In psychological terms, people tend to overvalue a small probability of a high return and undervalue a high probability of a small return. The big teams genuinely give you a small return. To some extent, the bookies are willing to sell the volatility on these matches in exchange for reduced vigorish. Btw Its a good idea. I thought about doing this a year and a half ago when I noticed betting the big teams would have yielded an attractive monthly profit. Things nosedived a bit since then though, but I think the system is still in profit. I wasn't eliminating derbies, which sounds like an important tweak.
