6.2 million race. Mount Athos last raced on August 18, sweeping to victory in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes. "If you look at his form he has only had the three runs for me and won them all and there have been big gaps between all three," Cumani said. "He is a horse that likes to run fresh."

Cavalryman~ The boys in blue pin there hopes on this horse with Frankie on board what a way to go out if he could gets this one home for them. They have a pretty could record here without winning it and this horse is massively overpriced IMO has won a couple of C1 race this year in England. I've had some 75 w 17p on betfair (3 places)earlier in the week Bet 365 are currently offering 15 in the place (3) market so helped myself to some of that. Galileos Choice~ Trainer knows what it takes to win this. A dual purpose horse with 8 race wins from just 16 starts only been out of the top three on 3 of its starts. has won upto 14f over flat an 2m1f over hurdles. Very shrewd trainer who lands plots in and out of Ireland and has played down the chances of this horse by saying Mount Athos is handicapped to win the cup, don't be fooled this horse has a big chance and at 16's is a terrific e/w shout and has been given a very good draw. I fancy both horses strongly. Good luck all.

Will he be ok on the harder tracks?There might be a little rain here on Cup day but it looks like the track will be fairly firm.Also does he have a good turn of foot as horses that have that quick sprint at the end always do well.

He like a bit of cut in the ground has won on good ground 4 times the other wins coming in softer. I see the ground is dead 4 at the mo at flemington a drop more juice in the ground would be better so hopefully the rain will come. Likes to be up with the pace in his flat races and will probably kick early and try and hold on. You can watch him run over hurdles

when 2nd to decent hurdler.

Galileo's Choice is Weld's only runner in the race that stops a nation this year as the man who was the first internationally-based trainer to win the race in 1993 with Vintage Crop looks set to win the world's richest handicap race for the third time after also winning with Media Puzzle in 2002. And while Galileo's Choice is priced at between $17 and $21 in the various markets and is not considered to be amongst the top hopes for this year's race, bookies are keeping him safe considering he comes to Australia with a remarkably similar background to Weld's first Cup winner in Vintage Crop. Vintage Crop was famously dismissed as an Irish hurdler - having mixed flat racing with jumps racing - before coming to Australia and changing the face of our greatest race forever with his shock win in 1993. And now Weld is looking for history to repeat itself with Galileo's Choice. A seven-year-old gelding - just like Vintage Crop was in 1993 - Galileo's Choice is lightly raced with just 16 starts with his eight wins and five placings in those starts earning a modest career prize money total of just $244,089. And that is because three of those eight victories have been over the jumps. But at his past two starts Galileo's Choice has carried 61kg to victory in firstly the Listed Challenge Stakes over 2816m at Leopardstown in Ireland before qualifying for a start in the race that stops a nation by winning the Group Three Ballyroan Stakes (2414m) again with 61kg at the same track on August 9. Galileo's Choice drops to 53.5kg for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday and has also drawn well in barrier 11. But it is the forecast of rain for Monday and for Cup Day itself that has the Weld camp really excited that history could repeat itself with Galileo's Choice. "It is critical for him that we get the rain," Mark Weld, son of Dermot, told TVN. "The Flemington track was upgraded to a Good 3 on Derby Day and that is too quick for us and possibly too quick for one or two of the other European horses as well. "But if the rain was to come on Tuesday morning, it would be a big help to us." Galileo's Choice has won his only start on dead ground while in eight starts on slow going he has recorded three wins, four seconds and a third. Flemington track manager Mick Goodie told Channel Seven on Sunday morning he was aiming to produce a Dead 4 rated track with the aim of getting it upgraded to a Good 3 early in Tuesday's 10 race program but the prospect of rain could result in the track being downgraded to at least a Dead 5 or even a Slow 6 come the start of the Melbourne Cup at 3pm.

When Vintage Crop came out of nowhere to win the 1993 Melbourne Cup, it was as if the floodgates were opened to the foreign invaders and it was the beginning of the end for the local stayers. The attitude was that if an Irish-trained jumper could win the race, then local stayers would never be able to compete. In fact, long before Vintage Crop, trained by wily Irishman Dermot Weld, the internationalisation of the Melbourne Cup had begun with the win of Beldale Ball, trained by the late Colin Hayes for Robert Sangster, in 1980, and the buying of horses in Ireland by Lloyd Williams and Kerry Packer in an unsuccessful bid to win the race. Williams would admit that those early forays, which included Gildoran, the original topweight on 59 kilograms for the 1985 Melbourne Cup, who never got to race in Australia, were just ''toe-in-the-water'' stuff but Hayes, who was invariably ahead of his time, saw the possibilities with the likes of Sangster, then the leading owner in European racing, and the emerging oil-rich Dubai sheikhs showing an interest in Australian racing. Hayes won the 1986 Melbourne Cup with At Talaq for Sheikh Hamdan, and his son David was to follow with Jeune in 1994, the year after Vintage Crop, which did nothing to placate those forecasting the demise of the Australian stayers. It seemed even more likely when Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum set up the Godolphin stable in 1992 and began operating on the international scene in 1994, but 28 years later they are still to win the Cup, having taken only minor placings. As Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin's main trainer, said this week as he supervised the work of Lost In The Moment , who finished sixth last year, and Cavalryman: ''We want to win this race, we will never stop trying until we do.'' Yet as the numbers of visiting and imported horses grew each year, it was not until 2002 that Media Puzzle made it two for Weld, and Ireland, much to the chagrin of his English-based rivals. Technically, the David Hains-owned and Bart Cummings-trained Kingston Rule, winner of the 1990 Melbourne Cup, could have been regarded as an imported horse, although he was the result of Hains sending his champion filly Rose Of Kingston to the US to be mated with Triple Crown winner Secretariat. It was only a matter of time for Japanese owners, who had pursued a program of breeding superior stayers, to get in on the act and in 2006, the second year they targeted the race, Japanese-owned horses Delta Blues and Pop Rock ran the quinella. It was immediately forecast that Japanese stayers would dominate the Melbourne Cup for years to come but the arrival of equine influenza put an end to that prediction. Stringent quarantine provisions and difficult travel arrangements have resulted in only one Japanese horse, Tokai Trick, unplaced in 2010, contesting the race. The ever-present dilemma of Australian breeders concentrating on breeding sprinters rather than stayers was overshadowed during the Makybe Diva years, although in our celebration of her record three wins we tended to overlook that she was bred in England but could not attract a bid as a yearling. It was hardly a surprise to anyone with even a passing interest in international racing that over the past 10 years or so, the French middle-distance and staying horses had racked up impressive performances throughout Europe. It was also generally accepted that French racing was more akin to the Australian style than the English. Even so, it is now obvious that the magnificent Americain, who was bred in the US but was trained in France before a failed stint in the US, was an absolute steal at around $240,000 early in 2010 for his Australian owners. It is not surprising that Fabre was keen to join the action, given Americain won the 2010 Melbourne Cup and was a close-up fourth last year to Dunaden, who comes from Chantilly and is trained by Mikel Delzangles, a protege of Americain's trainer Alain de Royer Dupre. With the past two winners on track, along with English stayer Red Cadeaux who just failed last year, this year's Cup can boast the best field for at least the past 20 years. It is just unfortunate that four or five of those knocking on the door will not make the field. The winning chances are many, but one horse not to leave out of any calculations is the Weld-trained Galileo's Choice, while Americain and Dunaden must also be included. THIS year's Melbourne Cup promises to be as much about the horses who made the final field as those who did not. Of course, there will be many who say the Melbourne Cup has been hijacked by ''international'' horses but they do not realise that many of those are now wholly or partly owned in Australia. Such has been the clamour of local owners to be part of the new wave of likely types from Europe that this year there has been a traffic jam of horses trying to make the field of 24. Rather than the fringe dwellers who might have been in the mix in previous years, they include several well-performed horses who would be among the top chances if they got a start. For instance, if anyone asked France's leading trainer Andre Fabre about his highly rated Brigantin missing the race, you would suspect he regarded it as an insult tantamount to a slap in the face. It is the first time Fabre has sent a horse to Australia and it was as if he had accepted that Australian racing was an important part of the international calendar.

Dunaden has every chance in this race despite his draw and the burden of top weight. He won his prep race for this very nicely, coming from well off the pace and having to come very wide. He won cosily that day and he looks set to put up a very strong defence of his crown. If the weight does come into play at the business end then one that can take advantage is Ethiopia. This horse was the first horse ever to win the Australian Derby as a maiden. He has been tried at various trips since but never over anything than 12f which is strange. His trainer says he is a stayer in the making and has a massive aerobic capacity. He comes into this race having ran well in the Cox Plate despite a change of tactics and wearing blinkers for the first time. I feel more patient tactics on Tuesday will see this potentially classy stayer go very close, getting plenty of weight from the market principals.

I suggest you have us on and the ATR pictures in the background as no doubt ATR will have Chapman on. As for the race I think Dunaden is a cracking e/w bet. I really can't see him being out of the first four and his Caulfield Cup efforts is one the best I have seen from any horse in a handicap. I know it has been years since a horse carried his weight to victory, but this horse has proven class and I think he can get away with it. Also although Williams messed up big time at Ascot in his home country he is the best around and the ride at Caulfield was different class.

IT is nothing new for champion Irish trainer Dermot Weld to be in Australia with a horse that is ready and able to win the Melbourne Cup. What is unusual about Weld's latest visit is that he is happy with the condition of the Flemington track as he is with his Cup runner Galileo's Choice. Weld, who arrived in Melbourne on Sunday to oversee his 10th Cup mission, is the only foreign trainer to have won Australia's greatest race twice, having succeeded in 1993 with Vintage Crop and in 2002 with Media Puzzle. Almost every one of those visits has been accompanied by a concerted plea for more water to be put onto the track. This year though, he is content. â€œIt's the best I've seen the Flemington track look in 20 years,â€ Weld said. â€œIt's firmer than I'd like, but you never know, we might get a spot of rain.â€ The clear impression is that if some rain fell before the race, Galileo's Choice would find a few lengths. A seven-year-old veteran of only 16 starts, Galileo's Choice comes to Melbourne without having run in Weld's favoured Cup lead-up, the Irish St Leger. Like Vintage Crop, however, he has been toughened up with a couple of hurdle runs, having won over the jumps four runs back. Again, as Vintage Crop did, he was also off colour when he arrived in Melbourne, suffering with so-called transit fever. â€œWe had a problem when he arrived with a very high temperature from his transit fever,â€ Weld said. â€œBut he's responded very well, and fortunately he bounced back quick.â€ Despite his jumping preparation, Weld described Galileo's Choice as a â€œslightly delicate horseâ€. â€œBut he's also very talented, he's clean-winded and he likes to be kept fresh.â€ Freshness is something he won't be short of. Galileo's Choice has raced four times this year, winning a hurdle at Fairyhouse in February, finishing seventh in the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham in March and then winning a Listed 2800m race on the flat in July before a last start success in a Group III over 2400m On August 9. Weld believes Galileo's Choice would have won the Irish St Leger if he'd run in it and he also believes he can win him a third Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. â€œIt's a very good Melbourne Cup, a better one than most years,â€ he said. â€œBut I'm sure he'll represent us very well ... he won't let anybody down. Really love this race, for me it's the ultimate one, the biggest show on turf, the one race I'm really looking forward to. It's not the best race in the world in terms of quality, but the anticipation before the race is just something special. I'd never get up early in the morning at three o'clock for anything else than the Melbourne Cup. I think this years renewal looks really strong and exciting but with the likely wet conditions in mind I think there are two horses really overlooked in the betting market... Fiorente @ 34/1 win + @ 10/1 place & Tac De Boistron @ 80/1 win + 22/1 place Bet365 Fiorente is only one week in Australia now and never raced Down Under but that is the only negative fact regarding his chance I think. He worked fantastically according to his trainer and the jockey in the last days and looks to be very fine and happy. That's good to hear indeed. I think the form book tells an interesting story saying that he is not far of the standard of the horses at the top of the market. He won very well a Group 2 at Newmarket in July, beating Red Cadeaux convincingly there. He finished 2nd last to Orvefre in the Prix Foy then but this race was never ran to suit him. Fiorente is still lightly raced though and will have his first try over 2m. As his sire Monsun has a 21% strike rate with his offspring over distances of14f + - siring a G1 winner over 20f and another couple of good stayers - I think it's not too unlikely that he gets the trip well enough. The nature of the race, the Melbourne Cup, should actually suit him as he likes to race handy which should allow him to get a good position early on from a low draw. He's versatile regarding the ground, having some form on fast ground, his best form came on a slow surface though which means he should be suited by the underfoot conditions tomorrow anyway. His Princess of Wales's Goldsmiths Stakes win entitles him to be in with a big chance in this race and first time blinkers smay help him to find some further improvement too . Tac De Boistron is a horse that loves soft conditions so the rain forecast for Melbourne is sure to suit him very well. The horse is already in Australia for a couple weeks and raced in the Geelong Cup which was only a prep run for the Melbourne Cup over a trip that is normally too sharp though. This horses is a real stayer and if you watch the replay of his Group 2 win in the Prix Maurice De Nieuil from last July you only can be impressed with him. He was very badly hampered in the closing stages, bumped into the rails but really finished like a train nonetheless, outstaying Vadamar, who looked the certain winner a couple of yards out just to win it on the line. He really improved this year as a five year old anyway but has a decent enough looking form from 2011 over 2 miles when finishing 2nd in a Group 3 and an excellent 4th in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak. He's able to race of a light weight tomorrow though and I see him having a very decent chance to run very well. Concern is the wide draw obviously, but that doesn't always has to hinder a horse to run well and he stays all the way.

Green Moon has done well since going down under and although he disappointed in the Cox Plate I think it was a case of not handling the track and he has a very good record at Flemington. The other horse I like is Mourayan who I really fancied for the race last year until he came out on the day. He seems to be coming nicley into form and won a G3 at Randwick in Sydney last time. If it rains Americain comes right into it and Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos are the other dangers

Some patchy rain across Melbourne on Monday is expected to clear on Melbourne Cup Day, the Flemington track is currently rated Dead and likely to have a touch of give so should be suitable for most runners. Rail is out 2m after racing here on Saturday which will have little impact on the pattern of racing, although the ground will be better away from the inside rail later in the day. Expect them to head to the centre of the course in races run down the straight, barriers will be of little importance all races. The stellar field features the previous two French-trained winners of the race, an entry from Godolphin, a Dermot Weld raider as well as a former star of the turf in Italy amongst others - it really is a fascinating race for punters to sink their teeth into. The favourite for the 152nd edition of the Melbourne Cup is currently Mount Athos, who has seen a surge of last cash and is best-priced at 6/1 with Stan James to take the prize back to Newmarket in Britain. Luca Cumani's five-year-old will be bidding to become the 34th winning favourite of the race - last year punters were pretty accurate as the favourite Americain ran a big one in fourth and the winner Dunaden was strongly fancied to go close at 15/2. This will be Mount Athos' first run in the Southern Hemisphere, but since he was moved to Newmarket, Dr Marwan Koukash's son of Montjeu has won his three starts in the manner of a really progressive gelding. He thrashed Brown Panther last time out at Newbury in a Group Three off level weights, and although Brown Panther has since run a shocker at Longchamp, you cannot take anything away from Mount Athos, who also relishes fast ground which he gets here and has experience in huge handicaps. Ryan Moore rides him and his draw in eight looks ideal - lower-drawn horses tend to fare better than those with outside barriers. Keeping company with Mount Athos at the top of the market is 2010 winner Americain, who is 6/1 with Paddy Power. The owners have jocked-off Gerald MossÃ© who is having such a fantastic season, but he ran well last time out when fourth to Dunaden in the Caulfield Cup. He is a proper stayer who should be hard to keep out the frame, and he is drawn just one stall wider in 12 than he had in his winning year. Trainer Alain de Royer-DuprÃ© has had a couple of disappointments sending horses to the U.S. recently, but Americain will have been campaigned with this in mind and his handler said he was short of fitness prior to Caulfield. The other horse bidding to become the sixth multiple winner of the race is Dunaden, who has an impeccable record at this time of year and can be supported at 13/2 with William Hill. Dunaden took the Hong Kong Vase after his narrow success here last year, and has since taken on some top European turf performers over middle distances. At Royal Ascot he had a troubled passage but was good enough to finish second to Sea Moon, but it is down here where he thrives - his form figures in Australia are 111. Jockey Craig Williams has been bullish in the lead-up to the race, but he winless from 9 Cup attempts (Lemaire partnered Dunaden last year). Last year's runner-up Red Cadeaux is 12/1 with bet365 and is on most shortlists. He was behind Dunaden at Royal Ascot in the Hardwicke, but there is every chance that he will be primed to run for his life here. Michael Rodd's mount gets 3.5kg in the weights from Dunaden, but his barrier in 18 has never supplied a winner of the Cup. Connections could not find a suitable prep race in Australia for him so he comes here having not run for 117 days. Irish hopes rest with Dermot Weld's Galileo's Choice, a 12/1 shot with Paddy Power who has extremely useful form both on the level and over hurdles (started favourite for the opening race of this year's Cheltenham Festival). Weld has won this race twice before with Media Puzzle and Vintage Crop, so he knows what it takes, and his stable remains in fine form after two big wins on British Champions Day at Ascot last month and a good effort from Speaking Of Which at the Breeders' Cup meeting. The fast ground is a slight concern though, but his odds compensate for that if you are interested. Maluckyday is 14/1 with Sky Bet and represents the best local hope behind the Euros in the betting. Maluckyday suffered from a bout of pneumonia but has made a remarkable comeback from the brink - he was second to Americain in this two years ago as a four-year-old and jockey Jim Cassidy has won the Cup twice before. Green Moon is 16/1 but flopped badly in the Cox Plate, so is hard to fancy, whilst 18/1 shot My Quest For Peacelooks a good outside bet, despite being Cumani's second-string. He has Group race form in Britain and his fifth to Dunaden was a fair effort on his run in Australia. The name change from 'Quest For Peace' may be a good omen - horses whose names begin with M have won 12 Cups, whilst Q has been luckless. Lights Of Heaven is being backed and is 20/1 with Betfred - Black Caviar's stablemate was third in the Dunaden prep and whilst Peter Moody rates the French challenge, he thinks it is an even race and is hopeful of a big run. Cavalryman would be a tremendous winner for Frankie Dettori on one of his final high-profile rides for the outstanding Godolphin operation. Frankie is riding freelance next year and this 25/1 poke was third in Sea The Stars' Arc, so can deliver on the big stage. A final mention goes to Jakkalberry who has been overlooked at 66/1 with Stan James. Marco Botti is one of the best trainers around and Jakkalberry should strip fitter for his prep - this will be just his sixth race this year so he should have plenty to give if today is a going day. The Cup is off at 3.00pm local time on Tuesday 6 November, which is 4am on Tuesday morning for UK-based punters. Bookies are paying out four places for each-way bets.
