After 5 months without any darts on TV, its back this weekend with the UK Open. A difficult event to predict, with the very short leg format and the draw after every round when the big boys come in. The 1st 2 rounds have already been drawn, and i'll get to though later. The favourite is obviously Phil Taylor. However, whether he should be for this tournament is up for debate. He won the World Championship in January by the skin of his teeth. Since then he has played in exactly no ranking tournaments, and has been busy doing other things instead of the day job. His practising will be next to non-existant (despite what he might tell everyone) and he certainly shouldn't be as low at 4/5 for this one. The form player at the moment is Colin Lloyd. In the 4 tournaments in the month building up to this, he won the first 3 in Holland, Antwerp and Montreal, before being narrowly beaten in the Semi Final by John Part in Saskatoon. At 10/1, he looks a good bet to make it 4 out of 5 in Bolton. John Part also seems to be coming back into form. He seems to finally be getting to grips with the new darts he has, winning in Saskatoon, and having a Semi Final and Quarter Final in 2 of the other recent tournaments. At 8/1 he is very tempting. Looking down the list for some value, Roland Scholten could do some damage at 33/1, Bob Anderson is a steal at 100/1 if he can repeat his performance from the world championships, while Erik Clarys at 100/1 and Dennis Priestley at 150/1 are far too high. However the real danger pick has to be Wesley Newton. While most of you will say 'WHO?', the darts world knows that he's in form and dangerous. Runner Up to Part at Saskatoon, he also has 2 Quarter Final appearences in the last month. And at 250/1, he will certainly have some of my money on him. On to the individual matches, there are quite a few men who aren't known too well, which makes it very hard to make any 1st round calls. The match of the round is undoubtedly John Lowe vs Keith Deller. Most bookies can't seperate them, and while normally I would be backing Lowe, over the best of 9 legs its anyones match. My 2 bets for the 1st round are unknown Derek Hunt to beat badly out of form Rod Harrington at 6/4, and Eddie Lovely to beat Laurel Qualifier Andrew Hamilton at 8/13. It's hard to look to the 2nd Round without knowing odds or exactly who will get through from the 1st round, but an early tip is Eddie Lovely (providing he gets past Andrew Hamilton) to beat Alan Warriner. Warriner is out of form, while Eddie has beaten Warriner in both their previous meetings. Hopefully the odds will be very nice, but anything about evens will be satisfactory. Cheers Gary
