Review of Kempton's new all weather track

Heres an article from the RP website after some semi public trials at Kemptons new all weather track.

Double delight Dwyer praises new surface by Howard Wright MARTIN DWYER rode the first double on the all-weather surface at Kempton on Wednesday, and promptly forecast that this would soon become Britain’s fairest non-turf circuit. The jockey had just taken took part in the first semi-public trials of the new facility at the course, where an invited audience had a sneak preview of the £18.8 million revamp to create Britain’s only right-handed all-weather track, which will come into use on Saturday, March 25. Having made all the running to win the first on Wembury Point for Brendan Powell and the second on Barathea Dream for Stan Moore, Dwyer admitted he could not comment on kickback from the Polytrack surface, but he added: “The big difference between this and the other all-weather tracks is that Kempton will be fairer. “Being right-handed makes no real difference, but this has a longer straight, and with a false rail on the final bend, horses won’t stack up behind each other and there won’t be a mad dash for home.†Jamie Spencer said the surface “rode really well†but made a plea to clerk of the course Brian Clifford not to make it quicker. Spencer said: “My horse in the first trial [runner-up Parnassian] wants soft ground, and he was able to let himself down. It’s perfect as it is, and the outside bend is so sweeping that horses come round perfectly balanced.†Steve Drowne welcomed the addition of a right-handed track to break the current anti-clockwise monopoly of the Arena Leisure trio, and added: “It’s a very straightforward track, and doesn’t ride sharp.†Polytrack pioneer Martin Collins was on hand to see his latest project used seriously for the first time, and said: “I’m delighted, and Kempton has done a very good job, so everything’s come together nicely.†Collins revealed that he would be spending much of his time in the US from the beginning of next month, supervising the preparation of Keeneland’s new track, which will use the same first-generation Polytrack mix as Kempton, for the first meeting in the autumn. Kempton managing director Julian Thick said that all that remained before the first fixture were a few finishing touches. He added: “All the operational issues have been dealt with, but today has been useful to blow away the cobwebs since we last raced in May 2005.†Kempton, which will offer free admission for the opening meeting to those who register in advance, will stage 54 fixtures this year, including 14 evenings, 12 ‘twilights’ with a mix of daylight and floodlit racing, and five over jumps, beginning in October. Restrictions on betting-shop opening hours mean that the floodlit fixtures will end with a 9pm race, but Thick is looking to promote a late-stay environment. A band will play after racing, and with the new train service providing a last service into London at 11.18pm, the new disco bar and sports bar will remain open until 11.30pm
