  1. The company which created the Virtual Grand National a few weeks ago has been commissioned by NBC to do a Virtual Kentucky Derby to feature the 13 horses that have won the US Triple Crown from Sir Barton in 1919 to Justify in 2018

The virtual race will be broadcast by NBC on the original date for the race, May 3rd

The real life race has been put back to September

I expect it'l get shown over here probably on Sky Sports Racing

List of US Triple Crown Winners .....

    Sir Barton 1919
    Gallant Fox 1930
    Omaha 1935
    War Admiral 1937
    Whirlaway 1941
    Count Fleet 1943
    Assault 1946
    Citation 1948
    Secretariat 1973
    Seattle Slew 1977
    Affirmed 1978
    American Pharoah 2015
    Justify 2018

I've heard of all of them from Secretariat onwards

Secretariat is an icon of the sport and Seattle Slew and Affirmed appear as sires in lots of pedigrees from the 80s onwards

Obviously now that we're all experts on American racing I expect a vigorous debate as to the win, place and show ......... ?

I'll go for Secretariat. I think he probably fills the same place over there that Red Rum does over here , ie the only racehorse that 90% of the population has ever heard of

  2. I'm not so bothered about the jockeys ..... to be honest I don't pay a lot of attention to jockeys over here either

Apart from the absolute top boys like Moore and Dettori I don't think there's much between them. They're all capable of good and bad rides and as there's no way to know in advance which they're going to do in any given race its not worth spending much time on. In general I just figure the best jockeys tend to be on the best horses and that's why they win more races

Not sure how it works in the US but with the huge distances and a lot of training done on track and in the current 'behind closed doors' scenario I expect there's a pool of jockeys at each track. I don't know enough about them to put much weight on the jockey when I'm making my picks but I don't suppose at Tampa or Will Rogers you've got the equivalent of Moore or Dettori helicoptering in to ride a blue blood maiden debutante for Middle Eastern Royalty !

I supose all you can do is look at the last few meetings and take a bit of comfort if the jockey on your horse has ridden a winner or two

  3. Sha Tin Group One Sprint

7.50 - A lot of these group race sprinters in HK also run in handicaps and the top performer on ratings is Hot King Prawn who recently won a handicap off 125 with several of todays opponents behind him and now reopposing on worse terms. Voyage Warrior beat him last time in a group 2 and looks to be on the up. However he is drawn wide today which will make it more difficult to make all as he did last time. Current favourite is Aethero, the only 3 year old in the field. He flopped on his reappearance but is reported working well in trackwork. As an EW shot I like Mr Stunning who is often thereabouts in the big races and is a big price.

Selection - Hot King Prawn 2/1 betvictor
EW shot - Mr Stunning 18/1 betvictor

4 wins , a non runner and an abysmal ride on the 'nap'

A query for someone .  Am I right in assuming we dont get  'best odds' on these US and Australian races . I'm with sky bet and they dont seem to .

    Thanks in advance

pretty sure none of the UK bookies offer 'Best Odds Guaranteed' on overseas racing

    well done with the winners!

  5. I don't want to spend hours on HK but might as well have a horse in each race for something to watch on telly (with the sound down and Talksport 2 on the radio !)

So I'm doing quick selections on the same basis as for Big Handicaps over here...........so it's youngest 2 age groups, distance winners, lowest half of draw, if more than 1 left just go by the Racing Post comment or jockey name ....... and EW if it's a double figure price, Win for single figure odds

Not overly scientific but there is logic behind the selection process and it's quick ! .......... ?

    12.15 - Blade Racer - 14/1 Skybet EW

Been having a look at the US site that BH found and playing around with some of the info

Thought I'd do a simple totting up of the plus points ...... for each of the Speed, Pace and Class pages there are 3 categories and the top 3 in each category get a green line

So I've just counted the number of green lines for each horse .......... maximum points would be 9 for a horse in the top 3 in each of the 3 categories on each of the 3 pages

Here's the top 3 in the first 5 races at Will Rogers Downs with current Bet365 prices

    Points, Horse, Odds

    7.15

    8 - Quiet Spring 14/1 (2nd)

    7 - Kiana;s Love 11/8 (3rd)

    6 - Broke Financing 11/2

    7.45

9 - Owen The Great 11/4 (WON - dead heat)

    6 - Assay 2/1 (3rd)

    5 - Proud Moments 4/1  (WON - dead heat)

    8.15

    7 - Cheers and Prayers 9/2 (WON)

    6 - Soul of Discretion 8/1 (3rd)

    5 - Unleash The Beast 4/1 (2nd)

    8.45

    6 - Indian Gem 7/2

    6 - Baronet 16/1 (2nd)

    5 - Paddy O 6/5

    9.15

    9 - Southgate 7/4 (3rd)

    8 - Great Faces 15/8  (2nd)

4 joint - Caneys Ghost 7/2  (WON) and Khola 11/1

Let's see how they get on ........... ?

Not bad I suppose ...... would have come out on top with the two top rated winners and the two big priced ones both finished 2nd for EW punters

    prices bet365

    4 x £5 doubles

bit of a bonus as I thought my horse had been nutted on the line but they gave a dead heat ! .... half stake reduces the winnings somewhat but keeps a good run going

    returns 42.21, profit 22.31, bank 1216.93
