Systemight got a reaction from Zilzalian in SPEED RATINGS
As a young man i did speed figures for two year olds on the flat(there was no all weather racing back then) and had some success, and certainly a lot better knowledge of the form book.
However, while i started with enthusiasm,i soon found the workload a bit of a chore, particularly when the losing runs hit. What finally put me off then(as still happens now),was the constant moving of the rails making distances longer or shorter than the officially stated. Thus (to my eyes at least), made the ratings at best unreliable.
Interesting to see him mentioned here, and as an author i think Nick Mordin had few peers, indeed his book "Betting For a Living" was in my opinion the best book on horse racing betting that i have ever read. His book on speed ratings however lagged behind Andy Beyer's work "Beyer On Speed"(again only in my opinion).
One must remember that Nick Mordin's phoneline (as there was back then) was regularly listed as one of the most unprofitable Horse Racing service around, costing his devoted followers dear-clearly the man could talk the talk, but couldn't really walk the walk-well not when the money was down anyway.
Nick was last heard of having retired from Journalism to go and live in South Africa,a big loss to us all, as he had many thought provoking and innovative ideas...

Totally agree.
I guess i am old enough to remember when the top hurdlers of their time Sea Pigeon,Birds Nest,Dramatist,Night Nurse,Monksfield,Beacon Light etc seemed to race each other nearly every other week, even Desert Orchid used to be a standing dish on most Big Race Saturdays.
Actually I think it was Nicky Henderson that started this trend with the former Champion Hurdler (See You Then) many years ago, where he was seen that little on the racecourse the press used to nickname him "See You When"..Lol

Systemight reacted to BillyHills in Racehorse Syndicates
The welcome pack arrived this morning so its starting to feel real now. Can log in now to the members section of the site so should be able to access more info.
Word from the yard is that the horse has grown physically since arriving but no plans in place for a start over hurdles as yet.

Systemight got a reaction from BillyHills in Racehorse Syndicates
Been to Bangor a couple of times but there is no grandstand and you have to watch the finishes head on,it's not for me,but each to their own.
May i put forward a syndicate i almost joined earlier in the year,,,
Its called the Inspire Racing club,..they sponsored a race day at Stratford in April and i had long chats with both the co-ordinators of the club and indeed some of the members, all the feedback i had was good.
Unfortunately the majority of their trainers trained a fair way from me,so reluctantly i decided to knock it on the head(they were even going to give me a £100 quid discount as part of the promotion for the day..doh!)
Must add my best wishes to Billy in his new venture, hope Last Golden Ticket gets his head in front for you..

Ok, day 1 of the project
The Purchase
I have purchased a share in a horse called Last Golden Ticket and it will be trained by Donald McCain
The syndicate is part of the Owners Group who also own Axiom and Elite Racing.
The share was just £53 for 12 months and there are 3,000 shares available.
(before anyone says anything i'm not expecting any R.O.I in this project, just the involvement)
I have been promised visits to the yard, a chance of an owners badge when it runs and a share out in any prize money the horse may win. We also get a monthly magazine and a texts about other information about the horse, entries and trainers feedback.
It was a toss up between going with this syndicate or trying the Racing Emporium which is run by the Easterby brothers in Yorkshire. Similar ways in which it is run but mainly flat horses.
I chose this syndicate and this particular horse as its not far from me, Donald McCain is 60 miles up the road so will be able to take advantage of any stable visits and also i'm gambling on him running the horse at Bangor, Haydock, Aintree or Carlisle which are within easy reach.
There are other horses available including the old boy Alcala trainer by Paul Nicholls, he is being aimed at the big Hunter Chases this season and is only £40 a share. Nicholls trains in Somerset and is just too far away for me.
The Horse
Last Golden Ticket
The horse is a 4yo that has had one run in a bumper for Gordon Elliott. He won that day in July at Sligo and has since been sold for around £50,000 from what i can gather.
He will be aimed at Novice Hurdles this season and being closely related to Golden Chieftain he could make up into a useful chaser. There is an option to carry on with the share as long as you want, also you can quit after 12 months is up.
I have been promised a welcome pack within 7 days so will report back when I know anything else

Systemight reacted to MCLARKE in Daily Singles, Doubles, Trebles and Trixies
Good luck with this.
In terms of doubles v singles it reminds me of the story of the man who was due to have an audience with the Pope in Rome. Just before his audience the pope's aide told him that the pope had died in the night so the audience would not go ahead. It would be officially announced later that day.
The man had a friend back in England who was a gambler so he phoned him and told him to bet all his money on the death of the pope. The bookies offered odds of 500/1.
When he got back home he excitedly asked his friend how much they had won.
"Nothing" his friend said.
"What do you mean, nothing !"
His friend said "I had him in a double with the Archbishop of Canterbury !"
Conclusive proof my friend that singles are better than doubles !

Systemight reacted to LeMale in Racing Chat - Sat July 13th
Thanks Systemight and i agree with alot of things you have mentioned. As for Jamie Spencer i also agree,he was just along for the ride on Escobar, the horse won the race and didn't need any help from the jockey.(only rode it home in last few yards and NO use of the whip at all that i could see which is good because it wasn't needed) So not knocking Spencer but you're right no praise needed either he just did his job well. Commentators said that is his STYLE of riding but i'm too inexperienced to know what that really means as i've not seen him in action that often. Anyway hope your day at York was enjoyable(and profitable) i'm sure it was...who doesn't like a day at the races!!!

Systemight got a reaction from LeMale in Racing Chat - Sat July 13th
Hi LeMale,
Totally understand how you feel, i have had several bets this National Hunt season on horses who have paid the ultimate price (fell/broke down etc, etc) and it always makes me feel guilty about loving this game so much.A horse broke down and had to be put to sleep when in front 2 out at Uttoxeter a couple of weeks ago and it just totally ruined the afternoon for me.
Although i am a racing fanatic,i am an animal lover too,and nothing annoys me more than when i see a jockey giving a horse an extra slap of the whip,"just to make sure",when its quite obvious he has the race already won.Personally i would be an advocate of hands and heels only races..
I was at York today and was quite surprised about how lauded Spencer was for his ride on Escobar(particularly after his rather average effort on Raheen House half an hour earlier). While Escobar can be a tricky customer, he was easily the best horse in the race and any jockey worth his salt would surely have won on him such was his superiority over his rivals. Not into jockey bashing at all,but there were several much better rides given today at York that in comparison hardly got a mention..
Anyway now i have got that off my chest, congratulations on your fantastic day, hope it's the start of many..:)
