Golf: US Open 2010

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Loving This Open, with the changing venue and the tough layout it always leads to some thinking time. Just got three bets to put up at the moment but will be back with more fore sure. David Duval @ 251 ew 6places betfred Theres not much to be said here. In the last year he has two finishes that have been inside the top 30, they were both runner up finishes. One was at the US Open last year, the other was at Pebble Beach this year. Im not really sure I need to say much more. At the price that's being offered with 6 places it's definitely worth a dabble! Ricky Barnes @ 126 ew 6 places BetFred Barnes is a player who really plays up to elite fields. In his last 28 starts he has 6 top 10s and 3 top 5s, two of these top 10s have been in majors (last years USO and this years Masters) and he also had a 3rd place last time out in the elite Memorial field. He comes in to the event off that mentioned 3rd place, and a 7th the week before at Colonial. In addition to this, he has local links having grown up close by playing Pebble Beach a number of times (he says 30+ full rounds). He also grew up putting on these poa annua greens so his local links may give him a little bit of extra help and motivation. Steve Marino Top 10/20 @ 19/6 WillHill/PaddyPower Marino is a guy who deserves a win but I'm not convinced has it in him. He has the game, just not the fortitude. However, if good finishes and prices are your after (which we are) and lots of cash is what hes after (which he is) then that's ok! Has finished in the top 20 7times in his last 13 events which includes a T14 on his debut at the Masters. Finished 4th here at Pebble Beach this season. He is a great driver of the ball, solid ball striker and good putter so has the type of all round game which should thrive on this course. GL:hope

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Lee Westwood Top 10 (inc. ties) @ 2.25 ExtraBet I honestly believe this is a monster price. Westwood is as short as 10/1 with some bookies and deservedly so; however, I dont really feel he will win the thing as he confirmed at the St Jude that he still isnt quite the tournament finisher he used to be. Add to this that in 78years only one European has won this tournament so I'm willing to give him a pass. His recent top 10 record, however, is absolutely stunning. Everyone talks about his 3 top 3s in the last 3 majors - true...and that doesnt hurt the argument. However, what really supports this bet is that in his last 24 stroke play tournaments, he has 19 top 10s - that is a top 10 ratio with equivalent odds of 1.26. Ok, you're not going to bet on him at that price but he finished in the top 10 here in 2000, has that stunning recent record and should be buoyant after his win on the weekend. An outstanding price IMO. GL:hope

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Retief Goosen to Place @ 11 BetFair Goosen is not only a US Open specialist but a quality player who consistently challenges. He's not quite the ice cool finisher he used to be but in his last 45 starts (yep, its that long!) he has finished in the top 5 13times which definitely doesnt equate to the 10/1 on offer! He has won the US Open twice, and finished 12th the last time it was held here. To add to this he also finished 3rd at Pebble Beach last year so has some decent recent form here. His form this year is decent with 4 top 5s in America in 9 starts so again, it doesnt equate to the 10/1 on offer! His stats also back up my faith in him - 37th in driving accuracy, 23rd in total driving, 28th in putting, 10th in birdie conversion, and 24th in scrambling which is a key stat here. There is one thing...he has been injured recently but on his come back last week he managed a top 15 performance and played great stuff for the last 3 rounds with 68-68-68 hitting over 70% of fairways while still hitting it nearly 300yards, hitting 70% of greens and taking 28 putts/round. I feel he showed that his fitness is fine and he is very much ready for this tournament. The price is extremely good! GL:hope

Couldn't agree more mate. That looks a huge price given his form recently and in recent majors. I'm jumping aboard too :ok.

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Ok so, here goes...my two main picks for the US Open, and they could be two of the most boring picks around. Not boring as in predictable (although they should really be auto picks for this course), but they are truly unfashionable and thus their prices are too big. On both of these players I will be sacrificing a little bit of the price for the extra place on offer at different bookmakers. Steve Stricker @ 36 ew BetFred 6 places This guy is just getting back from injury but signs from both the Colonial and Memorial were pretty good where he just got back to normal, hitting fairways, hitting greens, and holing the ball. So why do we get the world no.4 at such a great price? Honestly I have no idea. 4 wins in his last 22 starts is a fantastic ratio and add in his 12 top 6s (this bets ew payout) in 32 attempts and it's really looking pretty good. He has the right game for pebble beach and is in the top 30 for accuracy, and 5th for putting. He doesnt hit enough greens, sitting 82nd for that stat, but when he does he is top 25 for proximity which is great for these small greens. More importantly, he is 2nd for scrambling so when he does miss the green, he doesnt often miss par! He has already won on a par 71 in California this year at the Northern Trust Open and finished top 15 last time he played at Pebble Beach in 2006 when he was half the player he is today. If the wind blows he should be ok as he has shown that he is a good links/wind player finished top 8 in The Open in both 2007 and 2008. He actually has 3 top 6 finishes in his 14 US Open starts so again it shows he is suited to the game but this really is his best chance by a long way. If he's ever going to win a major, this really could be the week he should do it. Tote are offering 22s so the 35s on offer with 6 places are greatly received! Jim Furyk @ 31 ew ToteSport 6 places So from the no.4 in the world, I move to the no.5 in the world. If you had to build a player to play in the US Open, he would probably play in the same way as Jim Furyk (just with a more conventional swing). In his 15 US Opens he has 5 top 5s including his 1 major win in 2003. He actually player here in 2000 but one bad round when the wind blew threw off course to come anywhere near the top; however, by all accounts the weather will be much better this week. Even if the wind does blow, I'm still content with Furyk and he has proved with his 6 top 12 finishes in the Open he can deal with linksy conditions. Has also finished in the top 6 at Pebble Beach 4 times so clearly feels comfortable at the course. His current form is good with 2 wins this year (including the verizon heritage which is a tight, seaside, windy, small greened course - very similar to the layout of pebble beach) and he also finished 10th last week at Memorial so is clearly still playing well. 6th in Driving Accuracy, 23rd in putts/round, 6th in scrambling, and 7th in proximity to the hole all bode well for the one time major champion to add another US Open to his trophy cabinet. The guy is a class player and at the price on offer, considering the year he's having, he looks a good bet. GL:hope

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Ryan Moore 23/5 e/w 5 places Betfair I think that the heavy rough that always seems to be a big part a U.S Open means that driving will be key. Moore has a driving accuracy of 71% (ranked 7th) on the US tour this year which should allow him to steer clear of the rough and more importantly put his ball in a position to avoid missing the greens on the wrong side which can be so damaging round Pebble Beach. He is also ranked 36th on tour in putting this year which he will need if the greens threaten to be as quick as they tend to be at the US Open. He also has some decent history in the event having finished 10th last year. That coupled with a decent finish of 14th at the Masters will hopefully mean that he is ready to come up with a top 5 finish here. I have to agree with hornet_18 that Retief Gooson (11 @ betfair for a top 5 place) is great value considering his past performances in this tournament. Good luck to all!

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Really surprised at the lack of interest in this tournament :eek. I'm on Hornet's Westwood bet but going with a few outrights myself. All to 1/4 odds. 1pt ew L.Donald to win US Open 33/1 William Hill (5 places) Luke Donald is playing well again having won in Madrid 3 weeks ago. He then went close again the week after so he's hitting the ball well and that is good to see. Not long ago, Donald was a contender for these majors with top 5 finishes to his name in all the other 3 majors. Injury and loss of form has hampered him since then but that's not to say he can't contend them again now he's playing well. Donald's got 4 top 10's to his name in America this year with a best of 2nd at the Nissan Open so he's playing well on both sides of the pond. He hits the ball straight and he's a solid enough putter. With his game in good shape then I'll take the 33/1 on offer on Luke this weekend. 1pt ew D.Johnson to win US Open 40/1 Stan James (6 places) Dustin Johnson must love walking through the gates of Pebble Beach. He's won the last two tournaments here and although the golf course will be a lot tougher this weekend it will obviously breed confidence playing at a place he's enjoyed such success at in the past. Johnson's a long hitter and although he can be wayward I think he can put himself in the mix. As well as winning the AT&T he's also had top 10's at the Nissan and the Byron Nelson so Johnson is enjoying a good year. He was T10 at the USPGA last year so he can deal with the majors and being very much a good horse for this course I'll take the American to go well this weekend. 1pt ew T.Clark to win US Open 66/1 William Hill (5 places) I really like Tim Clark as a player. He's one of the straightest hitters of a golf ball that there is. He can lack in distance but that didn't deter him from winning the Players Championship earlier in the year and his confidence must be sky high. Even though he uses the long putter, he's still very good on the greens. Clark's had 4 top 10's on the PGA Tour this year so he's playing some decent stuff. He's been T3rd in this tournament in the past and has a 2nd and 3rd finish in the other 2 US majors so he goes well in the majors. I don't think he'll be too far away when the winning putt is holed on Sunday. 1pt ew M.Weir to win US Open 110/1 William Hill (5 places) 2pts M.Weir Top 20 Finish 9/2 Totesport Mike Weir has an excellent record in the US Open. Only once since 2002 has he finished outside the top 20 in this tournament and he was also T16 when the tournament was last here. His record around this course is also very good. He's got 5 top 5 finishes here since 2003 in the AT&T, a record which won't be bettered by too many others. We can't use that form as gospel but as I said before, I'd rather have that than not have it. Mike Weir's a major winner in the past so we know if he is in contention on Sunday he'll get the job done. He hits it straight and is as good a putter as there is on a consistent basis and this price is just ridiculously big really. His form hasn't been brilliant in the recent weeks leading up to this tournament but he goes well in US Open's so I think he could well be in the mix on Sunday but at the very worst keep himself in the top 20 once again.

Kev, just a note on Mike Weir - I did look carefully at him for all your reasons above, however, his form this year is atrocious and looking at his blog he recently wrote... "Finally, I know a lot of people have been talking about the state of my game this year and I'll certainly be honest - it's not good. I really haven't played well all year." Just thought I'd give a word of warning, however, hope he gets in the mixer for you (but loses to Stricker and Furyk:ok) GL:hope

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Am not a regular Golf punter, but am quite excited about the US OPEN. With the FIFA World Cup going on, the intrest of punters seems to be less on the golf. After a little research I quite like the look of Dustin Johnson. Dont know if he can perform consistently and make it to the TOP 5. But definetely on the first round, he will have an advantage over other players, as he will feel confident on this course, since he has won a couple of tournaments here. So am having a bite at one market. 1st Round 3 Balls - 02:06 Singh Winner - Dustin Johnson @ 2.38 Betfair & 6/5 @ William Hill (5 points)

Fully behind you on this one hornet. I lumped on Weir two weeks ago in what I thought was a very geneous start in the handicap market. To say he was shi would be the understatement of the year. Weir was out of the tournament before the end of the first 9 holes on day one. Unless his game improves beyond all recognition,he will be headin for an early pint, taxi and takeaway at the 19th on day two. I would suggest a small wager on him missing the cut, this is after all the US Open, not a place to be looking for a comeback. GL

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Vijay Singh EW, available @100/1 plus. The big dour Fijian has been showing a few signs of a return to form, and his record at Pebble Beach is superb, an incredible 70.37 average over 49 rounds is something to be armed with at this venue. Course form is given and making the cut in the US Open on the last six visits, including sixth twice, the south sea perfectionist has to be overpriced. GL

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Another major, great....shame about the 8 hour time difference which means telly coverage goes on till 3am!:cheers:cheers Okay, a couple of bets on winning the Tourney Luke Donald e/w @ 33/1 with Ladbrokes (pays top 5) As has already been stated above, Donald goes into this major with great form albeit from the European Tour....his confidence has to be high and we should get a run for our money. A couple of interesting putting stats from the PGA Tour from this year put Donald at the top both in holing out from 5 feet or less (98.78%) and avoiding 3 putting.....the Pebble Beach greens are likely to be glasslike so a confident putter is a boost! Robert Karlsson e/w @ 80/1 with Ladbrokes (pays top 5) I've plumped for Karlsson simply because he made it into the play off last weekend (which Westwood won) and his confidence should be high. Tiger Woods to miss the cut @ 9/2 with totesport All is not right with Tiger at the moment (apart from the obvious sex scandals) his coach has packed in and with a (suspect) neck injury resulting in a recent withdrawal when out of the running and this from someone that won the U.S Open 2 years ago when he was barely able to stand! If Tiger strays it about off the tee he's going to be punished. Finally 4 1st Round Leaders each way with Ladbrokes for an interest.....the only reason I've picked them is that the scoring will be tough so around 4 under might be leading at the end of the day and these guys are capable of shooting that score. (on a good day) Graeme McDowell @ 66/1 Rory Sabbatini @ 150/1 Brandt Snedeker @ 150/1 Jerry Kelly @ 200/1 Here's hoping for a great 4 days golf!:ok Good luck folks TQM

Yeah as I said mate his form isn't good at the minute but form's temporary class permenant and all that. He will come good again at some point and at the odds I'm happy to take a chance it's this week. If he was in form then with his record in the event he'd probably be no bigger than 55-60/1. Sometimes a return to somewhere you play well at can inspire a return to form so I'll take the punt. Ta for the heads up though :ok

Agree with this one Jackie, he says he's getting back to his best so that's an interesting one. I think he'll do OK here but instead of taking him here I've put on a cheeky ante-post bet on him to win the Open @ St Andrews, was on offer this morning at SkyBet @ 100s. Same price as for this tournament but I feel he actually suits St Andrews way way better where big hitting is rewarded. His record there is superb considering he's not the greatest links player - 4 times he has played the Open at St Andrews and he has 4 top 12s. If he is getting back to his best, hopefully in a months time he'll have played himself in to form (which means he'll get back in to the top 50 and in to the tournament!) and with that course form, the 100s is way too generous for a 3 time major winner and 34 time pga tour winner. Either way, if he plays rubbish and doesnt get in to the tournament I'll get a NR and my stake back, and if he plays himself in to form I can see him going off at no bigger than 50s. GL:hope

Hello Hornet, nice bit of research on big VJ. I'm going in here again. I can't believe how some bookies react whats actually happening in the field. VJ had a very good round yesterday, considering he was out in the afternoon on the concrete greens. +3 is a very good position to be in after the 1st round and the tall fellow will have a early tee today, with the greens more receptable, he could fire a challanging score. Tiger (can I have your sisters phone number) Woods (+3) is 7/1 fav and wait for it the big man is 150/1!!! Get on! V J Sing 150/1 bet365 How many points you can afford EW to win US Open.

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Yesterday, Phil mickelson had a amazing day. He looks solid going into the weekend and i cant help thinking that the 3.55 available currently on Betfair is looking very juicy. I dont know if its a good value in terms of GOLf, where odds of anything beloe 7 or 8 dont make sense. But am planning to have a big bite at these odds coz i see another solid day today as he is a big day player and most real threats are way behind. Only Grame McDonald needs to have a bad day for Phil to go down to something like 2.5 and the rest will depend on his own performance, which, if it anywhere close to yesterday. he might be under evens going into sunday. Any thoughts from other golf followers will be appreciated. Am i missing anything ? Planning only, not placed any bets yet. Phil Mickelson to winUS OPEN @ 3.55 Betfair

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 I can't wait for tonight. I reckon it'll be a cracking night's golf, and a very late one :lol. I'm going with 2 tonight. 3pts I.Poulter to beat KJ Choi 11/10 William Hill Match tees off at 23.00 BST. Ian Poulter has played lovely golf in this US Open so far and but for some rotten luck in his 2nd round he could be leading the tournament. He had some ridiculous bad fortune early on last night. He hit the flag at his 2nd, the 11th and the ball ended up off the green when it would've been within 10ft had it avoided the flagstick. He made bogey there then on 14 he played 3 good shots to the green, got a bad bounce off his 3rd shot which ended up buried in the rough and he ended up making a 8. So he left his 5th hole +5 for his round and still only shot a two over 73. He's putting nicely and was unlucky with a couple of putts as the greens got tacky. He's hitting it really well and I think he'll put himself in contention tonight. He's playing a tricky customer in KJ Choi. He's never far away in major championships and has a 70 and a 73 to his name this week too. For my money though, KJ isn't quite as good on the greens as Poults is. This has every right to be a close match between two top players but Poults is playing some really good stuff this week and I'll take him to win this match. 3pts P.Casey (+2 shots) to beat B. de Jonge 23/20 William Hill Match tees off at 23.20 BST. Paul Casey is another who could be leading the tournament but for a bit of bad fortune at the 14th yesterday. That hole was brutal yesterday and Paul Casey ended up with an unfortunate 8 there. Despite that he still went round in 73 which was no mean effort and included a dropped shot at the last. Brendan de Jonge has the same score as Casey through 36 holes but his score included an eagle on 14 on day 1 where he holed his 3rd shot from 100 yards. He's also chipped in and holed a couple of big putts so to me the Zimbabwean is clinging on a bit. We saw on day one how he struggled on these greens at the end of the day and I think he might struggle on them today too. Casey's used to them and he's used to playing this late in a major at the weekend too. I don't think Casey is playing his best golf but he's solid, he's putting well and I think he can win this match quite comfortably. If he wins it by 2 we get a refund but I think the Zimbabwean could really struggle tonight so I'll take the chance Casey brings the match home by at least 3 shots or more.

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 OK, so it seems some big hitters are right up there which seems to work against conventional wisdom (and sadly most of my bets!) but I cant trust Johnson at evens. First time challenging at a major, and as shown by many, at the US Open you can rack up trebles in a heartbeat. He has won Pebble twice but the first time it was called off after three rounds and this year his 4th round was a shaky 74 so he wont have glorious finishing memories here. The guy I like for a trading proposition is Ryo Ishikawa @ 200+ sitting at +3. Just recently all the hype was that he hit 58 in the final round of a Japanese Tour Tournament so clearly he can hit low in the final round. This guy will live up to the hype and for him to get to evens and lay back at 30s is hardly inconceivable as I cant see Johnson holding firm at the beginning...just an interesting long shot for the final round! Re: Golf: US Open 2010 T.Woods To Win US Open @ 4/1 Betfar There probably isn't a great deal of value in this bet being 5 behind behind Dustin Johnson but if the Tiger continues his charge early doors then the roar will start to go up and they'll be great pressure on the leader and Mcdowell. He has not been in the greatest of form but his put himself in with a chance and I have a feeling Tiger maybe back tonight.

Agree with that, if he can carry on the way he played his last 9 yesterday he should be well there come the end.

Re: Golf: US Open 2010 Dustin Johnson having an absolute nightmare on only the second hole as he drops three shots! :eek This could be the third week in the row where a guy holds a three shot lead at the end of the third round but doesn't win in the US! :unsure
