I'm thinking as low as 130 odd may be enough to get in the top 9 (wild guesstimate) Yes, especially since those who do play in later games are more likely to be those who've done reasonably well already, and (my good self excluded) therefore likely to be better players, there should be less dead money, so top 20 from 90 players should be harder than top 30 from 130 was. Don't play hands with a "dangler" (a card that doesn't fit with any of the other cards). AA is good. Hands like QJ109 or KKQJ are good. Lots of nut straight possibilities. Non-nut flushes are rubbish. So suited aces are worth a lot more than other suited cards. Think so, yes, and an intial raise is unlikely to thin the field much. Where I read this, it made a distinction with re-raising, where the amount you bet will be enough to get people to throw their hands away. If you have the nuts (btw WHAT is the nuts pre flop? AAKK double suited?) pre flop, surely it's in your interests to play for a bigger pot (or is that negatted by giving too much info away on your hand?)
