The first one day competition of the domestic season begins in the morning. It's the 50 over Friends Provident Trophy. There's only been one minor change in the format from last season. Whereas the 4 groups were regionalised last season they are now randomly drawn and are as follows. Group A Nottinghamshire Hampshire Worcestershire Leicestershire Ireland Group B Kent Middlesex Somerset Warwickshire Scotland Group C Durham Gloucestershire Yorkshire Sussex Surrey Group D Essex Derbyshire Northants Lancashire Glamorgan All matches go by the international 50 over rules with batting and bowling powerplays. The referral system has been booted into touch.

Re: Cricket: Friends Provident Trophy 2009 3 outrights for me. Ladbrokes go 1st 4 at 1/5th odds. Not a fan of 1/5 odds in a realistic 18 runner field. 1pt ew Yorkshire to win Friends Provident Trophy 14/1 Coral (1/3 1,2) Yorkshire were going really well in this competition before they walked into a Graham Napier onslaught in the semi finals. They went to fortress Bristol and won in the quarter finals and had every chance in that semi final until Napier took it away from them. They then went well in the Pro40 and eventually managed to get promotion to Division 1. So they are far from a poor one day side. They have some real quality batsmen in their ranks. Jacques Rudolph and Anthony McGrath will be the mainstays but whenever Michael Vaughan is available it will be a real boost. Rana Naved plays the pinch hitting role well while the likes of Gale, Lyth and Brophy all add solid contributions. With this tournament in the main beginning at 10.45am a decent seam attack is a must and there can't be many better around than Hoggard, Kruis, Rana Naved and Patterson. For turning wickets they have Adil Rashid and the impressive David Wainwright so all angles really are covered. Their group is without a doubt the group of death but 2 qualify which helps and should they go through it'll take a decent side to stop them so at 14's I'll go with the White Rose outright. 1pt Warwickshire to win Group B 9/2 Boylesports Warwickshire are a tidy and efficient one day outfit with lots of good one day batsmen who can dig in or score quickly and a handy seam attack too. Spin is covered well, particularly when Jeetan Patel arrives so the balance of the side is fine. They bat a long way down which is essential these days and they'll be tough to beat. Kent are rightly favourites for this group but it's early in the season and they have a couple of injuries/IPL call up's and the rest are all pretty even and have their weaknesses. This is a wide open group and the Bears at 9/2 offer some good value. 1pt Gloucestershire to win Group C 10/1 Boylesports Gloucestershire have been reunited with the coach who made them the most successful one day side in the country around the turn of the century. John Bracewell was also successful in limited overs cricket with New Zealand as well and I'm sure he'll set Gloucester up to be tough to beat. They have all the tools at their disposal. A good batting lineup in which Spearman, Gidman and Marshall can take games away from their opponents and a decent if a little expensive seam attack in Franklin, Lewis and Kirby. They might be a bit short in the spin department with Dawson injured but Taylor can bowl spin. Bracewell knows how to win one day matches and that can be critical. This looks a tough group but Gloucestershire are still a good one day side and 10/1 is a daft price really and one I'm happy to have a small bet on.
