  1. Nyquist did the business in the Kentucky Derby, with Exaggerator finishing like a train.

Hard to see beyond those two for the Preakness.

Prices are are 4/6 and 7/2 with Bet365, who offered 1/4 odds place on Kentucky Derby, but only 1/5 here. Little point in backing Exaggerator EW.

I think I'll go with Exaggerator to win.

  2. A colleague suggested that maybe Paddy, Betfair, Batdaq don't have licensing rights to use Churchill Downs results for betting purposes.

If so, I didn't realise permission (doubtless with payment) was required to make a market on foreign racing.

  3. Here's a piece of trivia.

I believe that going back many years, each way was generally handled differently "up north". They tended to use what was termed: "each way, all each way". So a £1 ew treble would still cost £2, but the bet would be:

    £1 each way on A

any to come, each way on B

any to come, each way on C

[I have one of my late father's each way doubles ready reckoners. It's in £sd. I don't know if "ew, all ew" is still available. I think the OP would have been better off this way.]

  4. I hope this has not been covered elsewhere as my my previous post was (hides head in shame).

I noticed this on another forum; and it's true.

    http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/racing-uk-leicester-and-stratford-set-for-switch-to-ruk/2027591/#newsArchiveTabs=last7DaysNews

I'm not a big Jockey Club fan (= R-UK). I could explain why.

I don't have R-UK, and my betting does not, and will not justify the 25/month. Like many, I get ATR on Virgin (even the lowest pack); Sky have it from their 2nd lowest pack. [Strange when I think it's a Sky run channel.]

To attract new people, racing needs a free (or very near free) TV outlet. Leaving the FTA BBC, and accepting Pay TV money has hurt (example) Rugby League interest in the sport for short term gain.

  5. I expect the presenters on Ch4 will simply be poached over to ITV 1/4 and we wont see much difference. Ch4 coverage is IMHO pretty decent, but most of us would like it a bit more gambling oriented (less trainer's yards and jockey interview stuff for me). Years ago, I suggested Morning Line should have the last 10 minutes on sports betting. Apparantly, it was considered, but didn't happen. Maybe some remember a sports betting show that used to follow Morning Line, hosted by Derek McGovern.

Re UTV, I bought shares in UTV which declined, then I sold, at which point they started rising on speculation that ITV maybe interested in acquiring. I thought UTV programming would be 99% the same as ITV.

Picture quality is quite poor on ITV4 (low bit rate), simlar to ATR. Not comparable to Ch4 HD.

  6. I received this below by e-mail and PL message.

I also note the kitchem spam.

Time to clean out the user base, I think.

  7. Further to the pushing of AW down our throats by creeping gradualism.

I thought bumpers were supposed to be an introduction to NH, just before starting hurdling. If Lingfield wants to run its bumpers on the AW surface, then the only difference from AW flat is no stalls, heavier jockeys and a usually longer distance of 2 miles. There's little to do with NH.

I ask myself why, and can only conclude there is much less maintenance to an AW surface than a turf surface, so it seems money driven.

It was sad to lose Folkestone and Hereford, but ARC seem in love with AW, eg Newcastle.

  8. Monday, 30 Nov.

So here we are, getting into prime jumps season, yet they decide to give us 2 all weather flat meetings and just one jumps meeting at Plumpton. It wouldn't be so bad if one of the flat meeting was an evening card.

(As usual, nothing from Ireland on a Monday.)

  9. This Thread:
I hope we can get the banter going again, especially after the demise of another forum. I'm not sure a dedicated racing banter thread is such a good idea though, as if two or more topics are being discussed, a "reply" looks like it's a follow-on from the latest post. Would it be better to start a new thread for every topic?

TV Coverage: I see ITV are interested in bidding against Ch4 for coverage. People should be careful what they wish for. Ch4 coverage isn't bad, and much of the stick MF and GC take is unjustified. Maybe ITV would put it on ITV4 and keep it gambling oriented. ITV1 is so populist and full of reality shows.  By sports rights standards, the price is cheap. One thing that does annoy me on Ch4 is when (as the horses are loading) GC or Emma will ask Jim McGrath if he has had a bet, and what. Useless - I want to hear that 10 minutes earlier.
