Don't worry though, with only 4 of the first week runners turning up, and 3 new ones, the league is very open with plenty of scope to catch up. Add in to the mix that it's PLO week in leg 3, and anything can happen!

I think field size is a double edged sword, but in my opinion is not the right question. You need to combine it with buy in and speed of the levels.
A big field with a low buy in usually attracts plenty of bad players. So you have to be aggressive early and make sure you get your share of their chips.  A fast tournament turns things into a shot-out, where you MUST gamble to get somewhere. This is not an ideal situation, because your ability to stay patient and play premium hands is undermined.
The biggest problem with a big field is that you will be going 'all-in' more often. Very infrequent that you play a tourn and don't have to risk your life in it a few times. Particularly annoying when you have invested 5 hours in something to be donked out by the village idiot. Not like you can reload (ie cash game).  SO if you are in a tournament like this, you need to take some calculated risks earlier,  and build a helthy stake early. Otherwise, you come to the last 2 tables hanging on in any case.
I think you need to look at field quality. The easiest way to do this online or live is to play the same tournament regularly. You pick up the vibe. How long does it take, which players to avoid, where is the easy money. If you have a limited amount of time, field size is a big deal. No good starting a tournament at 8pm, and getting to the business end at 2 in the morning. When you need to be your sharpest your batteries are running  low.

It's been a long time but I plan to try to play on Wednesday. I just joined PokerStars with alias PantherKick100.

The Punters Lounge £150 added Poker League continues this week with our September league.  All games are played in the PokerStars Home Games PL Poker Club.  This month will feature a PLO leg in week 3 with the other 3 legs NLHE.
 > Leg 1 : Wednesday 4th September at 20.00 GMT in the PL Poker Club Home Game.
 > Leg 2 : 11th September
 > Leg 3 : 18th September - PLO Leg
 > Leg 4 : 25th September - double entrants in formula *
Buy in is $5.50 per leg.
To help boost numbers overall and in particular in the final leg we will again trial the system of doubling the number of entries used in the calculation in leg 4 ( * so if 12 entries the formula will use 24 entrants). This will increase the number of points available in the final leg to make it more competitive.
Your top 3 scores of the 4 legs will count towards your league total. We will be using the usual PL league format, which will be updated in this thread. (The PokerStars own league scores will not be used.) Formula is -Log(position/Entrants)x100
All members are welcome, however you must post in this thread if asked to let us know your forum username, otherwise your placings and scores cannot be included in the league.  Please spread the word and invite your friends so we can get the weekly numbers to keep this league viable.  New players always welcome to join in.

It seems a fairer system, and I'm happy for it to continue. I would have been embarrassed to take 1st place after Leo's superb run this month. This month was slightly unusual, in that two of the money places were pretty much decided. I think it will be far more competitive in the last leg in most future months.

Difficult to assess how successful the double runners is, with Leo running away with the first 3 legs! However numbers in the final leg held up pretty well so doesn't seem to have put off too many from trying.
It's a fairer system in that it's not too heavily weighted towards the final leg. Had we continued the double points, on this month's results muttley's final leg win would have taken the league top spot (he did have 2 previous 2nd place finishes in leg 2 and 3), despite Leo winning all the other legs.
We'll continue to run with it next month.
