It's just another choice between Nadal and Federer isn't it? Nadal has the tougher half so it may be worth a go on Federer at a pretty decent price. Dare I go back to the awful awful outrights?:unsure :unsure Good luck everyone this week:ok

ReasoningSimple. Nadal & Federer are a class above anything else on clay and this tournament seems to concern these two. Nadal has won 4 of last 5 matches against the Swiss and I can't see any of the players beating him. He should win the Rome Masters. He just looks of superior dominance on this surface.

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May It's hard to see past Nadal but for someone who gambles purely for enjoyment there's no real value in that price considering he probably wouldn't be a whole lot shorter than even money on the eve of a final against Federer. A first round match against his "mentor" Moya, who showed some decent form in Estoril this week, is probably the last draw he would've wanted as well. Glancing at the draw, I'd expect Nalbandian to come out of his quarter and he'd fancy his chances in a semi against Federer so maybe he'd be worth an e/w punt at 20s. I don't think he dropped a single set in Estoril so fatigue shouldn't be a factor (despite the weight jibes) and his confidence will obviously be high.

ReasoningI think Seppi is a decent play here, as Youzhny has been woeful in recent weeks. In his two clay court tournaments he's lost in the first round to Coria and Melzer and both performances have been really bad. He generally has a pretty average record on clay and is much more suited to faster surfaces - both in the game and his head as he has very limited patience. In 3 attempts in the main draw here he's yet to win a match. Seppi has done alright in recent week, reaching the quarters of Valencia before losing to on fire Simon in two tiebreaks, 2nd round of Monte Carlo losing to Nalbandian and first round two weeks ago against Phau but I think we can excuse that on looking towards his home event. He's got a bad record here, but it's not so bad; in 2004 losing a very tight match against Hewitt then last year beating Pim Pim easily before losing in 3 sets to Horna. In general I think he's a superior clay courter and in a decent situation here.

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May

I'm surprised Blake is favourite against Serra. Worth opposing I reckon. Same goes for Henman against di Mauro. Thoughts?
Well there's both 2.00 so bookies think Blake-Serra is 50/50. I don't!! Blake has a good record on American clay but is really bad on European clay. I know Serras been poor lately but he should be favourite. Proper write up on that coming later tonight. The Henman one is tough to call. If you remember a few weeks ago I fancied him against Gaudio but he was awful. I'll probably leave it alone.

SelectionSERRA v Blake
Strength10/10
Date08/05/2006
Bookmaker/Price>William Hill @ 2.00 (Back)
ReasoningThis looks a decent enough price, and I have to go with the solid clay courter. Blake had a couple of great events on the US hard courts, but has also had a poor run this year, and is coming off two losses on grass in the DC and a loss on American clay to Dupuis. My stats say he's pretty good on clay, going 10-3 in the ast 3 months and 56-32 since 2000. However, all of his good results come on the American clay, he is really poor on European clay. Last his only outing was in the French Open, where he actually managed to qualify and win a round which is really good for him! However, looking a bit further back, in 2004 he went 0-2, 2003 went 2-5 (including a win against Dent!) and 2002 4-4. In fact, his only decent result was here in 2002 reaching the quarters but since then hasn't won a match so I'm willing to overlook that. Serra has been a nightmare this year, after winning a tournament in January he has disapponted consistantly and that is where the risk lies here. However, he is a proper clay courter and plays a lot on clay, going 30-16 on clay in the past 12 months. But in the past couple of weeks he's taken Soderling and Ljubicic very close, and whilst you can compare Blake to them they are both superior clay players. This is a good chance for Serra to get a pretty big win.

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May u fancied henman against gaudio on clay??? i know u r patriotic but come on... anyway I just put on this brilliant treble bet with Stan James: Volandri bt Murray @ 8/13: this british chump is overated, volandri is good on clay courts, did well in rome last year. odds is unbelievably high. Robredo bt Rusedski @ 1/8: odds inflated only cos he's british, 1/33 would be fairer. Robredo great on clay, rusedski might have a chance on grass but no way on clay. Nadal bt Moya @ 1/10: well the greatest clay courter of all time. nuff said This bet exactly works out to be odds of 2.00, double your money

Yes I did. He had a 3-0 H2H and had destoyed Gaudio twice on clay. Gaudio was in poor form and doesn't like Henmans slices. It didn't go well though did it?:lol :lol :lol :unsure :unsure

Bit risky that mate, they're like family and Moya is in decent form at the minute. Moya's probably the second most likely to beat him on clay:unsure.

SelectionSTARACE v Tursunov
Strength10/10
Date08/05/2006
Bookmaker/PriceStan James @ 1.44 (Back)
ReasoningWe saw last week how pathetic Tursunov is on clay - beating a child then losing out to Gil who is ranked 246. He's just in really poor form and cannot see him winning this. Starace is in pretty decent form, it has taken Verdasco, Soderling and Robredo to knock him out of his last 3 tournaments and they're all much better on clay than Tursunov. Being at home we know he'll be motivated, even though he has a pretty poor record here, he did beat Moya here last year before losing to Martin in 3 tight sets. Sorry nothing else to say about this one, except that it should be straightforward.
I'll also be playing MARTIN agaisnt Sanguinetti, but will wait till the morning as I'm sure I'll get better than the 1.53 from WillHill;)

Absolutely. Who, other than Federer, is more likely to beat Nadal at the moment? You could argue Nalbandian possibly but I wouldn't have it:tongue2. I don't think you could make a case for anyone else, unless you mutilate Safin and Coria to create a clay court god:lol :lol. It still doesn't mean I think Moya has any chance of winning the tournament;).

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May STARACE v Tursunov @ 4/9 What Mr. I said basically. Also Starace seems to have an excellent record in Italy. FERRERO v Mathieu @ 4/9 Ferrero is a bit unreliable these days but has been in decent form recently. With the exception of Almagro, he's been beating lower ranked opponents very convincingly in the last 3 tournaments. GAUDIO v Malisse @ 2/9 One of the best clay courters around. Showed some great form at Monte Carlo where he pushed Nadal all the way. BERDYCH v Srichaphan @ 1/4 The Thai is quite hopeless on clay. Berdych isn't. Prices taken from bluesq. 10 pt accumulator, pays 3.19. I've had 6pts on Serra as well. Can't add anything to Mr. I's excellent write-up.

If Nadal is to lose, it will have nothing to do with Federer. can't wait till nadal plays federer again, its like free money. He totally owns him, Federer can't even beat him on hardcourt, and on clay its a forgone conclusion.

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May Hi guys, We continue with the following picks: WTA TOUR, BERLIN, BYCHKOVA TO D SMASHNOVA @ 3.61 on pinnacle VESNINA TO D PESCHKE @ 1.65 on pinnacle SAFINA TO D SANCHEZ-LORENZO @ 1.25 on pinnacle DULKO TO D ZVONAREVA @ 2.26 on betfair KRAJICEK BAMMER @ 1.39 on betfair Bychkova is an up-and-coming Russian who will play against Smashnova who is close to her retirement and is losing more matches than winning even on clay. Worth a bet @ 3.61. Vesnina is just like Bychkova solid baseline player who has a potential to be a top 20 player soon. Peschke has won just 1(!) match in 2006. You never know what to expect from Zvonareva. Regardless of her mood for today, Dulko is simply a more consistent player than Zvonareva on clay. Safina and Krajicek are two players that very rarely lose to someone ranked much below them, and they both are in a good form this season, something that can't be said about their opponents. www.WinningTipster.com

SelectionALMAGRO v Massu
Strength10/10
Date08/05/2006
Bookmaker/PriceSportingodds @ 1.53 (Back)
ReasoningAlmagro still looks to be in truly awesome form and this looks like a decent price to ride that wave with. He's now 24-4 since he started playing well a couple of months ago, and he doesn't look like stopping. He came through his two qualifying matches here without any problems and should be set to win a few rounds in the main draw. In his only appearance here last year he came through qualifying then beat Andreev and Safin before losing in 3 sets to Stepanek. Massu showed some decent form reaching the final of Casablanca a couple of weeks ago but then falling apart against Bracciali isn't too good. He also fell apart last week against Gimelstob so I don't think he's coming in here with much confidence. The only thing is Massus favour here is that he did beat Almagro in Brazil earlier this year, in a tournament that Massu went on to win; however, Almagro has won a lot of matches since then and is clearly playing a lot better and with a lot more confidence, so I don't think that will be much of a factor.

Reasoning1:This will be close match, however Acasuso already 3-1 up in head to heads, the last two on clay. 2:Ferrer is not to be trusted, if he turns up wanting to win...he will. However in the last two tournaments he has been hit and miss and riding on his current atp ranking. 3:Ferrer 19 v 34 ATP Rankings is too close to call on current form. So in my opinion, this dog has a good chance of having his day with this match up. Nuff said.

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May I have all kinds of trouble confirming this, but throwing his name and injury in google keeps throwing me to the retirement of Simon in the SF @ Cassa. Bracciali was injured between Cassa and Munich? What type of injury was it? I knew he pulled out, and have read a couple of quips saying he was injured, but can't find out what or how. Would be good to know. Strong leans on Bracciali if it wasn't too serious

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May Bracciali was a shoulder injury. Not sure how serious, but looks like it could just be tiredness after winning a tournament. Simon retired with "leg pain" - another site called it "acute fatigue" so not too serious but again can't be sure if he's recovered.

Re: ATP TMS Rome 8th-14th May Hmm, I wonder which shoulder. From all I can tell, he really relies on his serve. Bracciali hasn't been that bad, but if Simon calls whatever he had acute after going down 6-0 and being 3-0 before the ret. he's really in trouble. Side note, if anyone is catching any of these matches live (read: not livescore) can you throw a quick quip on how they performed? Looking ahead this week, the round of 16 could really come down to some of that information. Cheers! Bracciali's success has usually resulted from quallies all the way in. No success in Rome at all in the past. May be worth backing Kiefer on that one. Home crowd support worries me though. Wish he didn't get injured, I'd take him as a dog in a heartbeat!

Stuck at uni today and tomorrow, might catch some of the later ones. Should be able to see a bit more on Wednesday:ok

SelectionMARTIN v Sanguinetti
Strength10/10
Date08/05/2006
Bookmaker/Price>William Hill @ 1.53 (Back)
ReasoningI think there's a lot of little reason for liking this bet, adding up to a very good situation for Martin. Martin has dropped down the ranking a bit this year, and his form on the European clay looks a bit patchy, however, his losses have come to Verdasco (defending champion in that event), Federer and Ferrero so I don't think there's any cause for concern. He also did alright on the South American clay reaching a final in Brazil and having a couple of average tournaments. Generally, he's a solid, decent clay courter and I think he'll get the job done today. Also, he did well in this event last year, coming through qualifying and reaching the quarter finals before losing a very tight match to Ferrer (I think I remember him being 5-2 up in the 3rd set before losing 7-5). Sanguinetti also did OK here last year, reaching the third round before losing to Coria. He beat Mirnyi and Santoro, which isn't too impressive, and I remember the Mirnyi match, he was a set down, got back to a set each, was 0-3 in the final set, got to a tiebreak and was 0-3 two minibreaks down before coming back to win. Yes, I was on Minryi! But generally that makes my point, he's not a good clay courter at all and has done badly here (at home) in the past. Before last year he'd lost 5 first round matches here. His record of 8-8 in the past 12 months and 36-55 isn't good on clay especially when a lot of his decent results have been in challengers (compare to Martin (17-14 past 12 months and 139-97 since 2000). This year Sanguinetti has been poor and has only 1 win on clay in 2 events. H2H is 2-0 to Sanguinetti, last year on hard courts and in 2000 on clay - however, that was a long time ago, when Sanguinettis movement was a lot better and it was Martins first match after trying to play at Wimbledon! (He made 2 quarter finals in the 2 weeks afterwards). I have to go with the clay courter in this one.
I also forgot to add that Martin came through qualifying very easily.
